ital of $2,000,000, amounting to thirty-
eight per cent, in cash, and fifty per cent,
in paid up stock. On its capital, thus in
creased to fro.000,000, it has already de
clared, in 1805, cash dividends of twenty-
six per cent., and twenty-five per cent,
within the coming four months.

Mr. Barker is a year or so older than
Gen. L’u*s, who retired from public life
eight years ago, and now lives in Detroit,

fact, in regard to Mr. Barker's longevity,
that the last tliiily years have boon passed
in this city, the climate of which, in tnuny
parts of the world, is very erroneously ro-
gutdud as not favorable to long lile. The
recent example* of Mr. Barnett, who died
a lew days ago, at the ago of eighty nine ;
of Col. Christy, who, d os pi to a life as go
nial, gay and vivacious ol any of our
young men of thirty, and ot tho hardships
of several severe military campaigns, has
just terminated a life of seventy-five yoars;
of Mr. Alfred Honnon and Jacob Barker,
both alive and as active and earnest in

member ot' our bar, and who with Mr.
Glcndy Burke, ha« charge of tho finances
of the city; of Bernard Matign.v, who

mention, all octogenarians. Such exam
ples ought to vinvlicatb, beytmd all cavil

The Herald’s Washington special says:
The discipline nnd regulations of the
Old Capitol prison continue to be as strict
as before, and the food, correspondence
and reading matter brought to the prison
ers is scrutinized so closely as to entirely
shut off any improper communication
from the oatside. Among tho plans in
vogue for conveying money and messages
from external sources to the prisoners has
been that of secreting in packages of
smoking tobacco the object to bo trans
mitted. This was detected early. Un
derscoring worffi in books at long inter
vals, so when taken together they em
body sentences, is not unusual with tlio
prisoners when about to return books to
their friends. This latter invention occa
sions considerable labor to tho officers of
the prison, as it necessitates a careful scru
tiny of all books that outer or leave the
cells. The sanitary condition of tho Old
Capitol’s occupants is very good.
Tbo artesian well at Chicago is repre
sented to be the finest in the world :
In December, 1863, tho hole was com
menced with a diameter of five inches.
In January following, when at the depth
of sixty-five feet, the tools got fast, and the
weol was abandoned. Another was start
ed in a few weeks, and when at the depth
of seven hundred and cloven feet, an arch
of rock suddenly gave way, and the water
burst forth in great volume and force.
Tho hole had been drawn into four and a
half inches at the bottom, through which
orifice the water flows at the rate of 000,*
000 gallons per twenty-four hours, at a
uniform temperature of 58 degrees F., and
in the words of tho president of the com*
pany, "is clear as crystal, as pure as tho

ble matter, and from nn injurious sub
stances, and its composition is such that it
is better adapted for drinkiug purposes,
and for health, than any other water
known.”

mercial writing from Jackson, Miss., says
