Tho Legislature, which met last Monday, has sorno difficult work before it, the wm-.-L of which is probably the revocation ol the State ordinances, which woro in a shock ing condition. The debt of the common wealth i* large, but, though many of them fa vo rod a second resort to the experiment of repudiation, it is thought that .Mississip pi lias had enough of this, and will not try it again, except so far ns regard* that portion of her indebtedness contract'd to assist the rebellion. Another knotty ques tion with which tho members will have to deal, is that relating to tho admission of negro testimony in courts. A majority of them are said to be in favor of it. “Tlio Herald’s Toronto correspondent nays tlio mombers of tho Frovisonal Gov ernment, and their supporters in Canada, are in a state of great excitement in regard to tho Fenian movement. The Fenian organisation hos been known to exist there for yoars, but has occasioned but lit tle concern until tho occurronon of recent events, owing to which it has transpired. England, Ireland, and tlio Canadian Gov ernment have, it is said, organized and distributed throughout the province n foreo of spies. Great activity is reported to prevail in military affairs; changes in the disposition of troops ure being made; garrisons are strengthened in regions where tho Irish predominate, to investi gate the loyalty of officers and soldiers; arms are being distribused for tho u.-e ol citizens who are known to oppose the Fe nians’ designs. Nkw York., Oct. 23.-—Tho Tribune says Hon. J. L. Allison has been elected by the Mississippi Legislature to the Uni ted States Sonato for the long term. The Times’ special says Gen. Grant bus recommended the mustoriug out of all •Major aud Brigadier Uonnruls in the vol unteer service, except those disabled in the servico. Generals Grant, Thomas and Hancock, and other leading Generals, aro in favor of increasing the regular army so as to num ber 7*>,000 mon. Secretary Stanton favors tho plan. A dispatch from J. A. Donnho, Presi dent of the »S,in Fradcisco Chamber of Commerce, to A. A. Low, Pre.-ident ol tho New Yolk Chamber id Commerce, says tho earthquake shock on the 8th in stunt, was very slight, doing no damage ol moment, and there has been no interrup tion of businoss.
