Safe Arrival, We are glad to know that the steamer Hau Balvador, from New York, arrived safely in Havauuah yesterday at 1 o’clock p. m. A number of our citizens were aboard, uud ou account of the recent gale on the coast some apprehensions were eutortaiued for her aafety. Thi nagvoea are organizing fully for the election next Wednesday. They have two negto candidates In the field, and are oanvami&g the county, urging every ne gro to pay his taxes. It is, in our opin ion, the moat important crisis in the his tory of our State and county since the war. The negroes are making a grand final effort to overthrow Democracy or the white man's government. If they succeed, Georgia in a year qvill be in a far worse condition than Alubatna is to day. It is important that every white man tote and work. Judge Williams and T. W. Grimes, Esq., our candidates, tire doing all in their power, but they need the aid and co-operation of every vo ter. What has booomo of our Exccutivo Committee ? Before this time last elec tion Gspt. C. A. Redd had everything in working order, and all appointments made. Cannot the committee get to work and let the people hear from them ? Stir up the poople and urge them to earnest and united action, for this indeed in a mo* montoui election, and onr dofeat is the signal for the Civil Rights bill success, The Cneuds of Mr. Dexter uud Dr Tuggle will be glad to huar of their safe arrival iuBoston. The Democrats have a large club at Trey wick'sCrosH-roads, in Russel couuty, Ala., and are at work in dead earnest for success in November. If you would rather have Clothing made 13 order ut short notice, Stranse A Gold smith's is the pluoe. They have a splen did stock of Piece goods. Their tailors are plyiug the needle vigoroualy. out I If On the War rath. We learn that T. W. Grimes, Esq., and Jadga Williams leave the city to-day fora thorough canvass of ths county. They are the nominees of the Democratic party, and of courso will get the solid support of every white votor in the county, but they go te speak witk the poo ple face to face, and urgo on thorn the importance of going to the polls, and aeeiog that their neighbors and frionds do likewise. A thorough canvass is need ed to lot the people know when the elec tion takes place, and what taxes are re quired. We wish thorn n pleasant trip and abundant aucoess. Whilo on the anbject, wo will remark for tho information of those who do not know, that the election takes place on noxt Wednesday, the 7th of October. In order to vote, it is requisite that each voter bos paid his tax for 18751. Tho tax- es for this year are not necessarily to bo paid before voting; only those of lust year Nearly every white man has paid his tax, nnd we trust will not forget to vote, and thus keep down, and forovor bury the hopes of the Radical party with its ini quities. Sheridan A Mark, This very superior company played at tho Opora Houso lost night to an uudionce that wo fear is indicative of Columbus’ love of fun and appreciation of genuine ability. Tho house should have been packed, for rarely Las there been a more enjoyable performance in onr city. Slier- idan A Mack are genuine artists, nnd their changes of character and costume bor dered on tho marvellous, while everything they tlid was capital. M’lle Eveline and Big. Constantine were very good in their roles, as was Dan Devere. One of the features of tho entertuiument was the su perior character acting of Miss Alicia Jordan—she did the “swell" to perfec tion, and iu addition to being very pretty she is a fine vocalist. Lester and Allen and Miss Etta Arnold uro n host iu them selves. The dancing of tho Htunrt sis ters won much admired. The panto- mime|was evidently eut down. Tho wonder is that these artists did so well in tho face of u beggarly array of empty honchos. We wish to say to tho strangers here that Columbus is not us dead as it looks, aud we promise them, should they come this way again, a crowded house. Our people are poor, cheerless nnd disheartened, and those who could really enjoy such an entertain ment as wo had last night are, as a rule, “mighty" poor, aud those who are not poor are infernally stingy. In about Rix years from now wa expect to see Colum bus rising, l'leaso say this wherever you go, aud send live people here if you cau. local mmimn. in Rail Road Clreles, Captured, Wilkorsou, the white mau who escapad from the bailiff a few days ago, waa re captured ou Mouday by the Sheriff of Stewart county. He was scut to Musco gee jail with two uegroes. There are now nineteen prisoners ia our jail, and four teen on the chain-gang. When will the wicked cease from troubling Y This is not a conundrum. Yesterday we had the pleasure of a visit through the extensive depots of tho South western, and Western Railroud, aud found the obliging ofileera busy ship ping eottou and receiving freight. Cot ton is being shipped in large quantities over each road. We saw that the Wes tern Union Telegraph Compauy are plac ing thoir wires iuto tho Southwestern Railroad ofiico, and wo learu that the Southern aud Atlautio line will shortly do the sumo. When this arrangement in made, passengers aud railroad olRoiuU can send mcHsuges over either lino, with out the trouble of coiniug into tiro city It will he a great convenience and save» vast deni of trouble. These rends ar< well officered by obliging meu, and it is some pleasure for a geullenutu to meet them, as he gets civil aud willing tumw to all questions propounded. Reported Sickness. From accounts received from the dis tricts around Columbus it seems there is considerable sickness. Our doctora have complained of dull times, but now it seems they are all overworked. Iu the Northern Liberties and Wynton consider able sickness is reported amoug children. While Columbus itself ia not free from chill and fever. The recent cold snap has put mauy to bed with sore throats and bad colds. Vagrants, Tho dull tinios and great scarcity of mouey does not seem to disturb tho equilibrium of the many idle negroes and whilo men who all the year have hung about the street corners, an eye-sore to ths iudustriouN public. How these poo pie live is a mystery to every one, exoept themselves. Every now aud thou one is picked np with somebody’s corn, eottou or other property, aud for a season be comes a member of the “Pou Guards," uuder Captain O’Pry, aud rendezvous at Johnson’s inn. The great majority of them, however, seem to he doing noth< iog, without even a semblance of sufii- c.eut energy to steal. The farmers huvo woik for all of them in their eottou fields, if they will consent to ooufiue themselves to picking iu the day time. Night picking will uot do. T. Ktowurt spends more for ad vertising each year than ull tho merchants in Georgia put together, but then they aro well known and he is n poor fellow, and quite obscure. —Who is going to run against Harris. We can’t afford to go Cougress, otherwise, we. —Rob Williams thinks Demosthenes could make a whaling speech, for a fellow that didn't have the advantages of a com mon school education. —Long words in speech or writing are like long clothes on a deformed woman, they'are used to hido a palpable defect of tho understanding. —Ton years from now Columbus will bo tho most important city iu Georgia. We havo no prophet now, but wo hopo to have then. We don't liko conundrums ; but, seriously, what right, iu the bla/.e of this nineteenth century light, havo men with fourteenth century ideas to live ? —The simplest words uro the strongest. The brightest thoughts rood least thought to comprehend. Men who wait to advertise till they get money, will wait till their widows col lect their life insurance. Every business man should look upon his loading paper as a lodger that shows the condition of the place in which his money is invested. Our rhymer is writing a poem on long words. Next week the “Weekly" will bo the largost paper in Georgia, and second to none in mattor and make-up. Girard Boat, Aim, There was a well Attended business meeting of the Democratic and Conserva tive Club of Girard Beat, Russell county, Ale., lost night It waa arranged that the Census Committees of the Beat will meet At the School-house on Saturday next, At 9 o’oloek, a. m., to oompare lists and arrange the registry of votes of the Beat. The Beat meeting to select dele gates to the Nominating County Conven tion at Seale, will be held in tho School house in Girard at 10 o'clock, a. m., on Saturday next.
