Dr. Merwin, of Now York, long cele brated.for the skillful manufacture of gome of the beit medicines in use, has a card in our paper this morning, llis remedies have been used in this country for years, ami thousands can tostify to theii efficacy in curing the diseases l’or which they aro severally prepared. Ennis & Co. aro now filling up their lyacious store with tin entirely new stock of hardware. None of us can forget this ttaunch old house, that so steadily stood by us during the long reign and high car nival of specalations and engrossments. X© exorbitant price was ever demanded by this firm during the four long years of war, when all the rest of us were stretch ing ourselves to too who could got the highest prices. Messrs. "Semper”—We have received a com munication from tho author of tho letter to tho Now York Evening coplod and commented upon by us about a week ago. Tho communication shall havo a placo in our columris to-morrow. Watch Round.-rAn honest freodinan brought to our office, yesterday morning, a fine gold watch, which ho had picked up near tho locality of tho highway robbery on Monday night. We sup pose it to be Mr. Weaver’s watch, but justice to the finder requires that it be particularly described by tho loser beforo givon up. Wo havo no doubt that the owner will liberally reward tho findor, who has acted in so praiseworthy u man ner. Tho watch is at this office. Audacious Highway Robbery,—On Mon day nigh!, about 9 o’clock, a Mr, Weaver was attacked by three white men, near Mrs. Clegliorn's residence, corner of Oglo* thorpe and St. Clair streets, and robbed of about ono thousand dollars in money, a tine double-ease gold watch, and some valuable papers, Tho robbers mado a violent assault on him, and, in spite of bis resistance, robbed him on tho street at an early hour of the night, at u point which wo would call tho very contro of the city ! If tho highway robber can sue cossfully prosoi.uto his work at such a place and such an hour, when and where is any citizen safe? Is it impossible to catch a few of the rascals perpetrating so many villainies, and make such an exam ple of them as will be a terror to the whole tribe ? A change ha? been made by D. P. Ellis, in his business, by adding the namo of his brother Roswell to tho firm. It is unne cessary in tl.ih community for us to say anything for D. V. & It. Ellis, and we will not say anything for D. J\, for he talks— and that loudly—for himself; but we will •ay a word for Roswell, for wo want all who do not know him personally to un derstand that he is a real Bolid acquisition to the house, lie has lived in this city for years—so long, indeed, that the “memory of the oldest citixun runneth not unto the contrary”—and ho has boon true in every position, in peace, no milder or more amiable man lives—and in war, his firm nww has made him infirm for life. W congratulate D. P. Ellis and his many patrons upon tho addition of such a man to the concern. Richmond Medical Journal.—A pres sure upon our columns excluded from our issue of yesterday (says a Richmond pa per;, the prospectus of the Richmond Medical Journal, which is to bo establish ed by those two eminent surgeons and practitioners of medicine, Dr. E. S. Gail- lard, of this city, and Dr. W. S. McChes- nny, of Staunion. The first (J|puary number) will be issued early in December. This Journal is inaugurated under au spices tho most favorable. Its founders and editors are peculiarly fitted for the conduct of euch a journal—and the ex tended Southern field is unoccupied by a competitor. Such a publication is a ne cessity to tho medical profession of the South. Than Dr. Gaillard thero is no more distinguished medical name in the South, nor indeed is his roputation con fined to this section. He is equally well known and appreciated at the North. His scientific attainments and professional skill and experience attracted the atten tion of the late Confederate authorities, and he was assigned to serveral eminent positions, which ho filled with signal abil ity. Ho is a writer of cultivation and power, and tho Journal will bo enriched with many original articles from his pen. It is proposed by tho editors to pay lib erally for contributions, which will ena ble them to command the best medical pens in tho country; and they have, be sides, tho promise of voluntary articles from many’ eminent sources. We com mend thj%ifcntcrprise to the medical pro fession in the South, in the full confidence that it will in all respects prove worthy of thoir patronage. Its editors are not only gentlomen of eminent professional qualifi cations, but of the highest moral worth and social standing. _ _ R A CARD I desire to return my gratoful aoknowledge- monts to my friends aud patrons who hare so liberally o*tended their influence aud patron age to me for the last ten years. I would an nounce to them and tho public that, as the •torm of war is over and commerce looks bright from East te West, I have established myself In the drug business, and shall devete my entire timo and enorgie? to the same. I have formed a copartnership with Dr. Austin M. Walker, an old resident of this city, a gentleman of sterling integrity and worth. I havo just returned from New York, where I selected in person and purchased for oesh. di rect from importers and manufacturers, the largest and most completo stock of European and American drugs, medicines and chemicals, also the finest stock of Egyptian, Persian and French fancy goods and perfumery ever before ffered in Columbus. Owing to tho many adulterations in drugs and chemicals at the pr<*eut time, we have added to establishment a chemical Laboratory for the purpose of manufacturing our preparations with improved apparatus and strictly in acoor- Junco with tho rules of pharmacy and chemi* try, alto, lor the purpose of detecting and re moving the impurities of overy article dis pensed fr*m our proscription department. All dienlH oompttsing a prescription should be m (a be pure, that they may have the effect ntended by the scientific physician. It is of vital importance to all that they procure pure aud reliable medicinos. Our ohomical and prescription departments will be undor tho control of Mr. William J. Lund, a skillful chemist and pharmaceutist. I would announce to the medical profession and tho trade that wc have fitted up commodi ous rooms on tho second floor for the wholesale and jobbing trade. We intend to keep auoh a large and complete stock of everything In our lino, and to offer such Inducements as will se cure patronage to .Southern industry and enter prise. I respectfully invite my old customers and tho public to call and examine our stock aud prices. If I do not make U to your inter est I cannot expect your patronage. With my compliments and best wishes for your happiness and prosperity, I am respectfully, Your obd't serv’t, J. S. PEMBERTON, of the late firm of Pemberton k Carter. He thus explains the science of the gutne: . „ . The game ii a great invention. It is easily understood. All you have to do is to—keep your eye on the ball. It’s till about the ball. They also u*o a bat. The bat is a club built on the model of the club Barnum killed Captain Cook with. Tbit is why tho or*aniaation is called a One fellow takes & club and stands on a lino, and another standi in front of him, and fires the ball back at him. The chap with the club hits back. The ball flies in the other direction. Tho first follow drops the club as though ho whs poured, and runs like a pickpocket witli an M. P. after him. Several fellows run after the ball, home body catchee it and fires it at tonoebody else, when tho chap who had the clut> stops running. , . . . Another follow then takes the club, ana the same man, who is called the “pitcher, pitches on him, fires the ball at him, and he hits back, knocks the ball, drops his chib, und cuts his stick for the first base. Half a dozen fellows out on picket duty scramble lur the ball. One reliablo B. B. is posted behind the club man, in case the club man misses the ball, to see that it don’t go by and hit the Umpire. . . .. When one side is out, the other side goes in, and when both sidei are out, U is called an “inning*.” . .
