From tho btoa<l and calm Potomac
To tho Rio Urando's wavea,
Havo the brave and noble fallen.
And the earth i* Btrown with craves.
In the valo and on the hUlaido,
Thro* the wood and by the stream,
lias the martiAl pageant faded,
Like the vision of a dream.
Where the rovoillo resounded.
And the stirring oall, "to armi,”
Nod the drowsy heads of clover
To the wind's mesmeric charms;
Where tho heels of trampling squadrons
Beat to dust the mountain pass,
Hang the dew-drop's fragile erystall
From tho slendor stems of grass.
Where the shock of meeting.armies
Roused the air in angry waves;
And with sod and hollow groaning!.
Echoed earth’s deep hidden oaves;
Where the cries of crushed and dying
Pierced the elemental strife,
Whoro lay Death in siok’ning horror
'Neath the maddoned rush of Life,—
Quiet now reigns sweet and pensive.
All is hushed in dreamless rest*
And the pitying arms of Nature
Hold our heroes on her breast.
Shield them well, oh tender mother.
While tho morn and evening's breath
Whispers us, the sad survivors.
Of their victory in death.
What tho’ no stately column
Their cherished names may raise.
To dim the eye and move the lip.
With gratitude and praise.
The blue sky, hung with bannered clouds,
Their solemn dome shall be.
All Heaven's choiring winds shall ehant
The anthem of the fiee.
The Spring, with vine-leafed arms, shall olasp
Their hillocked resting places,
And Summer roses droop above
With flushed and dewy faces;
Fair daisies, rayed and crowned, shall spring
Like stars from out their dust,
And look to kindred stars on high,
With oyes of patient trust.
And vainly shull tho witling's lips
Assail with envious dart,
Tho famo of our horoio dead,
Whoso stronghold is the heart;
The nation*• heart—not wholly crushed,
Tho’ oach throb ho in pain.
For Lifo and Hope must still survive.

The Florida Election.— 1 Thn fin von-
nub Herald loarns lrom a gentleman who
arrived in that city from Florida, that the
elections which occurred in that State
last week were attended with more thfcn
the usual excitement, incident to such oc
casions, and in some localities run so high
as to culminate in broaches of ibe public
peace.
At Lake City, particularly, the contest
became so heated that the friends of some
of the contestants for office were on tho
eve of a desperate collision, when, with a
view to its suppression, the United States
officer of the post ordered out the colored
troops and marched them to the ballot
box, with loaded muskets and fixed bayo
nets, which so much incensed the citizens
that nothing but tho speody withdrawal
of the negroes prevented u bloody con
flict.
Tho day afler tho election three white
men attempted to arrest a colored man
who had committed an offense against the
law, when the latter made such stout re
sistance that ho was shot by one of the
parties trying to arrest him.
This occurrence revived the excitement
of the previous day and led to menacing
threats. Gov. Marvin was advised of the
excitement and danger of a conflict be
tween the citizens and nogroes, and tele
graphed in reply that the colored troops
would be relieved and white troops sent
in their place. The removal of the garri
son at Lake City will relieve Florida from
negro soldiers, which is a matter of con
gratulation to tho people of Florida.
Their presence is prejudicial to the best
interest* of society, and no man is safe
either in person or properly as long as
they remain in our midst.
Tho following is believed to be the re
sult of the election in Florida:
Hon. D. S. Walker, late Associate Jus
tice of tho Supremo Court, is elected gov*
ernor w •• h„ut opposition.
Mujor Kelly, of Pensacola, ia supposed
to be tho run •* ~—i:j-*- r— —

on a leavj of absence, which, doubtless,
will be particularly agreeable to him. Gen.

Novel Cotton Robbery.—Wo have
heard some of the particulars of the ab
straction or wholesale carrying away of
some 30 bales of ootton from Dyke’s sta
tion, on the Macon and Brunswick road,
which amount to about this: The cotton
belonged to the railroad, and was in charge
of a watchman. One night last week a
party of tneu variously disguised, rode up
to the station, quietly captured the watch
man, who was taken a short distance into
the woods, where he was left under guard;
the rest of the party then returned to the
station and loaded the ootton on wagons,
which they had brought for that purpose,
and carried it off. The watchman was
then released—bis captors following the
wagon. Tho’ the parties committing this
outrage are suspected, yet, up to this time,
we have not heard of any arrests having
been made. A. reward of $500 has been
offered for their detection and apprehen
sion, which we trust to see earned by some
of our onergetio officers.—Macon Tele-

The Trouble Among the PeuIaR^
At tho Philadelphia convocation of rep
resentatives of the Fenian Brotherhood, it
was apparent that entire harmony did not
G revail among tho members of that assem-
lage, and the evidences given that two
or three men sought to control the entire
body of Feniuns in this country, was so
apparent, ihut many of the best friends of
the cause of Ire.and feared that the Breth
ren would bo split upon the rock of inter
nal dissension. For some time efforts have
been made by the modoraot men, on both
sides of tho matters at Usue; to heal the
breach that seemed imminent, and pre
vent any public exhibition of the differ
ences. The efl'orts of theso men have, un
fortunately, proven abortive, and in the
Sun of yestorduy a series of resolutions ap
peared. signed by the President of the Fp-
nian senate and nine members of that
body, exposing an alleged improper issue
of tho bouds of the new Irish Republic.
The reputation and standing of the gen
tlemen, who thus warned their country
men against inventing money in the secu
rities that had been prepared, as they
state, “without another authority," is too
well known in this.community to be db*
regarded by the rank and file of the Fe
nian Brotherhood. •
The formal public noLiflcati&i that the
afoiesaid bouds “are invalid and that tbe
issue and sale of such bonds will be dealt
with as a baud," is answered this morning
by i In* following card from tho President
of tho lv nian Brotherhood:
