A X ENTHI SilASTIC'J MEETING IX
X EW YORK.
New York, November 18.—The Cuban
meeting was very enthusiastic. There
woro repeated cries of war! war ! The
meeting resolvod that tho people of the
United States look to tho great soldier
who now prosides over our Government
to take tho promptest and moat decisive
action consistent with tho dignity and
past precedents of our Government.
That wo adopt the language of Thomas
Jefferson in 1793, when ho, as Secretary
of State, wroto to the Spauish representa
tives in regard to outrages committed by
Creek Indians in the then Spanish territory
of Florida, upon American citizens, which
concludes : “If we cannot otherwise pre
vail on the Creeks to discontinue their
depredations we will attack them in
force. If Spain chooses to consider our
defense against savage butchery as a
cause of war to her, wo must meet her
also in war with regret, but without fear.”
London, Nov. 18.—The Foreign Ollice
has issued a circular that the Government
reserves its decision upon questions of

it his duty to indicate guarantees, other

OX THE YIKGIXllJS AFFAIR.
London, November 18.—The Daily 'Tel

on the Virginius affair, says: Cousidora- j

England to view favorably tho annexation
of Cuba to tho United Stales. That the
Amorican government will await tho re
assembling of Congress before taking ac
tion in tho Virginius matter, is evidence
that its policy will not bo governed by
popular clamor. We do not dospair of a
peaceful solution of tho question. In view
of the difficulty tho United States would
have in rotaiuiug possession of Cuba if
annexed, wo would advise tho Govern

—A ludicrous incident occurred at Hay-
markot Theatre, Loudou, recently. Miss
Edith Gray appeared as Juliet. Sho was
about to pledge Romeo in poison, and
was exclaiming, “I drink to thee ! ’’ when
a soda-water bottle burst with a loud ex
plosion iu the gallery. Juliet had enough
presence of mind not to heed the formid

—An amusing incident occurred at
Eldora, la., the other evening. A man
who had recently buried his wife got mar
ried again immediately, much to the dis
gust of his neighbors, who, to bo re
venged, turned out in largo numbers and
gave him a rousing charivari. Tho easily
consoled husband stood tho racket as long
as possible, when ho came to the door
and administered a scathing rebuke to
the crowd iu this manner: “Ain’t you

—Tho Japaneso professor of dentistry,
instead of sitting in his office willi a

carrying a box covered with brass orna

and wedges. When ho meets with a per
son who wishes to part with an aching
tooth tho wedges are pressed in between
the tooth and tho gum, and aro then
forced down with tho mallet, until, by
hammering and prying, tho tooth iH made
so loose that it can bo pulled out with the
finger. Tho poor patient suffers very
much. Sometimes pieces of the jaw are
broken away with the teeth, and it is said
the patient dies from the wound.
—Tho main current of theatrical taste,
argues the Boston Advertiser, has set
stoadily iu the right direction. Our ac
tors no longer invito apoplexy by the vio
lence of their simulated passion ; we can
listen to wit without being shocked by
obscouity ; wo no longer tolerate startling
incongruities of costume and properties;
we require tho same decorum in orchestra
stalls that wo preserve in church pews—
and in this regard we havo possibly gone
a step too far : we havo banishod the
bombastic doelnmation, tho measured
tread, the formal gestures that furnished
much of tho stnginess of tho stage : socie
ty no longer frowns on tho members of
the theatrical profession, and iu count
less oilier respects tho advancement made,
even iu very recent years, in tho histrion
ic art. and its accessories is as marked as
it is gratifying.
— When a women puts three mackerel
to soak over night in a dish pau whose
sides are eight inches high, and loaves the
pan on a stairway, she has accomplished
her mission and should go houoe. This
was whnt a Division street woman did
Friday night. Filled the pan at tho pump,
and then left it standing on tho stops to
tho stoop, while sho went into tho next
house to hoo how many buttons would be
required to go down the front of a redin-

was to be sure. And there was her hus
band tearing through the house in search

yard, wondering where on earth that wo
man could be, and started down tho steps
without seeing the pan, or over dreaming
that anj’one could bo so idiotic as to leave
it there. Of courso ho stepped on it: or,
ut least, that is the supposition, as the
neighbors who were brought out by the
crash that followed, Haw a horrified man,

moralized mackerel shooting across tho

women assembled in the front room, and
talked in whispers about tho inscrutable
ways of Provideuce, and what a warning
this was to people who never looked
