Tao Ex piece says the lull carpet trade is about
over tor the eeaeou ; it has been quite prosper
ous lor all tlie manufacturers; the dock on
baud has been reduced to an unusually low
point, nnd tho prices very firm. There Hre u
large number of orders unfilled, and manufac
turers, generally, will be kept busy on then) un
til the close of the year.
The New England mills arc working full time,
and the production ot domestic cotton is large.
This iuduces buyers to be cureful in purchases,
Any pressure to sell would muke much lower
price-. Low and middling Prices of moderns,
both domestic and foieign, dull. Fancy casai-
mcre are selling at lair prices. French merinos
and delaines are bettor sustained than other
goods. Fair demand for silks, especially fancy,
and they are still offered freeiy.
The dry goods trade remains dull. The down
ward move in prices continues. The jobbers
are only buying to supply their immediate
wants, anil there is a general disposition to re
duce stocks, as the season draws to a close. The
standard brown sheetings declined to 32 oarly
iu the week, but afterwards rallied to 32}£.
Fine brown sheetings have decliuod from 2 to 5
cents per yard, with more doingat reduced quo
tation. Prints have fallen off one cent, and
are dull, buyers waiting lower prices. Bleach
ed sheeting arc firm in New York mills, but all
others are down from 2% t • 5 cents.

How Sugar is Made White.—-The
way in which sugar is made perfectly
white, it is said, was found out in a curi
ous way. A hon that had gone through a
clay inud puddle, went with her muddy
fuel into a .sugar house. She left her tracks
on a pile of sugar. It was observed by
some one, that wherever the tracks were
tho sugar was whitened. This led to some
experiments. The result was that wet clay
came to bo u*od iu refining sugar. It is
used in this way: The sugar is put into
earthern jars, shaped as you see tbe 6Ugar
loaves arc. The large ends aro upward.
Tho smaller ends have a hole in thorn.
The jar is filled with sugat, the clay put
over the top and kept wet. Tho moisture
goes down through the sugur, and drops
from tho hole in the small end of the jar.
This makes tho sugar perfectly white.
It is rumored in theatrical circlos that a
distinguished American tragedian, now
acting In this city, one of the last great
representatives of Shakspeare’s heroes,
will soon lead to the hymenial altar a
beautiful and accomplished daughter of
the South, already well known for her
genuine and original literary talent.
IN. V. Herald,
Tho Mississippi Index learns that one
hundred balus ot government cotton wero
ftolon from the depot at Crawtordville on
the night of the 20:1). The Index says,
“no duo has yet been obtained as to who
the thieves aro; although suspicion rests
rather heavily on some of the military
not a thousand miles oil'."
Tho ministerial organ, L’Union Nation-
ale, at Toronto, Canada, speaking of tho
contcmpluled Fenian invasion, doclaros
that government is organizing an army of
forty thousand men, to be stationed along
the entire frontier line of Que'ooO and
Toronto, and to garrison all frontier towns.
Depositors aro withdrawing their funds
Irorn the banks, and panic prevails.
Significant.—The ltaleigli Progress,
of tho lCih instunt, contains a lettor from
the State Department at Washington to
Governor Holden, enclosing tho amend
ment to tho Federal Constitution adopted
by the last Congress. The writer of the
letter, Acting Secretary F. W. Seward,
requests the Governor to cause tho decis
ion of tho Legislature of North Carolina
to bo taken on the subject.
XlKHUlLDINO OF THE TeMPL*.—The
Jews, both in this country and in Europe,
have for several years pust been making
great efforts to raise subscriptions for the
rebuilding of tho Temple at Jerusalem,
permission to thut effect having been givon
to them by tbe Turkish Government.
There is a sublimity of purpose about this
movement which must claim the respect
and sympathy of all Christendom.
Negro Brigandage.—The Savannah
Herald says that John G. HoHzcIaw, of
Gr*cno county, and two assistants with
him, on the way to Savannah to procure
tho corpse of Mr. Holtzclaw’s 6on, wore
assailed, grossly assaulted and robbed nt
Scroven’a Ferry by a party of negroes,
w ho w ero not easily dissuaded from shoot
ing him. The negroes told Holtzcluw
they did not intend to lot any white man
travel through that country.
An article in Blackwood in regard to
the Trent affair says: It in now no lon
ger ti secret that Lord Palmerston had
made up his own mind not to go with the
Fcdoral States. Tho Etnperoy of France,
equally us long-sighted agreed with him,
and had there not been with Palmerston
in the Cabinet, man to whom the thought
of war under any circumstances is dread
ful, a message would have been sent to
Washington which would have required
but u short and categorical answer, bo-
cause u fleet equipea for action would
have escorted it to the mouth of tho
Chesapeake. In the Cubinet however,
here sat at that time, not only Messrs.
Glade stone, Milner, Gibson and Villers,
but Sir George Cromwell Lewis, tho
most subtle ot political reasoners and
the most pacific of ministers.
The articlo savs that ut the time of
tbe Trent affair England had a long list
of outrages to be accounted for. It had
been cheated in the Ashburton, troaty.
The States claim as their own territory
wlmt they had iu their possession. The
clearest proof belonged to us; and as if
to cap these outrages, tho Island of San
Juan was admitted to be ours up to tho
moment of its occupation by our forces
These, with other lesser, bat not impor
tant wrongs festered tho Trent outrage,
which presented such uu opportunity as
could never be expected to occur again
for lighting them all, and by a process
which would have bonefitted the whole
world. Had wo struck then, as Lord
Palmerston was anxious wo should do,
the Southern States would have achieved
their independence and become to us
faithful allies, as well us our best custo
mers.
Properties of Charcoal.—Among
t lie many properties of charcoal may be
mentioned its power of destroying smell
! taste, nnd color; and, as a proof of its
possessing the first quality, if it be rub-
‘ bed over putrid meat, the smell will be
destroyed. If a piece of charcoal bo
thrown into putrid water, tho putrid taste
or flavor will bo destroyed, undtho wa
! ter be rendered completely free. Sailors
| are aware of this ; for when water is bad
at sea, they arc* iu tho habit of throwing
; pieces burnt buisouit into it to purify it.
Color is materially influenced by chur-
i coul, and in a number of instances, In a
• very irregular way. If you take a dirty
| black syrup nnd filter it through burnt
charcoal, the color will be removed. The
charcoal of nnimul matter appears to be
the hot f >; this pnrposo. You may learn
the influence of charcoal in destroying
colors, by filtering a bottle of port* wine
through it; iu a filtration it will lose a
great portion of its coloring, and become
tawny ; repeat the proof*** two or three
time*, and yon have destroyed it alto
