Atlanta, November 28, 1373. Up to Wednesday Milton Malone felt confident that his sentence would ho com muted. On learning the Governor's de cision he burst into tears, but soon recov ered himself, and said to Wise, the prison wardon. “I dd not care for myself. I feel for my poor mother, but I will not hang, remember that.’’ Wise had heard him say ao before, bud therefore took no no tice of this, as Malone was carefully guard ed. Tlie Scnflbld. On Thursday the scaffold was adjusted in the jail yard, and the hour for the exe cution was set for Friday noon. Evciy- body about the piison manifested the deepest interest and sympathy for the condemned man, and the ghastly prepn- rati ous were kept out of his sight and htenng. Thuridav N in'll t. Tho afternoon of Thursday and Thurs day night up to nine o'clock, the prisoner seemed very composed, and conversed even cheerlnlly with ^hose who visited him, particularly with his father and mo ther, v ho spent a part of the day with him, and whom lie tried to reconcile to his terrible fate. The Suicide. About hah'-past ten tho Warden visited his cell, and lo him Malone said, ‘T have done ns 1 said. 1 lrnvo taken morphine, aud will never stand on a trap with a rope around my neck.” Mr. Wise at once hastened out and summoned Dr. Logan, and after an examination the physician remarked that the prisoner had taken luorphino, but not enough to kill him. Nevertheless ho summoned Dr. Wust- morelund, and that gentleman agreed tha» there was no danger to the prisoner from the poison. The Second Attempt. After the doctors left, Malone wulkod about Ins coll conversing calmly with the officials, and helping himself sevoral times to water, lie lay down partly on his face as if to sleep, with his right sleeve close to his mouth, and after remaining sob few minutes, ho sat up and said, “Wise, send for tho doctors again, 1 havo finished the dose, pei-lmps they would like to see the effects of tlie poison.'' Then ho bade Wise nnd others good bye, laid back on his cot nnd never spoke again. The doc tors were recalled, but despite their every effort, the prisoner continued to sink, aud diod ul ten minutes after eleven this morning. How lie Hied. Milton Malone died without a particle of penitence. Never once did ho ac knowledge the God before whom he was to be summoned. A letter was found in his cell ufter his death, saying he had no belief in a Bible, God or llell, and in ad dition he wrote a note to Wise gloating over bis contemplated suicide, iu which he asserted he bud fooled tho jitdgo and juries Aud this is the end of u mis spent, Godless life, and it calls uloud for a reformation in \lio men who are follow ing in Malone's footsteps. Speculation* Are rife ns to how Malone oblaiuod tlie poison, as ho was carefully watched, aud lunch iudiguatiou is expressed against those who sent it. It is said it cutne in the curt' of a shirt which Malone put on on Thursday morning, and that ho opened tho cl«)tli with his teetli aud so swallow ed it. Ao Reprieve.
