JJAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1874.
Tbe Fair Already a tftnccees.
Mr. Johnson, the Secretary, informs as
| officially that there is already positive as-
iurance of enough entries to make the
■how of our Fair next week equal, at any
jbmje, if not superior to that of Maoon last
Tho stock and swine department will be
Hppeoiatly line, there being over fifty
& blooded aud racing horses on the grounds
y Already. The poultry show will be line
beyond compare ; the Mayor had to or
der yesterday several hundred new coops.
As to piokleH, jellies, aud other specimens
of hotiKowivery, he thinks such a lot will
never have boon gathered together before
nor since.
Mr. Johnson’s only fear is (hat such will
be tbe rush of goods and animals, that
the managers will find themselves run
over and unable to properly baodle the
mass. This fear, though, he is doing all
that can bo done to reuder groundless.
Iu regard to the crowd, that will bo all
that Atlanta can possibly accommodate.
With better hotel arrangements than any
^Georgia city, she will find herself taxed
|o the utmost, nnd wero it not that her
proverbial hospitality will tend to throw
open every private house in her limits, she
Would be badly outdone.
But let every man, woman aud child ia
Georgia, who can get off, come to the
Fair, and wo promise them at least better
MOomuiodations than they had during tho
war. The show will be one that will
make every Goorgiau proud of his State.

The Owl.
he most wonderful thing about an owl,
l Josh Billiugs, is the solium impor-
j of tho whole kritter, as he sits on
ercli, looking over the world he seems
to own.
Next to a newly elected Justice of the
Peace, seated on the benett, with a poor
cuss befoio him charged with stealing a
loaf uv bread, the owl has more rare and
unfathomable wisdom in his face than
enny thing ancient or modern.
I have looked at them half an hour
atiddy, until I wuz ashamed uv my itnpu-
dense, to see if they winkt, and I never
■oe them do it.
pwould thank some one to toll me if an
I ever duz wink, and if he duz, how of-
is would be a good subjekt for some
ding societ}’ in enny of our colleges,
wera to this phenomena, post paid,
etfully solicited.
1 kilds his nest in sum vakaot
ov a tree, and lays how wenny
eggs I han't toll, but Bumwhore less than
a nundrod I am sure.
Thia stands to rcuzon, and reazon sol-
dotu lieN.
Owls are not luvly to eat ; no matter
how you fry them, they rosemblo in flavor
the meat of a yeller dog, if enny know
how that tastes.
I don’t. x
I have shot owls ; it’s a good deal like
shooting into a feather pillow ; they are
fall feathered from their toe naleH clean
up to the base of their bills, and when
the feathers are pikt off from them, they
shrink as bad as sum other things I know
ov with tho cotton all taken out.
Owls are plenty, but I don’t know* nz
this iz enny thing in their favor.
