While a Radical Uougrosu is refusing to
investigate charges of wrong doing in
Radical officeholders, it is amusing to uo-
tice the zeal with which Radical officials
in this city are prosecuting the men
charged with being
TAMMANY P.1NO THIEVES.
The telograph has already apprised you
of the conviction of Henry Genet, ex-
Senator and Assemblyman elect, and be
fore this letter roaches you the news of his
escape from tho custody cf a deputy sheriff
and Might—God knows where! “Prince
Hal," as ho was popularly dubbed,
convicted because the jury intended to
convict from the start, 'lhere was no di
rect evidence against hiiu of the commis
sion of fraud, but everybody believed that
he had a Anger in the pic, and the jury,
yielding to public sentiment on the sub
ject, brought in a verdict of guilty.
ItATHBB THAW OO TO HINO BIND
‘Trinco Hid" decided to take a trip
abroad, and no donht ho is many miles
away on the “wide, wide ocean" at this
writing. Mr. Coman, late President of
tho Hoard of Aldermen, ex-Senator Nor
ton, Commissioner Youug and othors in
dicted are also missing. When their c
were called in court this morning, they
were not to be found, and uobody can toll
whore they have gone. To-night it is
stated that Gen. Couiau, Norton and
Young left together in a steam yacht
chartered for the purpose. All of tho
accused but Geuet were at large uuder
bonds. Genet guvo the sheriffs deputy
the slip (y), and rumor says the steam
yacht was in waiting for him with steam
up.
Tweed’s counsel
Are hard at work, preparing their bill of
exceptions, to be argued before tho ap
proaching general term of the Superior
Court. Au impression prevails that the
Court will undo Judge Davis’, work and
graut the ex-Boss a now trial. It may be
recorded as certain that if Tweed gets a
new trial be willnevor again beconvicted.
1 have beard lawyers of prominence say,
that while they havo no doubt he did
steal several millions from the city, the
avidonce given against him was not such
as would authorize a man, on his oath, to
convict. The only wituess against him
was the man Gawey, and lie being an in
former, who confessed that bo has
“poached" to save himself from the pen-
etentiary, is not entitled to implicit be
lief. The Kadicul loaders in this city are
trying hard
TO CONVICT EX-MAYOR HALL,
who is indicted for gross neglect of duty
in signing the fraudulent warrants upon
which the ring got the money. Hall has
been twice tried, and ou each occasion
the jury disagreed —a majority, however,
being in favor of tho accused. Tho third
trial was to have taken place to-day, but
the prosecution was not ready. Hall id
almost mdiffeiout. He says that if nny-
body expects him to huvo discovered
frauds in warrants which had been passed
upon and approved by all the heads of
departments, he wants to seo that man
Mayor. His wit and humor have uot de
serted him hecausoof the prosecutions to
which he is subjected. Nobody believes
him guilty of criminal neglect of duty,
aud nobody believes that he can be con
victed.
Excepting the spasm of excitement to-
day caused by the flight of the ring
thieves,
NEW YORK HAH DEEN DULL
For several days past. The quarrels be
tween Comptroller General Green and the
creditors of the city has become chrome
and nobody notices them. They are
atmwug though. Green, it must be said,
never will pay a bill, uuless the money is
due to some friend of hia. As a conse
quence thy city is sued every day and
judgment rendered. Thereupon the
Sheriff sei/os the pictures in the City
Hall, or the furniture in the Mayor's of
fice, or a Aro engine, or school house, or
anything he can Isy his hands upon. The
goods suited being seriously adver
tised for sale at public outcry. A
day or two before tho sale takes place.

costs. He is fast becoming an unmitiga

Union Springs, Dec. 25 th.
Mr. Editor:—We reached this place in
the dusky shadows of Christmas Eve.
Africa had come to town, and it was with
diAiculty one held hia place on the side
walk. The air was rent with henious
yells and Christmas guusuntila late hour.
Nothing serious occurred, except a citizen
had his little daughter burned with a
Roman candle, causing a serious illness
for a few days.
The Great Eastern rolled in this morn
ing, with a few thousand more Africaue.
The display of the allow on the street was
moagre, the attendance small, take ont
the froedmen, and many of these unfor
tunate, improvident creatures had no
means to enter the canvass. The circus
and wild animals will prize money out
of the country when nothing olse will.
At a oountry town iu Georgia a fow
days ago, the steward of a certain church
ou Sunday prized away to raise the arrears
of au aged minister, to no avail. Next
day, the church members with their fami
lies marched to the circus, paying from
one to Ave dollars each. The country is
bankrupt, but the people oan support the
“Great Eastern" aud a half dozen of a
smaller grade.
This is a very prosperous inland city,
but this fall has checked her prosperity.
Bulloch is a cottou county Ailed with
freodmeu, slow to labor, and of course

There are eight or ton Arst class stores,
with any number of smsllor shops, doing
business here. Mossrs. Rogers A Powell

the latter making a reduction in the price

the price of carpets has been reduced so
