died eleven years ago. In 1S3W they
bought the property where the present
store is located, and removed thither that
year. The great fire of March 3, 1847,
destroyed their building and much of
their stock. Shortly after the present
structure was erected under the personal
supervision of Mr. M., and it is, perhaps,
the best constructed store in the city, hav
ing separate fire-proof walls and other
permanent advantages. It is the favorite
house for insurance agents to show off to
the specials when they make their rounds.
In 1853 Mr. Wade retired and Middle
brook A Co., the Co. being Wm. Morri
son and S. H. Heard, succeeded. These
two gentlemen attended to the manufac
turing in New York, while Mr. Middle
brook sold the products in Columbus.

Ho has over been noted for the excellence

requirements of a progressive age. By

he has'amassed a handsome competency,

Mr. Middlebrook is a native of New
York, but came South at au early ago, and
has since been fully identified with the
interests of the country, aud became a
veritable Southerner with all the tact and
energy of the North. In ante-war days
he ran with the tiro “mersheen," hut

Radical Negro Meeting Tetter4mg.
One was held iu the Superior Court
Room yesterday. 'I he managers intended
it to bo a mass meeting, but only some
seventy-five were pri sent, and those main
ly from the country. Several slumbered
swoeily during the ^pooches, but those
who had their dinners with them clung
to tho food with the tenacity of death for
fear it would bo convortod into some
other nigger.
About 1 o’clock Ketcbnm moved that
J. D. Hudson bo chairman, and Albert
Hendricks secretary. Carried. Hudson
ssid the term of tho executive coinmittoa
elected two years ago, had expired, and
they must elect a new one.
Ketchuin moved tho following be Ap
pointed as the executive committee for a
year; Van Jones, G. P. Lewis, R. P.
Porter, J. I). Hudson, Lymas Jones, A. J.
Ketclmm, Peter Uogors, Gib. Cook, Hen
ry Cook, aud Alfred Hudson—all negroes.
Adopted.
Then R. G. Lewis, one of the uogro
candidates for the Legislature, read a
speech of half an hour long, of hum
drum common places, aud “of courses,"
calling upon the m-groes to voto for him
self and the other colored candidate ;
praising tho greut negro race [it's very
great in Africa] ; telling his heareis if
things didn't go right this fall, to resolve
never to raise another crop in Georgia ;
wont the whole hog for Civil Rights—and
more of such rubbish. Ho is a mulatto,
of very ordinary attainments.
Ketohum followed iu his usual style.
He is a fino daolaimor aud uses good lan
guage, and employs it in such a way as to
excite more than any other negro rase
hatrod in his ignorant hearers. Ho has
admitted Mr. Walter Johnson, our clever
postmaster, bought him with a promised
clerkship, aud thereby creates a suspicion
that the Democrats paid bis price Inst
year. Ho was heavy on false frienls,
etc., advised all tho negroes to pay a dol
lar, aud vote for the nogro oaudidatos for
the Legislature on next Wednesday,
is one of the civil righters.
The Democrats should nerve themselves
to greater exertion and every man should
resolve to be at the polls to beat these
negro candidates. Tho election takes
placo Wednesday.
It is uauseating to hear such vapid re
marks about the intellectual advancement
of the negro. Why dou’t they advance
in Africa? They have there been tho
most degraded of races for thousands of
years.
Funeral of a Fireman at Opelika,

J. H. Ticknor read the Episcopal sorvico,
and Rev. C. A. Baker, of the Presbyterian
Church, delivered a brief eulogistic dis
course. The corpse was conveyed to tho
grave, the Troy delegation acting as pall

During their stay in Opelika the Trojans
