The oust will bo in the neighborhood of $15,000. The Courte. The County Court meets in regular session next Monday. Twenty-five civil canes aro entered upon tho dookots. Tho criminal docket will bo heavy, as some twelve negroes have beeu bound over for stealing wood. On tho dockot of tho Huporior Court fourteen civil cohos havo already been en tered. With prosperous times, litigation will beoorno more frequent, and tho busi- ueaa of lawyers, which has been quite small for a long period, will largely iu- Amuaementa. Not half the ougugemonta for our Opera House have beou i.i ’o by theatrical com panies that woro concluded at this date laat year. They appear to be waiting to see how buaiuess will open. If the cot ton crop bo large, as it now promises, we will bo overcrowded with them during the latter portion of tho fall, and all winter. Nearly ovory company lost money last season at tho Norih, as well as in the South. The first troupe to appear hero is Geo. Hooper’s Irish Comedy Company, which presents tho plays of “Arrah ua Pogue” and ‘'Colleen Hawn" on the evenings of the 5th and 6th of October. Another Lunatic. Another uegro lunatio woman was lodged in jail Mouday night. Ordinary Brooks has vory wisely concluded not to hold an investigation until he is satinfied she is from this county. He in opposed to crediting Muscogeo with ull tho crazy people of the adjoiuiug counties in Geor gia and Alabama, and this is right. Oth er Ordinaries should do their duty.aud not allow all their crazy people to be brought to our couuty. To au adjoining county a jnuatic uegress had to bo sout back threo times by our authorities, and the official whose duty it was to investigate the case was notified that charge* would bo pre ferred if she came back again. Muscogeo has already some thirteen iumates iu the Millcdgovillo asylum, but it is extremely doubtful whether more than half of them, if that many, belong to tho couuty. Colored Meeting—t ,.700 Pounds of Ha coti for Overflowed Town of Sente, Ala. A beat mooting of tho oolored poople of Boat 0 (Scale), Bussell county, Ala., was held on Saturday last for the purpose of selecting delegates to the county con vention of the Bepublicau party, to bo held At Girard on the 26th inst. Speeches were made by Burtou Long, Col. aud Capt. J. F. Waddell, tho latter we learn by request. About two huudred and forty uegroes wore present, aud a tuoro peaceable and quiet assKemblago was never witnessed. No angry words, no one intoxicated, no guns being carried and no pistols displayed. Everything passed off to the perfect satisfaction, apparently, of both races. There wero 2,500 pounds of bacon iu the depot, consigned to W. U. Betts, for the benefit of the people of the “over flowed districts," but there- was no com plaint made as to why it was not distribu ted, ea it was supposed it would be. The negroee appear to understand the bacon “situation." €■otton Situation-Rain Fall—Oenera! Condition. Wo Mimtnarize the telegraphic reports f the Now York Financial Chronitle of In-1 S durjlay, the 5th inst., for the week ending the previous evening : Texan.—Galveston—One shower, and raining hard when telegram was sent— rain lull 0.06 of an inch, and for the month 7.19. Indianola—ltain for the week 0.25 of an inch, and for the month 1.85—ac counts from tho interior say the reported damage is much exaggerated—drought has hurt the crop badly, but has not anni hilated it. New Orlean* —Showers on six days— rain fall 2.45 inches, tor the month 5.94. Tennessee.—Nashville — Bain on two days, but of no benefit to cotton—rain fall 1.48 inches. IIETBMOMETER AVEBAOKD for weok 70 at Atlanta; 71 at Augusta; 74 ut Havannah; 76 at Nashville; 79 at Now Orloans, Memphis and Columbus; 80 at Macon; 82 at Mobile and Helina; 83 at In- dianola, and 84 at Galveston. THE GENERAL CONDITION on August 15th and later was reported on the average about the samo as last year, uml picking generally commenced earlier. The heaviest complaint of worms comes from the lower counties. The August drouth created much damage throughout the cotton belt, and has been specially hurtful in Tennessee, Arkansas and Northern Mississippi and Alabama. The set back which the crop has at some points met with, no weathor can cure. In Goorgin, though accounts are conflict ing on many points, all agreo the crop is in n critical state, aud tho fruitago much below last season. Florida—condition bottor than lost year; Alabama, bettor than last year on August 15th on prairie lands. Texas compares unfavorably with Inst year; Mississippi, condition worse on August 15th. The drouth extended over Missouri, Kansas and Indiau Territory. Virginia and North Carolina report gen eral conditions good. Hot weather has prevented worms from doing much harm. LOCAL DR I KPS. Suet for Damage a for Twenty Thouennd DoHare. We mentioned several weeks ago, upon authority, that 0. C. Houdor, formerly agent in this city of the Howe Hewing Machine Company, had commenced ac tiou in the courts against thnt corporation for $100,000, for libel. The papers in tho suit have hoen tiled in tho office of the Clerk of the Superior Court, and the ease will be heard at the next term of this tribunal. Tho damges claimed aro $20,000. In his plea, the plaintiff sots forth that the Howe Hewing Machine Company is a foreign corpora tion, created under the laws of Conuecti cut, aud doing business in Coluuihus, had damaged the petitioner $20,000. Plaintiff, C. C. Houdor, was retained and employed by said company to be its ageut iu Colum bus for the sale of sewing machines, etc. He served tho company with fidelity. Be fore and at the time of the grievance plained of, he had left tho servioe of tho company by reason of its failuro to pay for business performed according to con tract. Knowing this, defendant publish ed in the Columbus Daily Enquirer-Sun a fabe aud malicious defamation concern iug plaintiff, and exposing him to hatred and ridiculo, aud injuring him in busi ness. The publication was an advertisement iuserted iu this paper charging Houdor with being “a diminutively insignificant and contemptuously unworthy, unrolia ble, indolent follow, through whom impression has become currant that \v< are about discontinuing our business Columbus, aud all such representations are false," etc. It is signed, “Howe Ma chine Company." llenoe Houder claims he has beeu datu aged in reputation and husinesa, and do mauds that tho defendant appoar in court, eto. Tho attorneys for tho plaintiff are \V liauis A Williams, Esqs., aud Gen. H. L, Benniug. Again f j ton the Kuiite, A fow weeks since the special postal ageut of this scctiou notified Mr. Fred Wilhelm, the popular route agent between tliiH point and Opelika, that ho was sus pended for reasons satisfactory to the “special." Those reasons be rofused to give, and though courting them, Mr. Wil helm was unable tolearn what charges were against him. The men of influence with the government represented the case fully to the authorities, and protested against this arbitrary action of the special. The result is tho Government has di rected that Mr. W. bo replaced upon tho route aud the case be referred to Superin tendent Freuch, at Chattanooga, who has control of this section. Mr. W. is a favorite with all classes, for he is kind, attentive and courteous to all. He is cou- 3oious of no wrong committed, and his friends have shown their confidence in his honor and integrity by their earnest efforts in hia behalf, and the aotion of the Government showa that tho charges, if there were any, of tha “special’ against him, were groundless.
