I did not then know who would bo candU
dates. 1 am now advised that Judge Wop-
rill desires the position for anothor Term,
and that there will be no opposing candi
date.
Judge Worrill has givon very general
satisfaction us a Judge, and I believe a
largo portion of the people hi the Circuit
are content for him still to be Judge.
Under these circumstances I am unwilling
to oppose him, and must therefore decline
being a candidate.
Very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
Porter Ingram,
Order During the Holidays.—Colonel
Woodall, in a communication to the Sun,
declining to sanction a suggestion made
by that paper, says that should the freed-
mnn, during Christmas week, commit any
depredations in the city, ho will aid and
assist, both with command and by his
personal exertions, in punishing and bring*
ing them to justice, as ho would any
violator of law, either civil or military;
but that ho will not forbid the negroes to
travel when and where they please, so
long as they pay their expenses for 60
doing.
This, no doubt, accords with the instruc
lions of the Commandant of the Post, and
is but a fair view of tho rights of the freed
men under existing laws and orders. But
we think that a prudent regard for good
order during the holidays requires that
measures should be adopted to prevent too
great tin influx of the population of tbe
surrounding country into the city, and
that any just regulations which do not
deny to tho negroes tho right of travel,
and do not mitko invidious distinctions
founded on color, may meet tho approval
of tho military authority. There is great
reason to fear that the city will be crowded
during Chrbtnias week to an extent that
will bo a nuisance, even if disturbances of
the peace are prevented. Cannot an order
bo agreed upon, forbidding any strangor,
white or black, to remain longer than one
day in the city timing that week, unless
ho can furnish satisfactory evidence that
ho is engaged in some honest business by
which he supports himself, and that he
has no weapons with him forbidden by tho
laws ?
The Eagle Manufactory to be Revived.—
Wo understand that Dr. N« J, Bussey,
Air. Gregg, of Graniteyillo, &. C.. and
Waitfclden, of Millcdgevillo, (■*., the
purchasers of the real estate of the Eagle
Manufacturing Co., havo secured the co
operation of tho former managers of that
compaii}', and in connection with them
will proceed to organize a new company
to re-build and set to work with dispatch
one or more now Factories.
Wo also learn that all the former slock*
holders of tlio Eagle company, and oth
ers will bo invited to join in tbe enter
prise, of which due notico will be givon
after the Christmas holidays. —Sun.
Miss Carrie (J. Lester, an accomplish
ed special correspondent and agent of the
New York Daily News, is in this city, at
Cook’s Hotel. She is authorized to re*
ceivo subscriptions for the News—an ex
cellent paper, to which the people of the
South are much indebted for the boldness
and ability with which it has constantly
opposed the aggressions of the Northern
radicals and all attempts to oppress or hu
miliate us.
We understand that Miss Lester will
favor our citizens with ono or two of her
high! j ur iquo and entertaining Dramatic
Headings and Hecitntions, on Wednoeday
and Thursday evenings of this week.
Rioting.—A. difficulty occurred on Sun
day evening between some of the young
men of Girard nnd sumo of tho soldiers on
duty here, which ended, wc learn, in acta
of violence and depredation in Girard by
a party of tlio soldiers. As we are not in
formed of the origin nnd progress of the
difficulty, wc forbear to express nn opin
ion ustp tho side most in fault. We havo
heretofore alluded to a bad state of feeling
that seems to exist between some of the
soldiers nnd a port of the people on the
other side of tho river. It has boon mani
fested in several collisions. We have no
idea that the acta of Sunday were author,
ixed or approved by any officer of tbe
United States. Would it not be a good
measure, as long as soldiers from this side
are sunt across tbe river to execute orders,
or permitted to cross at pleasure, to station
an officer in Girard to whom they would
be responsible ?
The city on Saturday.—From our
stand.pnir.i ..f view the city on Saturday,
as far as Broad stroet was concerned,
presented "a map of busy life.” Tho
street in question was thronged with vehi
cles of every kind—from the heavy six
mulo cotton wagon to the elegant and
fragile buggy, whilst the cracking of
whips, tlio shouts of jelius, the neighing
of horses, the braying of nfbles end the
lowing of oxen made the air resonant
with a jargon of sounds.
Sturdy old plnntcrs, with pockets lined
with cash, horso traders and drovers with
long whips, draymen expectant of loads
expressmen perched upon ballahoot of
wagons made from tho last remains of
once elegant buggies, ox-team drivers,
bog drovers, tbe noisy draymen, the
boisterous butcher, the busy merchant,
the lounging freodman, the fifty city stars,
the marshal nn his rosinante, the deputy
on his milky cob, busy merchants, anx
ious buyers, jolly butchers, sidewalks
thronged with beautiful ladies—these and
a thousand more, to say nothing of the
insatiate cotton buyers and saloon keep
ers, could bo soen at a glance to satisfy
tho mind that Columbus “is not dead, but
livnth." In the expressive language of
Jonny Lind, wo can only exclaim:
“Mine got, vot a beebiea."
Go it Columbus! our heart is with
thee I •
Can’t Aveord It.—The Dutch Am

ground of the increase in the eoet of living
in this country, stating that be is to hard

ment and take lodginga over a barber's
shop, but the government of the Nether*
lands havo refused his reasonable request.
There are now in exi-tance no leas than
