A little, : ragged section ot earth, 120 feot high—its brown, dirt wall* broken by a stratum of yellowish marl—is all that remains of tho hill, rock ribbed and ancient a? tho sun. One workman stands at tho top, diroeting a tiny rill which comas pouring over the edge, cutting tho earth into perpendicular slices. The rest are at tho bottom. Wa ter is brought down to them through a cast iron pipe from a neighboring summit. At the top tho stream is two feet square ; at tho bottom it all passes through two pipes of three inch hose. Tho condensa tion and tho fall of more than 100 foot give it tremendous force. These three inch streams, directed against the upright bank 1(K) feet away, send vast clouds of earth aud boulders flying in all directions, bora into the compact gravel like luigo augers, and even penetrate tho narrowc-t crevices of tho rock, soon loosening and bringing it down in fragments twice a* large lB flour barrels. At tho bottom two labor-* or*, in lndiarubbor coats and loggings, stand in water up to the thighs clearing away the debris. The stream carries off tho dirt and stones with groat rapidity, but they toil with picks and crowbars to assist the heaviest rocks in the flume. This is a wooden trough three feot in j diumotor, with sharp descent, where nil the waters gather in a boiling rushing tor rent which washes away tho earth and boulder*, while the sinking gold is caught by blats on the bottom. Unco in tho flume a rock which fills it is borne along like a cork. With almost every pick the work men glance up uneasily at tho quivering earth wall, which sometime? tumbles un expectedly, causing fata!uccidonU. When it is about to full unobserved, the pipe- men. whose position is farther away, shout “look out!” Miid tboy spring buck, while great ma»es of rock come crashing down. They work in the water twelve hour* for $3, boarding themselves. The Lite Hon. Illuet Holt. Cuthhkkt, Oa., Nov. 23d, 18*35. Mr **/■*. Editort.'
