During the cotton week ending last night, the Western It. It. of Alabama brought to Columbus en route for Savan nah and New York, 2,717 bales cotton— 73 from Mobile, 1,083 from Montgomery, 1,032 from Helms, 09 from Opelika, West Point and other stations, 90 from Vicks burg, 0 from New Orleans. The total through movement by this route, since September 1st, is 5,177 bales—1,031 from Mobile, 1,798 from Montgomeiy, 1,370 from Helms, 051 from West Point,Opelika, Ac.,90 from Vicksburg, 0 from Now Orleans. Yesterday was the anniversary of the big Are of 1848, which destroyed four of the principal business blocks, and s large number of side street shops and residences. It coiumeuced in a black smith-shop in the rear of whero Musco gee Home building now stands, swept across to Broad street, carrying every thing before it ou both sides of that street, down to Bridge row and Columbus Iron Works. In point of profit we should think one aoro of cane equal to four of cotton, and tho cultivation far leas expen sive and difficult. Diversification of crops is the great desideratum iu this seotion, and we are glad that some of our planters are at last seeing the folly of staking all upon cotton. A few more years of bitter experience will convince our agricultu rists that something clso besides cotton is needed to make them again prosperous aud happy. Arrost and Discharge of a Policeman* Policeman Win. Wood was yesterday takeu before Justice Chappell ou a war rant sued out by Alfred Tarver, colored, for alleged maltreatment of the said Tar ver by the aforesaid policeman on Wednes day last (election day.) The charges in the warrant not being sustained, it was dismissed and officer Wood discharged. It seems that Wood, in endeavoring to enforce an order of the Sheriff, keeping voters oitside of a certain lino, was ro- duoed to ihe necessity of giving Tarver a pnsh or shove to enforce compliance. This was about the extent of Wood’ll offence. Tarver carried the mutter first before thelL 8. Commissioners, and they failing to tAko cognizance of it, he then went before Justice Chappell, with the above result. Tarver is reported to havo said yester day that he will, in future, go into elec lions armed with weapons to protect himself. Feather Dusters. During the few years he has been here he has added wonderfully to the business of the Western Road, created special rates for our manufactories, and so faithfully attended to his duties, and governed affair* so ably, as to be one of the moat popular gentlemen in Columbus and merit and receive the approval and admiratioti. He carries to his wider and more important field youth, ceaseless en ergy, experience, tact and plenty of brain. Columbus hates to lose him, for ho is a son of whom she is proud. Ho left last night. Success and happiness to him. A Merchant of character and integrity calls our attention to a cose of potty pec ulation as a sample of hundreds of others happening almost daily in tho community and touding to bring iiumoritcd discredit upon the mercantile public. The lady was enraged at the Hiimll quanti ty of blitter sent. Mho asked the boy where ho got it, and to cover up his first fault ho told a lie as to placo. Mo when the lady visited the place namod, tho but ter transaction was denied, though the dealer acknowledged selling tho boy a dime’s worth of apples. Although n small matter, fur his own reputation’s sake the merchant spent severnl hours in trying to arrive at the truth. It was final ly found that the butter had been pur chased in a distant part of town. This kind of petty thioving is belug extensive ly practiced by children and servants, and consumers think they are swindled by the dealers. Tho Bulletin, mentions the affair in this manner: At one o’clook in the morning tho Cali fornia Quartette, with Barlow and Wilson, ell of the Haverly Minstrels, entered the Hall, according to a previous invitation, nod as thev stepped upon the threshold of the door they were greeted with a round of applause both from the gentlemen nud ladies. Mrs. Stamps and Shropshire then ex tended the hospitalities of their tables to the gentlemen who, within a perfect wreath of the fairest of Louisiana’s daughters, sent out upon tho air choice and rich melodies, which have left a last ing impression upon nil whoso fortnno it was to hear them.
