On Sunday night, s boy about fourteen years old, a sou of Dock Oliver, negro train hand on tho Mobile and Girard Rail road, wa* pouring korosene oil from a tin can into a lamp which was lighted, the dame caught and exploded the oau, burn ing the boy so badly that no hope is en tertained of his reoovery. Coal Supply. Our coal dealors have well supplied (heir yards for wintor custom. Tho con sumption of coal has been quadrupled iu the iMt three winters, and wood has been kept at a low rate. Wo notioed, in addi tion to a large pile of Moutovallo coal, quite a lot of Pennsylvania anthracite ooal at one of the yards. Savannah and Memphis Mtallroad. We uuderstaud that the Savannah and Memphis Railroad have secured seven more milos of iron. This will carry the road to Atkins' Gap, a poiut sixty miles from Opelika, Ala., and twenty-three from Childersburg, on the Selma, Rome aud Daltou Railroad. Kendrick, who has been for some days iu attendance upon a district meeting of the Columbus Assooiatiou, held at Bethel Church, in this county, returned ou Sabbath evening in time to oocupy his pulpit at night. He reports a large attendauce at Bethel and au inter esting series of meetings. Many persons from the city wout out to tho meeting on Sabbath morning and returned iu the eveniug. We heard a plan tor ex- preas the opinion that some of the lowest of the river bottom lands in cultivation would be overflowed. Our Necessities. Macon, Atlanta and Montgomery seeui more like cities than Columbus simply because they have wholesale houses and Columbus, with tho exception of Gawley A Lewis, has none. Now that our river is about to he cleaned out, and we can huve water communication all tho year, there is a chance here for live wholesale houses unsurpassed by auy point in tho State ; and there is a certain fortune iu it to those who have the pluck and energy to take hold. We need another dry goods house, a grocery establishment, and a hardware and dnig firm, with live rivals. This will stir up trade, and the splendid position of Columbus should make her command it. All the large Georgia aud Alabama towns sell under our very noses, when we should command much of their trade, and hold the monopoly on the Savannah A Memphis Railroad, as well as the river country of West Florida, Houthwost Georgia, aud Southeast Ala bama. Who will take hold ? Whoever does is sure to win. Tli® Hirer Improvement. This week the engineers will begin work on Woolfolk's bar. Our Sympathies Are with Mr. J. H. Martin, editor of this paper who yesterday received the aad news of tho death of n younger brother in Sunflower county, Miss. Mr. Martin, the deceased, was a good Confederate soldier. He was a planter aud unmarried. Wo learn that Colonel Mustaiu has made his famous Warm Springs unusually attractive this year. It has become quite a family resort. A Gorman would call it a "Kindergarten," aa at this time there is said to be thirty children there under ten years of age, and less than that number of adults. The Enquirer-Hun Tent, Major Calhoun, with his ageut, will have a tent at the Meriwether oamp meet ing, near the White Sulphnr Springs. He wishes the cause of the meetiug all good; I hut ho is going thero exclusively to show that a live newspaper in a large family is uoxt to godliness. Crops, We learn from a gentleman who has just returned from Harris aud Meriwether counties, that the cotton crop is unusually good, and is uow safe. The cottou has suffered a little from drouth, but so far thero have been no indications of worms, i aud on many plantations hands are busy picking.
