Tbe notes of Messrs. II. Brigham and
others, were given for 1650 bales of cotton
that belonged to tho State, and that were
ia Savannah when that city was captured
by Gen. Sherman. Tho facts uro substan
tially these: On tho approach of Gen. Slier*
inin towards Savannah, tho agent of the
Slate sold tho cotton to Mo-srs. Brigham
and others, on cert* in terms. Gov. Brown,
on receiving notice from the agent, refused
to ratify the sale, but this was not com
municated to the ngont until after the cap
ture. I have been reliably informed that

to pay the same in Georgia Treasury notes
