DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN; COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1874. “Can’t find nothing to do but loaf around the wharves and gallop up and down the alleys, eh ?” remarked his Hon* or, as a young man named Miller, charg ed with vagrancy, was rushed nut. “I’m a stranger in town—dead broke and nobody to borrow of,” replied the prisoner. “I can’t help it that you are dead broke,” replied the oonrt. “I’d be glad if everybody owned a silver mine and two coach dogs. The officer says you have been wandering aimlessly around, sleep ing on bales of hay, taking free lunches, and making no etlort to amass a fortune. You don't seem to have any aim—any am bition.” “Yes, I have,” replied the prisoner. “Where is it, sir—where is it?” asked is Honor, leauing forward. “Did you iver hear of Cicero taking free luucheN ? lid you ever hear that Plato gamboled f trough the alleys at Athens? Ttll me, i -air, did yon ever hear any oue say that < Demosthenes slept under a ooal shed or on a bale of hay ? If you wanted to bo A Plato there would be fire in your eye; , hair would have an intellectual cut; you’d hire a mowing machine to pare those finger nails. Sir, you have got to 6° for four months.—Detroit Free Drew. A Paib op Wits.—There are two uieu likely to be in the next Houso of Repre sentatives who will “enliven the tedium of Y legislative proceedings with a little honest ? hilarity." Those two are Mr. William 6 Waller Phelps, of New Jersey, and Mr. J. Procto#Knott, of Kentucky, of whom the .Brooklyn Eagle says: “Through Phelps’ humor glows the culture of the schools ; Knott’s is racy of the of the Blue Grass region. Pbelps off point an epi gram which will impale a man as a laveiin would; Knott will tell a story against a man which will make him want to craw) into a hole and draw the hole in after him. The Jorseyman will show by something out of a book that his adversary is ineffa bly ridiculous; the Kentuckian Will cite a cross-roads instance to illustrate that his Antagonist doesn’t amount to what he calls a ‘remote circumstance.’ The razor of * sarcasm is what Phelps kills with ; the torpedo of anecdote is what Knott blows g ‘ men to pieces with. Gentlemen both, Phelps and Knott ought to sit at either end of the House, and forage, each in his own way, on all the fools and frauds be tween them.” —The Richmond Dispatch laments the decay of “the Virginia bam,” one of tlio most popular features of the good living of old Virginia before the war. It was formerly cured by the accomplished housekeepers of that day, and was often preferred to the famous Westphalia ham. The Dispatch states that an order Las been lately received in Richmond for a large number of “old Virginia hams” for the most fatuous restaurant in New York. The markets of Richmond, Petersburg and Norfolk were searched in vain for them. They were not to be had. Men who had formerly cured a great deal of bacon have not now a pound to spare. Sheep and hogs iu that State are reported as holding their lives by a most uncer tain tenure, and farmers dread the risk of raising them. —At the battle of “Seven Pines,” it was stated that a sprout of distinguished pre tensions approached General Longstreet and asked it “he would permit him to go into the battle as on independent.” The general replied, “no, I find independent fighters are not to be depended upon. ” There was much wisdom in the reply, and it is equally as applicable to the field of £ politics as the army. In Congressional campaigns, independent candidates are [•boat as unreliable ns independent fight- bra—Leesburg (Va.) Washingtonian. EDUCATIONAL.
