I From tho Macon Journal and Messenger.I
Ceorgla Conlercnce,
FOURTH DAY.
Macon, Nov. 18, 1805.
Tho Oonforonco was called to order by
tho Bishop, and roligioua Horvtcoa conduct
ed by Rev. W. J. Parks.
The Minuloa of yosterday were road and
conUrmed.
Tlio following mombors’ names waro
called, and character paBSod and elected to
Elder’s orders ; A. Jarrol, R. A. Seale.
Tlio natno of James Thurmond was call
od. Ho being a Deacon iu tho Methodist
Protestant Church, his orders woro rocog-
tiizod by tho Conference and .ho Bishop
directed to givo him tho nccosBary au
thority.
W. J. Parka, from the committoe ap
pointed lo investigate tho case of J. U.
Caldwell, mado a report, in which it was
elated that they could not ngroo or adjust
tho matter, and it was mado tho order for
Monday morning.
il. J. Adams presented tho following
preamble and resolutions, in reference to
sundry change's:
Devoutly grateful to tho Great Head of
the Church for tho uuparallod progress
which Methodism has made in this country
sinco its introduction, ono hundred years
ago ; rejoicing in tho outporings of God’s
Spirit upon it during the current year, and
having confidence in tho efficiency of
Methodism as it is, in tho Methodist Epis
copal Church. South, and being very un
willing to oiler any plausable pretext to
tho M. K. Church, North, to'come into
«mr midst, or to place in tho hands of that
Church a weapon with which it may suc
cessfully assail us. Thorofore, bo it
Resolvod, Tbut it is tho sense of this
Conference that no change phould be made
in tho intinoraul fraturo of our Gouoral
Suporintendoncy, and that whilst more
Bishops should bo olectcd by the members
of tho General Conference, yet that, so
largo a number as ono for each Conference
(great and small) is, iu tho judgmont of
this Conference, unnecessary, and that we
are opposed to making Diocosoi of such
Conference and Diocoaeaug of our General
Superintendents.
Resolvod, That any prolongation of tho
Pastoral term is of most doubtful policy,
tending to tho destruction of tho wholo
system of itinerancy, and that giving to
our Bishops the nowor to indefinitely ox-
tend it, will produce unploasant distinc
tions botwoon ministers of tho M. E.
Church, South, and must rosult inovitably
in a slated ministry with its consequences,
i. o., tlie closing of hundreds of churches,
and the silencing of hundreds of pulpits,
in a word, must destroy a most efficient
agency as a Scriptural itinerant ministry.
Resolved. That as thousands of our min
isters and hundreds of thousands of our
membership, living and doad, wero reoeiv
ed into our church, upon probation, ai
Hookers of religion, And whilst in that re
lation woro converted, that tho Conference
suffering entailed by the negro’s own in
dolence, have led to disaffection, first ap
parent in sccrot military organizations,
but now violently manifested. At the re
quest of tho English Consul, Spanish war
sioamers have left Cuba to aid in restoring
order. Thoso movements in the West In
dian archipelago are all probably in soma
souse synipathetic.-- Journalof Commerce.
Spiritualism vs, Jugglery*
Tbo Paris corresponeent of the Dublin
Daily Express says:
"Dr. Lynn, tho son of an English cler
gyman, following tho bont of a roving dis
position, at an early age left his country
and has returned after eight years’ ab«
sonco, skilled in every department of the
"occult art.” Whatever the Hindoo jug
glers or tho .Japanese wonder-worker*
could impart ho has acquired and hia
lithesome lingers can accomplish. More
important still, whatever the most highly
gifted ot tlio spiritualists and their fami
liars can perform shrouded in darkness,
ho can repoat, without confederate or me*
chanical contrivance, in open day.
‘‘Dr. Lynn, during a brief visit to Lon*
don, with a view to make preparations for
a winter’s campaign (ho is, I understand,
to visit Dublin before setting here), gave
three private seances, at two of which I
was present. Avoiding tho toy trick* of
professors of magic who coino from vari-
out points of the compass and astonish
children of every growth, bis programme
is stored with eastern novelties, and hi*
erformance is the perfection of slight of
and. The closest observor is baffled by
his astounding doxtority, and the ease and
grace with which tlio most difficult feat i*
accomplished are as admirable as the dex
terity is marvelous.
I will monlion but one or two item*.
A graphic writer upon Japan sometime
since mado the world acquainted with the
most graceful and boauliful. and at the
same time most wonderful, of all the feats
performed by the jugglarsof that couna
try. They were the top and butterfly
tricks. A top is set spinning in the air;
on its descent it is caught on the point of a
sword, where it whirls merrily ; then it IS
brought along the keen edge to thh han
dle; then it renews its flight to be again
caught; and ultimately it is sent, like a
miniature Blondin, across a silken thread
which is invisible to tho audiuuce; some*
times ascends the hill, but is always sure
of foot, and waltzes its way over the nar*
row path, from tho boxes ol a theatre to
tbo back of a stage, as readily as across a
drawing-room. Tbo butterflies are cut
out of many colored paper, and fly about
as if endowed with life. In obedience to
the wave of a fan, they fly high or fly
low ; now they flutter over a lady’s bo-
quel; now they light upon the spray of a
wreath, now gyraio moth-like, round gas-
jots. This feat alone is sufficient to take
the town by storm.
But what will be said of the greatest of
"spiritualist” tricks, viz; tho writing on
the arm ? Let mo briefly state my own
experience of il. I was requested by Dr.
Lynn to write tho nume of any person, of
any country, who has died since tho world
began. 1 did so in a remote part of tha f
room, before leaving which 1 tightly fold
ed the paper on which the name was writ*
ton until it resembled a doctor’s pill, and
placed it en the table, where it remained
in prosence of and close to all present, ex
cept Dr. Lynn. That he did not touch it,
and that ho had no moans of ascertaining
what tho name was beyond tho meagre
hint to be dnrived from a replyito nia
question of how many words and litters it
comprised, l can positively vouch. With
in two minutes the name was traced upon
his arm, and in letters oach of which, If I
may say so, whs an enlarged fac simile of
my own. Five other names were Written
by different persons, and ono selected at
random out of tho flve, and with preciiely
a similar result. On the previous evening
thirteon ladies were present, as well as a
number of professional men—lights of
law, litorary and medical science; aname
was written by? each lady, and thirteen
times, to the unspeakable amazement of
all present, the writing on .the arm corres
ponded wUh tho writing oqjtbeuarutaDled
