Courtship*of S*v»ffei».
Among the aboriginal blacks of Aus
tralia, courtship as the precursor of uiar
riage is unknown. When a young war
tior is desirous of procuring a wife, ho
generally obtains one by giving i
change for her a sister or some other
female relative of his own ; hut if there
should happen to bo uo oligiblo damsel
dinongagcd in the tribe to which ho be
longs, then he hovers around the on
oainpuionl of some other blacks until he
gets au opportunity of seizing ono of
their .leubras, whom, perhaps, ho*has
seen and admired when uttomliug c
the feasts or the eorrobories. Iiis mode
of paying his addresses is simple and
qBiraoiiH. With a blow of a war club he
s Whs The object of his “affection," and
aa ah#'recovers her senses, brings bor
hone to his own gnuyale iu triumph.
Another method with wife stoalers is
aaoertain tho caiup tire beside which the
girl whom he covets sleeps. When he
gains the knowledge he requires, ho
oreejM close to the cutup on somo dark,
windy night, and, stretching out his
"k inserts its barbed point auroug her
flowing locks, turning it slowly
Dd, some of hor hair becoming on-
led with it; then, with a sudden jerk
i aroused from her slumber, and
yes open she feels the point of an-
r weapon pressing agaiuat hor throat,
neither faints nor screams. She
I well the slightest attempt at escape
nu will cause her instant death ; so,
sensible woman, she makes a virtue
canity, and rising silently, sho fol-
f tier captor to begin a life of toil
I which she is not released till death.

Among tho diHtinguiRhod oflloora who
accompanied Washington during the Rev
olutionary War were Maj. Gen. Lord
Stirling and Baron Steuben.
Stirling was vory proud of his title of
“lord,” which gave him moro outward
distinction, though not more real respect,
in the Revolutionary army than it would
liavo done among the British regiments.
Tho story is told that being present At
the execution of a soldier for disertion,
when tho poor fellow cried out, “Lord,
have mercy on mo!” Stirling thought
that he must he the lord rneaut, aud ex
claimed with warmth, “I won’t, you ras
cal ! 1 won’t have mercy on you !”
Baron Steuben was au excellent, milita
ry officer, especially careful in looking
after tho drill and accoutrements of his
troops, but ho never became a completo
master of tho English language, and often
made laughable mistakes.
Dining ono day with Gen. Washington
at Dobbs' Ferry on tho Hudson, tho con
versation turned ou Ashing, and the Baron
remarked that flshiug might be n fine
thing for some persons, but not for him.
Ilo had tried it once, and after sitting
three hours in a boat in tho hot buii, ho
had caught only two fish.
“What kind of fish wore thoy?” in
quired Washington.
“I am not sure, but I think one of thorn
was a whale,” replied tho Baron.
“A whale, Baron, in tho North llivcr !”
“Yes, I assure you, a vory flue whale,
was it not ?” asked the Baron, appealing
to ono of his aides-de-camp.
“Au eel, Baron.”

I understood the goatleuian to say it was
