I Provisional Gov’t ok Georgia, >- Milledgovillo, Nov. 21,18(55. ) Whereas the late Convention did ordain, that the Provisional Governor should provido for tho formation of one or more Militia or Volunteer companies in each of the counties of the State, to act as a polico torce, to suppress violence, to preserve order and to aid the civil offieors in the enforcement of the laws, under such regula tions as might be cons ; stont with the laws of tho United States. Now thcroforo. I, James John son, Provisional Governor of the State, do here by authorize and request the people of this State to organize, according to law, in each of the ceunties of tho State, a volunteer company* for the purposo of aiding the civil authorities in the execution of law and tho suppression of violence. And it is heroby further doclarod, that such companies, when so formed and organized, shall be auxiliary and subordinate to tho civil offi cers ; that they shall arrest no person, and search tho house of no person, without a legal warrant regularly issued by some magistralo having aathority, and shall in no case inlliet any punishment except by tho judgment and direction of a duly qualified civil officer, hav ing jurisdiction of the offense. And whereas, it is desirable to have uniformi ty in command, and that there should bo no oonflict between tho military authorities of tho State and the United States, it is lurther de clared, that said companies, when formed with in their respective counties, shall bo under the control and subject to tho military command- ors of tho Unitod Stales, commanding the Dis trict ; and for a violation of those regulations, and for any other offense committed, shall bo tried and punished according to the rules pro scribed for tho '.government of the army of the United States. There wore three deaths at the hospital last week, and several new cases reported. There aro now about forty cases at the hospital and in the town. [Athens Banner, 24th. A Nut for Geologists.—A gentloman of Springfield, Muss., recently returned from California, brought with him apiece of tho auriferous quartz rock about tho size of a man’s fist. On taking it out for exhibition to a friend, it accidently foil upon tho floor and split open, when there was discovered neur tho contor of tho mass, firmly imbedded in the quartz, and slight* ly corroded, a cut-iron nail, of the size of a sixpenny nail. It was ontirely straight, and had a perfect head. By whom was that nail made? At what period was it S lanted in the yet unchrystall*zed quartz? low came it in California? If the head of that nail could speak, we should learn something more of American history than wo aro likely ever to know. The Holly Springs Reporter complains that some negro cavalry dashed into that place last week, pressed horses and sad dles, abused und robbed citizens, and played tho devil generally. They wore commanded by a Lieutenant Ambrook. It is high time this doughty warrior had learned that tho war is ovor. The samo paper says that many old cit* izens of the county aro retnrntng from Texas, Georgia and other States.
