Wo are glad to learn that the tirst volume of this work, jimt issued from the job oftloe of Mr. Tom Gilbert, is meeting with general acceptance, and that he is likely to sell out bis entire edition at an early day. The work should be ill the hands of every family in the city for his torical information and reference. There are also many former residouts scattered throughout the country who will peruse its pages with much interest. The second volume will be issued in a few months if subscript ions justify it. Price $1 per volume. Doom for « Barber. Marshall, over the river, until yeator- day boasted of a colored barber, who was driving a thriving business in hia totiso- rial profession. Vosterday morning be found hirt shop bursted open and bis im plements and appurtenances thrown down the river bank,'as much as to say the bar ber was not wuutrnl there any longer. The graceless scamps who committed the outrago cannot be found. The probable canHt), it is said, is attributed to the fact that the barber made himself very oftt. oiouB iu intomieddling with the Colum bus eleotiou on Wednesday, aud perhaps challenged one or more parties who at tempted to vote. Mur rled in a Store. A young man named Fred Clark and a good looking girl named KatcUe Ingram were noticed on Broad street yesterday luoruiug in search of a Kquiro to make them one. They ware from Alabama^ and evidently a ruuaway couple. They were invited into Bedell tF Ware’s shoo store by the junior partner, who generally manifests strong sympathy for parties with such good intentions. A license was procured, Justice McCahey sent for, and the twain were made one iu the sim plest forum of law. The young man was evidently iu earnest, and responded “Yes," with an unmistakable emphasis, while the bright-eyed maiden hlushingly yielded acquiescence. A by-stander (teu or Ilf teen persons had congregated to wit ness the corcinony') asked the man if he was not from Alabama. “I have been liviug there,” lie ropliod, “but I’ve got all 1 waut from there now, and I don’t know where I shall live iu the future.” The matter of residence didn’t seem to trouble hiiu a bit. He was happy enough without a home. LAUNCH OF THE STEAMER OK a toino or ufautt—cr THE WORLD IN SPIED—JC SPEECHES, < HAMPAONP. AND PUNCH—A COMPANION BOAT. Columbus has shown speed equal to the most rapid of the age, and every one wonders. This fogy town, which has in vested since 18G."» (in which year she lost fifty millions by invasion; some four mil lion dollars iu cotton manufactories, lias just launched a steamboat capablo of car rying five hundred bales of cotton, and will have her completed inside of forty working days. Has such a feat ever been accomplished, even by fast Yankeedom ? Thirty-two working days ago most of tbo timbers were in the forests. THE LAUNCH took place yesterday morning about ton o'clock in the presence of a considerable crowd. The hull and u portion of the up per works had already been finished. Hhe was let into the river broadside, and permitted to go dowu very slowly. Move ments were controlled by ropes. With the assistance of a little pushing she gli ded into the stream beautifully, and sat on the waters like n thing of life. Only Mr. Frank Torbett and Cnpt. Johnson, the agent of the Central Line, wore on board. The launch took place from the bank just below the Mobile ond Girard Bnilroad bridge. As soon as she touched the waves the nanio of GEO. W. WYLLY wan nailed to her post by Cnpt. Johnson. She is called after a prominent commis sion merchant nnd director of the Central Railroad and Banking Company in Savan nah. Tlio following is told iu expan at ion : When the proposition was made by that corporation to put a light-draught boat on the river, Capt. Sam Whitesides, General Agent of the Central Line of Bouts, suid he would huvo her finished in forty days. Mr. Wylly immediately bet suppers and champagne that he could not do it—the thing was impossible. The Captain ini. mediately took it. The bet, however, being counted from its date, and Sundays uot omitted, haH been lost by Captain Whitesides, yet Mr. Wylly will have to pony up with another supper and wines, because of the name given. The boat will he completed inside of forty days. THE DIMENSIONS of the Wylly are 11.% feet in length, T2 floor, 24 beam, hold. She now, with a good deal of wuter pumped iu her, draws six inches forward and eight nft. She can curry five lmudred bales of cotton on two feet nine niches of water, and three hundred bales on less than two feet. She is to have very little cabin accommoda tion. She is to have two high pressure engines, each of twenty-live horse power, cylinders nine inch boro and four feet stroke. To give lightness the boilers are of the railroad engine class, sons to avoid the presence of so much iron and heavy brick work. These engines have been built by the Columbus Iron WorkH. THE ENTIRE WORK has been under the auporiutendanco of Capt. Charles Blaine, who lias built many of the best steamers on our river. Every thing is of the most substantial character. All has been done under the general su- perinteudeco of Cuptuin Samuel H. Whitesides. The two managed the launching. They have he6n assisted by Capt. Johnson, the local agent. The vim and push of the enterprise was evidenced yesterday. Directly after the launch, the boat was conveyed to the wharf, and iu the afternoon was found oil her the shaft aud cylinders in position, and the work men were busy putting on the upper works and arranging for tho engines. THE COST of tho boat will be $8,000 to $0,000. Tho engines will be on board iu six days, and in less than ten days the steamor will bo plying the river. JOLLIFICATION. The officers of tho boat gave a pleasant outertainmont on board iu tho afternoon, which was attended by many leading mer chants and business men. it was an im promptu affair, but very delightful. The waters swept by noiselessly, champagne sparkled, and punch dulcet, delicious aud dreamy, and good sayings diffused general happiness. Col. It. L. Mott was unani mously elected presiding officer, and G. Gunby Jordan, secretary. Everything and everybody, workmen ami all, wore toast ed, and enjoyment reigned. The lnuiu speaking by Maj. Allen, who spoke of the importance of the river trade, and the gen erosity of tho Central It. It.; Maj. Calhoun ou various interests of Columbus; Capt. ltedd for tho city schools; Dr. Bussy and G. Uuuby Jordan for tho factory inter ests; Prof. Battle for tile public schools. Many others made a few pleasant re marks. The nicest thing was the speech of Maj. Calhoun, who was offered ten dollars by Superintendent* W. L. Clark to answer a toast for him. It was made if Mr. Clark himself was speaking, and brought down tho boat. Other gen tlemen offered fives for the Major to speak for thoui, but the cash not being paid as required, lie declined. Adjourned with best wishes for the Wylly. A COMPANION BOAT, It is said, will soon Wo built here for our river by the Central Railroad and Bank ing Company, nnd the Julia St Clair trans ferred to the Tombigby river. Tho Board of Education met at the Court House yesterday morning, when there were present Juuies T. Gray, Presi dent, Dr. G. B. ffrurd, C. E. Johnston, and N. G. Oattis, Secretary. By Dr. Heard : “Resolved, That this Board deem it inexpedient at this time to have auy bill looking to the increase of taxation for school purposes brought be fore the next General Assembly.” No other matter of special importance was brought before tho Board for their action. Twelve white and six colored schools have been established. Last year they •aged nineteen pupils each. Whites teach the white schools, and negroes the colored. The people generally are strongly in favor of the State adopting the plau now in vogue iu Kentucky—that is, to give the taxes from the whites to white schools, and those from tho blacks to the colored schools. President Gray has written to Commissioner Orr on the subject. LOCAL JIR1EES. —All quiet at the Court House yester day. Nothing but trampled grass to tell of the Into conflict. —Major J. J. Bradford, Clerk of Supe rior Court, and Capt. McAllister left yes terday on a brief business trip to Tennes see. —While Northern mills are slackening up, Georgia is increasing her looms. —A boy out West drank ink. and the sequel was an iuk-west. —The river has hardly enough water to flout a mosquito. It can bo forded near the lower bridge. —There is more indolence in the mind than in the body. —The world is sure to find out an lion- < st man, but it will find him out a great doal quicker if he advertises. —'1 he best way for a man to acquire a. tine flow of lauguago is to stub his toe against a raised brick. —The school boys have fairly inaugu rated the system of fall fights. —Tho cotton crop of Muscogee county will uverage about tbo same us last year. —Kctcbum’s late exertions were not in behalf of the negroes,or against the Dem ocrats so much, as it was personal spite against Postmaster Walter Johnson. The cause is the latter would not appoint him a clerk in the Postoffice, for which he has the thanks of every white man and many of tho best colored citizens. Perfect Eit nnd Satisfaction Guaranteed.
