A resolution was otTored to authorize
the Governor to appoint a committee to
inquiro into tho condition of the banks of
this State. 1
A bill to repeal all luws prescribing pen*
alties for carrying concealed weapons,was
lost on its third reading.
A message was received from hie Excel*
lericy Gov. Jenkins, it was taken upand
mud. it recommended the passage of a
hill to open tho courts of the State to the
freedmen, and to provide for th|ir trial in
criminal oases.
The Seiiato bill referring to this subject
was taken up and substituted by one from
the J udidary committee. Some discussion
ensued, when n division was called, and
the bill passed by a vote of 79 to 49.
At, the hour of 11 a. in. both houses as*
sqmblfed in tho Hull of the House Repre-
ediUtives nnd proceeded to the election of
TStnto House officers.
T he following gentlemen were nomina
ted for the office of Secretarj’ of State: N.
C. Harnet, Benjamin lieck, James 8.
Boynton, S. J. Smith of Townes, J, D.
Krwin, W. T. Mapp.
On tho first ballot Barnet received 70
votes ; Beck 5, Boynton 30 Smith 86, Er
win (i, .Mapp 4*2..
On the second bkllot tho vote was as
follow?: Barnet 77. Beck 3, Boynton 45.
S. J. Smith 30, J. D. Erwin 6, W. T.
Mapp 30.
The nnmos of Mapp and Erwin were
withdrawn.
The third ballot was, Barnet 88, Beyn-
trn 51, Smith IK), Mapp 30.
Tim names of Smith und Mapp were
withdrawn.
Tho fourth ballot, Barnet 110, Boynton
85.
N. C. Barnet having received a majori
ty of the votes cast, was declared elected
Secretary of State.
Tho General Assombly proceeded to tbe
election of Comptroller General.
Tho names of Peterson Thweatt and J.
T. Humes were nominated for the office.
On tho first ballot, the vote was, Thweatt
hi, Burns 101. J. T. Burns having recei
ved a iqqjority of the votes cast, was de
clared electod Comptroller General.
Tho General Asscmblv proceeded to
vote for Treasurer of the State:
The names of John Jones and It. H.
Barn ey wore put in nomination.
After the election hud been proceeded
with for some time, tho name of Mr. Ram-
sny wa« withdrawn, and John Jones re
ceived 103 votes and was declared elected

The General Assembly proceeded to
vote for Slate Printer :
The names of J. \V. Burke, Boughton
Orinu, C. It. Ilanloiter, and Gastel
lo, were nomina ed for thu office of State
Printer.
On tho first ballot the vote was as fol
lows: Burke 77, Bouchton & Ormo 54,
Ilanloiter 57, Gastello 0.
The second ballot was as follows: Burke
90, Boughton & Grnm 38, Hanleiter (>1.
After this vote tho names of Mossrs.
Boughton & Ornm were withdrawn.
The third bullot was, Burke 110, Han-
lei ter 84.
J. W. Burke was declared elected State
Printer.
After tho Scnato had ictired, the House
adjourned to 4 o’clock p. in.
Afternoon Session.—Tho House met
pursuant to adjournment.
A largo number of hills wero read the
second time, and referred.
Air. Bidley oilured the following, which
was adopted:
BesolveJ, That the Committee on Inter
nal Improvements be instructed to inquire
into the rates of freight and taro charged
and now being taken by tho railroads of
this State, and see wlmthor they are viola
ting their charters in the enormous and
unprecedented charges made; and what
h gislution, if any, ought to be had to
protect the citizens of iho Stato therefrom,
and to report to this House by bill or
otherwise.
The Senate i©solution in reference to
Bank suits was taken up and passed.
The Senate announced the passage of
Mr. Kenan’s resolution in reference to
President Johnson.
Tho House took up this resolution and
concurn d therein.
Mr. Barnes moved to appoint a com
mittee of three, to act with a similar com
mittee from the Senate, to wait upon Gov.
Jenkins. This committee consisted of
Messrs. Barnes, Peeples and Frazier.
The Governor having nothing further
to communicate, tho House, on motion,
adjourned to meet on tho 15th of January
next, at 12 o’clock in.
