Now that the war is over, and slavery is Hlxdished, and freedom h every whom established in America, we cannot help asking, is i not about lime that certain English Abolition orators, who hove lora year or more been wandering all over tlm Northern and Eastern Stales lecturing in behalf of the Republican party—thought about returning to the old country ? There cortainly can ho no further work for them to do hero—while a good deal nearer home there is a pretty loud cry for‘ Liberty,” and “Justice,” coming up—not from black men, but from whiles—and if anything can be done to stop that cry. it not by de manding, at once, the “justice” and “equality” of the British Government, at least by inquiring into the grievances of the complainants, il seiMiit to us such gen tlemen h? the Key. Dr. Massey should not be, now, out in Ohio, campaigning there for the Loyal Leaguers, but in Ex eter Hall, London, or in College Green, Dublin, or in Kilkenny or Skibbereen. Lotus bavo “liberty” for Irishmen, as wcll as for the negro; or if Mr. Massey’s S overnment is not ready just vet, to grunt lat boon, let him at least h ntl his pen and tongue to bring it fair and sqwaro up to the mark. This Rev. I)r. Massey. 1). D., LL. 1)., etc., on the night before the Ohio election, made a speech in the Wesleyan (.’impel, Cincinnati, we sec, in the course of which he took it upon himself to say : “lie came here this time at iho instance of those who have directed their olforls to what may ho considered a somewhat sec tional movement, officers and members of the Freed men’* Aid Society in London; not at their expense, however, but that he might be able to curry back to thorn, fir ’their gratiilcalion, the tidings of progress The Wandering Jew. The legend of the Jew « vor wandering and never dying, oven from tho e: uci fix ion ot Jesus to the present day,is spread over many European countries.' Tim ac counts, however, as is all fable, do not agree. One version is this ; When Jesus was led to death, oppressed hy the weight of the crus?, ho wished to rest himself near the gate at tho house of Ahasuerus. This man, however, sullied forth ai d thrust him away. Jesus turned and said to him, “I shall rest, hut thou shall movo on till 1 return. And from that time ho has no rest, and is obliged to wander about incessantly. Another one is that given by Matthew of l*ai is,a monk of the thirteenth century : \\ hen Jesus w as led from tho tribunal of Pilate to death, the doorkeeper, named Can a (Ilions, pushed him from behind with bis foot, saying, “Walk on, Jesus, quickly, why dost thou tarry 7 Jesus looked at. him gravely, and said, “I walk on, but thou snail tarry until 1 come.” And this man, still alive, is wandering from place to place, in constant dread of tho wrath to come. A third legend adds that this wandering Jew lulls sick every hundred years, but recovers and renews his strength ; hpneo it is, that, after so many centuries, ho docs n*»L look miu.ii older than a septuagonari m. This much for the legends. Not one of | tho ancient authors allude to this wand :r- . or. The first one who reports such a thing j i* a monk of the thirteenth century, when, as is known, tho world was full of pious frauds, even to disgust. 11 >wevcr, the story has spread far and wide, so that it , has become a proverb, “He runs about \ like a wandering Jew.” SPECIAL NOTICES. The Use of Water as Fuel* An interesting discussion w.i« held lost night at a meeting of the Now V“i k Asso ciation for the Advancement of Science and Art, at tho Cooper Infinite, on the use of water as a fuel. I)r. William K. Hagan, of Troy, Now York, has recently been conducting a senes of experiments to determine whether steam could not be advantageously used as an aid to combus tion. The subject was brought before the lion. 1 uu Buuja-I. WHB Uiuu^iu unwru lilt! . . „ . I. 1>11( 1W ,,| Association at their la»t monthly mooting, had an^ . and a cominittuo appointed to tost tho p-ojlored “di.Liiont wl.on tho loan wi merits of Dr. Hagan's plan. Thu com mittee reported last night through their chairman, that although they hud boon testing tho matter by experiment for a week, that inasmuch as the apparatus Ufod by them was not adapted to determine with extreme accuracy tho exact differ ence made in the combustion of the coal by the introduction of the steam, they had not prepared a formal report of tho results obtained. The chairman of the committee, Dr. Leonard 1). t»ale, however, gave a very interesting informal account •>(' the experiments made and the results thus far obtained. The first object which the com mittee sought to obtain being the value of the discovery for domestic purposes, Limy bad conducted their first MXperimonts with an apparatus much resemblingu common cooking stove—-in fact, differing from one only in having attached to it in front a thick piece of cast iron with a cavity in tho centre very much liko a common “water back” to a stovo. On tho top of tho apparatus were four kettle holes, in each of which a kettle of water was pla ced, while another vessel of water was placed in the oven behind. The amount of heat produced during tho vurious ex periments was determined by the weight of water evaporated from the vcssoL. The experiments were conducted for three days by burning coal in the apparatus in tho ordinary manner, tin* amount of coal placed ip the stove being carefully weigh ed each day, as also the amount of ashes or residuum left, and the amount of wafer evaporated. For ilia other lour days a small stream of water was admitted into tho central cavity of the hollow iron front above described,, which being converted by tho heat of the lire into sP-am, passes through h series of small openings into the cettro of the burning coal. As in the other experiment*, tho amount of coal consumed and of water evaporated was carefully doteiminod und noted. The net results of the seven days’ experiments showed that while one pound of coal burned in tho ordinary way in tho appa ratus would evaporate on an average B 82- 100 pounds of water, the same coul burned in connection with the steam would evap orate 5 4'J-100 pounds of water per pound of coal, tho proportion being as 60 to 76. In other wordy, that the Uio ot tho stream of steam, in connection with the coal, in creased tho available heat obtained lrom ■port* na’s news last week, is the same as repott ed by the Nova Scotian. There wip, how ever, an advance of •} 1. on Friday thelkii, over tho quotations of the previous day, bringing Now Orleans middling up to 2H i., and other grade? in proportion. UV. V. AY«.», 17//i.
