An Artemas Ward nays, “why in thin tbua ?” “H'orr*iM. M Yesterday wo aaw and conversed with a number of farmers from Georgia and Alabama. They all nay the “womitna" and caterpillars are in very small foroe thin year. The Weather In charming. The last few dayn have been simply charming, and the hot weather is over. Tho last month waa un usually hot, but at present we oould not have a more delightful temperature. Valnmbne Guards* Armory. The well known and jiopular assistant eaahier of the Chattahooohee National Bank, It. M. Mulford, Esq., has returned from a visit to Washington and vioinity, and is warmly welcomed by his mauy friends. The "Sigger*' Has become tamo agaiu. Thank heaven we oan breathe in quiet, without dread of the fearful storied that reooutly made our hair staud ou cud. Homo one is lying, and aa soon as we can learu who it ia we will speak out very decidedly. Homicide. Emanuel Ellis, tho colored mao who wm struck over the head by Sydney Kim brough, near the farm of Mr. Glenn, on the Hamilton road, died yosterday, Kim brough was stealing and Ellis attempting to arrest him, was struok by K. with Ellis’ guu, as reported a few days ago. Kimbrough is in jail. Gas, Wby iu the name of common sense don’t our citizens use moro gas—illumin- •ting gas we mean. If we showed a pro per appreciation of this enterprise gas would be cheaper. Wa are opposed to water works now, and will be for the pre sent. People who won’t utilize gas have no use for water—as a rule. Yesterday Ex-Mayor Mollkenny and Major Calhoun called on Major Olodowsky. The Major goes down to Woolf oik's bar to make sound ings and consider the beat plan for over coming the obstructions at that point. He thinks tho work is not ditfioalt, and tha present high stago of wator will not inoonvenience him. He knows that the preeent rise will not prevent him from making an estimate of the channel in its lowest seasons. To-day Col. Mu-t*i», Doctor Gilbeil, and A. It. Calhoun go to the Warm Springs, the last gentleman, as wo intimated yesterday, g e* to thu Meriwether camp meeting, near the Warm Springs, in the interest of his paper. Hu behoves no man can he a Christian who borrows a Bible or sponges for a newspaper. Seven per oent, of the whites in Georgia take papers, and ninety, five per cent, in California. Georgia is the beat State South, yet California pub lishes more papers than all the Southern States put together. In this day progresa is shown by the appieciation of the press. The man who borrow* a paper to get the news, as a rule, runs in debt for his grog, and he order* it oftener than his credit will warrant. A Deer Killed. A young and aspiring lawyer of Colum- bos was yesterday in the neighborhood of Box Springs, and while waiting at the station for the train was startled by the haying of hounds, and soon witnesaed the running of a deer—a young doe—and at once the “gnnnists" were up and at it. An exciting phase followed, Messrs. Lisle, Weaver, Hollis aud others joining in it. Tbs beautiful creature was ahot and killed by Mr. Lisle. It was said by the old hunter* that she had lately left her young, and wu may hear of more of such as this very early sport. Our informant vouohea for the veracity of this, ns be says “he •aw tho skinning." And what lawyer would not ? Hus sett County. Our friend, A. G. Jones, of Crawford, Rusaell county, Ala., reports all quiet on the politioal line—ell pleasant. A Repub lican meeting was held there on Saturday, and he was asked to address the meeting, and did so, and his remarks were well re ceived, and the whole disposition ia to harmonize. If the “soallawag" whites would go to farming or mending the roads and drop politios uutil they were natural ised aud oould comprehend the wants of the oountry, thore would be peaoe be tween the raoes. Arrest of a Mule Thief. On Thursday last, one jMper liober- seu, while man, stole a fine mule from Mr. F. J. Mott, in Russell county, Ala. Kobersen was pursued by a party of gen tlemen, through plantations and along by paths aud neighborhood roads, to the dis tance of twenty-flvo or thirty miles, over taken aud carried before Justioe Gate- wood, who, in default of bail, committed him to jail. He is a sorry-looking speci men of humanity, and pretonds to be crazy. The only clothing he had on was a very ancient and seedy pair of pants and a piece of an old shirt. The Kenneeaw Meute. The attention of tourists is called to the superior advantages offered by this line. Passing through one of the most sttrac- j tive routes of travel, aud from Atlanta to j Washington with only one change of oars. Those who desire all rail and are in haste, ! cannot fail to appreciate the beauties of | scenery, the accommodations on the cars ; and at halting places. Having experienced this route, we can recommend it with good will. Editor Columbus EnquirerIn yonr paper of to-day we notioe a report stating that “Mr. Bill Turner was a notorious Radical, and not until the night*'of the difficulty here with the blacks, did he de- olare himself with the whites." Mr. Turner has voted the Democfatic ticket since the close of the war. He an nounced himself a candidate for the Legislature for the next term, and ws have carefully noticed his conduct, and have recoguiz >d in none of it a commit tal to, or affiliation with the Radicals. More tbsn a month since he declared him. •elf subject to the nomination of the Democratic party, and openly stated to the negroes that he would not sacrifice himself for office. He aud his brothers did take a bold and decided stand in the difficulty, aa every true-hearted whits man must do. We think auoh reports ought to be wall foundod before publication. Democrats.
