Thore is a youuK goulloman in Virginia
bearing u name so illustrious in d, if J
were to givo it,tho most ardent opp. *ntj
of the mytholoKtc F. V. Vs would .
a curtain historic interest in what 1 an.
going to relate. When l say that uc is
called Lieutenant W you cannot pos
sibly guess liis name. But lo the curious
incident with which 1 propose to ainiiso
those readers who take an interosl in the
veritable occurrences of the great struggle
just terminated.
On the 9th day of Juno, 1803, thore took
place nt Fleetwood Hill, near Brandy
Station, in Culpeper county, tho greatest
and most desperate) cavalry conflict ol tho
war. Nearly 25,COO horsemen fought
there ‘’all a summer’s day”—as when
Karl Percy met tho Douglas in tho glades
ot Chevy Chase—anti the combat was of
unexampled fury. General Stuart, com
manding all tho cavalry of General Lee’s
urmy, had hold a grand review somo days
before, in tho extensive fields below the
Court. House, and a mimic btvlUn bad
taken place, preceding thn roal one. The
horsu artillery, posted on n bill, lirod
blank cartridges as the cavalry chargod
tho guns ; tho columns swept by a great
pole, from which the white Confederate
flag waved proudly in tho wind ; General
Lee, with his gri/./.led beard and old gray
tiding capo, looked on, thn center ol all
y. :-; bauds played, tho artillery roared,
the charging squadrons shook thn ground,
and from the great crowd assembled to
witness tho imposing speciaelo shone the
variegated drosses and bright eyes ol
beautiful women, rejoicing in tho heyday
of the grand review.
But that roar of artillery in tho mimic
buttlo reached other ears than those for
which it was intended. There were some
friends ol t/urs upon ;ho opposite shore of
the Rappahannock who took even greater
interest in thn movements of Gen. Lee
than the fair daughtoi of Virginia. The
thunder of the artillery was heard by
them, and they nt once conceived a burn
ing curiosity to know what ail this firing
mount. So, one bright morning about
dawn, they came across tho rivur, about
seventeen ‘housand in number, to see
wb»»v ()id Uncle Robert was about.
" . «n followed tho hard fight of
j- t Hill.
zk. u..,. or ip lion of this long and desperate
struggle is no portion of the present suh-
- | ject. The Federal forces (ail cavalry) ad-
put- t vanned in front, on tho right flank, on tho
left il ink— every where. Tho battle wu3
thus fought, so to speak, “from the center
outwarus.” What tho eye saw, us Stuart
rapidly fell Lack from tho river and con
centrated iris cavalry for the defense of
Fleetwood Hill,between him and Brandy,
was a great and imposing spectucle of
(•quadrons charging in every poition of
the field—men falling, cut out of tho sad
dle with the saber; artillery roaring, car
bines cracking—k perfect hurly-burly of
conflict.
Homo di.y, perhaps, the present histo
rian may give a page to this hard battle,
and speak of its “moving accidents;” of
»ho manner in which tho cannoneers of
the horse artillery m«*t and repulsed
charge upon their guns with clubs and
sponge-staffs; how that gallant spirit, I*.

asked him what regiment he belonged to, !
as if they observed something unfamiliar
in his demeanor; but, his r**n ly reply, giv- j
