Lokey and Mr. Cumming arrested live negroes in tbeir neighborhood, some six miles noith of this city, between the Hamilton road ,-id the river. 'The negroes were on a thieving “rampage," and were equipped for the purpose in a manner very similar to Sut. Lovingood’s dad “a*ti;iir hoar-. They had two wagons, with wheels of not mare than a foot or fiftoen inches dituno- t«r, each drawn by a negro pulling by a breast strap. The wagons mudo Imrdl.v toy noise in traveling. They Imd in the wigons, when arrested, throe slaughtered bogs, one 6ftck of wheat, one sack of poos, md one sack of moul. All the circutn- slantes showed that they’ wore on a raid ing or plundering expedition, and had eo far been quite successful. They wore all brought to this city and turned over to the military police at headquarter?. We learn that three of tbo freedmon lived in this city, and two in tbo country. It is evident that, to prevent systematic anJ wholesale robbery throughout tbo country hereafter, a very large nnd c:. tt- stantly activo police force must bo organ- ixtxi'and kept on duty. Tbo “peace es tablishment," to be effective, must be al most as extonsive and vigilant a? the whole militia forco on a “war footing." 7Vo* Brulye in Girard.—Wo are glad to learn that the county of liiisaell has made icontract for the rebuilding ol tbo bridge over the crook in (Jirard, nnd that the work will bo commenced at once, Tim bridge will be built on tlm site of the old one.
