Columbus lost one of her best and most worthy old citizens Sunday morning, in thu death of Mr. William Snow. Mr. Snow cam« to thin city, when quite it young man, from Mail.", and had tesided here ever since. He was n consistent member of the MethndiHtchurclhHiid was a lifelong Christian of practical benevolence, uprightucHH and charity. No man in the community had fewer enemies or enjoyed more general respect. Ho was 01 years of ago, was a painter and glazierby trade, and was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. This order at tended his remains, yesterday, to the grave, in which was buried a man who left behind a record of good deeds and the example of a life of usefulness und honor. Autumn has come and church members will no longer have an excuse to stay away on account of warm woathor. Mortuary. Yesterday Mrs. Roatrite, the beloved wife of Mr. A. V. Rout rite, a merchant of Columbus, was buried. She died very suddenly at their residence in this city Hunday morning. Tho funeral took place from the Presbyterian Church, ltuv. On Sunday night last, as a freedinau on horseback was about'„* passing Rull creek bridge ou the lower Cusseta road, on his way to Mr. Jos. Kyle's plantation, he found the entrauco to the bridge blockaded by four men—two whites aud two blucks—who ordered him to stop and domundod his money. They were armed with guns and pistols, and when they at tempted to seize his horse, which was a young and spirited animal, ho turned and started at full speed. They fired on him, but fortunately missed I lie mark. Tho rider was scared, and did not dare attempt to reach his destination, but re turned to Columbus. lie had been sent for medicine for Mr. Kyle’s son, and soot after daylight Mr. Kyle, with Dr. Htau ford, drove to tho plantation, and arrived barely in time to save tho young uwiu’s life. Home action must be taken to prevont a recurrence of such outrages. Having no other road, wo don't wonder tho boy returned to the city. The papers of the ship be ing destroyed, the number of ihe passen gers is not known, but it is said to have been about one one hundred, and tho deaths of sixteen are said to bo ascer tained.” —The Chicago Tribune culls attention to tho fact that wheat, corn and oats are now selling at very nearly ilio same rates a pound—oats being a trifle the highest of these groins. While we think cotton will go still lower, we are nevertheless satisfied that within a month the great oottou centres will awake to the fact that tho cotton crop is much shorter than last year. It is already conoeded by many cotton men that the An Atlanta correspondent of tho Aligns- ta Chronicle writes as follows to that pa per: Governor Smith has recently received n lotter from the Turkish Consul at Now York, making inquiries about tho facili ties aud inducements for settling immi grants iu this State. Ho states that u nviuerous community of Armiuians, who aro suffering religious persecutions from their Turkish conquerors desire to form n colony and locate somewhere in Ameri- oe, where they can pursue their business ami their worship unmolested. The Tur kish Consul says they are Christians, and since the accession of Arminia to tho Tur kish Empire they have suffered from re ligious persecution, and for this reason alone desire to emigrate. He represents them as thrifty and industrious. Every body planted more corn than last year, aud eousiderably loss cotton. Reports from tho West show that the cottou crop was seriously damaged by tho late drouth, and now the caterpillav is raging through Georgia and Alabama, destroying the top { erop.
