Haverly’s Minstrels gate last night their second performauco at the Opera House, and a most enjoyable affair it was. The troupe are children of laughter, and the fact of the house being slim is the best evidence of our poverty and low spirits. If we did not know there was a good reason for this, we would feel like com pressing our lips and saying something harsh. If Haverly comes here in a month or two we will promise him and his tal ented artists a full house and a warm re ception. Ho is going to Macon and Au gusta, and will be in Atlanta during the Fair week. Behind this are ample spaces for storing paper and other purposes. Tho pleases are in tho collar, which has been admirably arranged fur them. The premises are to be still further im proved by tho proprietor of the paper, by placing a largo tank on the roof, so as to furnish tho entile building with water, by introducing steam powor and un elevator. The city received Home $2,5(H) ia her interest iu the State fund, ami $000 for the oolored schools from the Peabody fund. Tuition costs the city $0.01 per pupil. Nine dollars comprises the cost of fe pupil’s tuition in tho highest branches of our public schools, aud all but three dollar* (paid for use of books) is included in the general city tax. Such is the ad mirable system that prevails. —Harris county Superior Court is now in session. Dr. Gilbert found tho watch under a door step. M. Bakor, tho Democratic nominee for Probate Judge of Russell county, Ala., is actively canvassiug, and thinks Ms chances of success aro excellent. —Tho factory operatives who havo been kept idle for two woeUs by tho suspension of Mill No. 1, on account of putting iu a new and more powerful wheel and tho addition of machinery, think they will bo able to resumo work to-day. —“Old Pompey,” colored, whoso death we uoticed yesterday, was formerly a slave of John Godwin, and was freed iu consideration of valuable services many years ago. At present it has eighteen inmates, but averages twen ty-five. As far as possible the home is made self-sustaining. Eaoh inmate has a garden and is urged to piodaoe os many vegetables and raise os much poultry os possible. They are uot allowed to have pigs.
