A1 »l United State! District Court. George W. Gayle, of Dallas, appeared before the U. 8. District Court yesterday, in accordance with the conditions of his recognisance, to answer an indictment, at the suit of the United States, for conspi racy, No grand jury, however, having been organised at this term of the Court, no indictment was found against him ; he tbereforo entered into a new recognisance' to appear at the future terms of the Court until his case is disposed oC Ex-Govcr. nor Watts, Ex-Governor Shorter, Chief Justice Walker, Judge E. W. Pettus, Judge Porter King, Judge John Cochran, Gen. James H. Clanton, Gen. John ?. Morgan, Hon. Alex. White, Hon. W. P. Chilton, Col. D. S. Troy, and Gen. J. T. Holtaclaw, appeared and were recognised as his sureties. The case of Mr. Gayle being thus indefinitely postponed, and the United States District Attorney having no other businoss to bring to the attention of the Court, his Honor, Judge Busteed, signified his readiness to further hear the argument of the remainder of the com mittee, appointed by the bar, against the constitutionality of the act of Congress requiring attorneys practicing before that Court to subscribe to a cerlain oath. The Hon. Alex. White, of Talladega, first ad dressed the Court in a clear, luoid and profound exposition of constitutional law, and was followed by the Hon. Wm. P. Chilton in equally as able, forcible and convincing an argument. The bar could have scarcely selected abler exponents than Ex-Governor Watts, and the Hons. Alex. White and W. P. Chilton; and if oratory and a familiarity with the juris prudence of tho country could have effec ted anything, then we think the opinion of Judge Busteed in this matter will be in accordance with tbeir wishes. The Dis trict Attorney, J. Q. Smith, Esq., will make a reply to-day.—Montg. Mail, lsf. John Adams’ Courtship.—The Bos ton Transcript says: A correspondent Bent us the following interesting reminis cence : John Adams sought the hand of the daughter of the Rev. Mr. Smith, of Wey mouth, and Mias Abigail was pleased to accept the proposal of Mr. Adams, much to the chagrin of the parson, the objection being that Adams was a man of humble origin and moderate ability, and could never aspire to anything more than the po sition of an humble vtllago lawyer. His visits to her home were frequent and pro longed, but no hospitalities were tendered by the Rev. Me. Smith, either to Adams or his nag; for while Abigail only bad watchful care over him, his Day bassedthe weary hours of night in feeding on the bitchiog post. N ow Abigail had a sister whose namo was betrothed to a wealthier, and, it was be lieved, more promising young man whose presence was welcomed most cordially by the Reverend’s family. The good parson had promised each of his daughters that on the occasion of her marriage ho would preach a sermon from a text of tho bride's own seleotion. Mary first married, and heutifully appropriate did the father think the text: “And Mary hath chosen that good parti" In due time Abigail marries and chooses for her text: "For John came neither eating nor drink, ing, and they say he hath a devil." Tra dition does not tell us, as wo remember, how the text pleased the father, the ser mon was preached. Mary, indeed, chose a good part; her life was a happy one. and her husband was a man of means and respectability. Abigail waa a woman of strong affection, a practicable wife, and possessed of great nobility of character, while the name of her husband and son will live as long as the love of liberty in pires the soul of man. A couple in Winsted, Connecticut, re cently got married, as they supposed, and went off on a bridal tour. Upon tbeir re turn, they were horrified by the discovery that the man who united them, was not legally qualified to do so, and that they were not, in fact, married at all, whatever thoy might have been theoretically. But magistrate was found who fixed up the matter so as to cover arrearages. “LE CRITIQUE EST &ISEE ET L’flRT EST DIFFICILE!’’ DRUG AND CHEMICAL HOUSE’ J. S. PEMBERTON. DR. A. M. WALKER. J. S.
