SUIIUIITER OF T1IK IX.NOCKVrS. I
.GEORGIA STATE FAIR.
;-oclal Correspondence Gmquirsr-Sun.]
Atlanta, Oa., October 21.
The Fair oponod yesterday with a bot-
ir Arrangement of Articles on exhibition,
sides additions to the collections in the
Btrioiifl departments. The nttondance,
H too, was larger, but still does not como up
to Anticipations. It is estimated that
there were six or soveu thousand persons
ou the ground during the day. The at
tendance is as yet not so good as the mer
its of the exhibition should have procur
ed, or the excellent Arrangements of the
managers invited. But now that the !
merits of the Fair are so apparent, it is
confidently hoped that the Dumber of vis
itors will largely increase from day to
day.
The greatest number of exhibitors are,
as might have been expected, from coun
ties near Atlonta. The counties above
the Georgia Railroad line Are, ns a general
thing, better represented than thoso bc-
', both in popular attendance and in
variety of their productions and cou-
f tributiousr Your part of the State is still
poorly rep resented, except by the exhibi
tors mentioned yesterday. Yon have no
doubt been advised by dispatches of the
triumph of tbo two Columbus horses,
ll&mcstriny and Spider, in the perform
ances at the speed ring. The Eagle and
Phenix goods are still tho finest and most
admired collection from any factory, and
attract much attention. Miss Fannie
Mitchell, of Harris county, has some pret
ty paintings, which compare favorably
with any on exhibition. As to particular
olijoots on exhibition from other sections
of the Slate, wo must refer you to tho
Atlanta papers, which will roach yon or.
early as this communication.
Tho collections of poultry, cattle and
horses are both large and fiuo, and indi
cate a fast growing interost in pure broods
and improved stock. You would bo sur
prised at the variety and beauty of the
poultry in tho almost innumerable coops.
The Machinery department is not so
attractive, though thero are many imple-
> ments of utility and ingenuity in the
s collection.
The ladies have admirably done their
part towards making tho Fair “a thing of
beauty." Their contributions of artistic
and skillful workmanship and a great va-
iety of good things in the lino of do
lestio economy, prove that the women of
foorgia are uncxoellod in taste and in-
iustry.
The cotton gin establishments are rep-
represented by a number of excellent and
handsome machines, but wo find none
Trotn you city or section, which can cer
tainly boast of excellence in this branch
of industry.
Spider had three competitors in his
yesterday for the purse of $ 175 of
fered by the city of Atlanta. It was a
race for horses that had never trotted in
2:40—mile heats, best throe ia five. Tho
other entries were a Nashville mare called
Lucy, the Savannah horse Faughaballagh
and a gray mare from Augusta. Spider won
in three straight heats, the Augusta gray
beiug second best. Time—fi:0G, 2:55,
2:40$.
Tho attendauoc to-day is largely greater
than that of yesterday, showing increas
ing interest, and giving assurance of the
success of tho exhibition in another point
of view.
Bovoral fire companies, with thoir ap
paratus, have arrived since yestorday, and
their contest will be ouo of the most in
teresting events of tho Fair. ^We regret
that none of your efficient companies are
hero to take part in this rivalry, for we
know that they would hear themselves
nobly in tho contest.
The coutest of tho military companies
commenced to-day, but has not been con
cluded when we write. Tho appearance
of tho companies in fine, and their move
ments soldierly aud skillful. Here, too,
Columbus is unrepresented.
A number of other interesting trials of
speed between noted horses will take
place during tho week, and these exer
cises attract here, as they dd elsewhere,
an interest sometimes amounting to ex
citement. Yours, H*

mouths ago a colored battalion from
Richmond visited tho Capital. The pres
ent visit is in celebration of the aunivor-
sary of the surrender of Comwullis ut
York town.
—The two most gigantic jobs that will
como before tho next session of Congress
aro tho Southern Pacific and tho Northern
Pacific Railroads. Each of these corpora
tions wants from $50,000,000 to $100,-
000,000 to aid them in thoir work, and the
proposition is to transfer to tho Govern
ment all tho property, including tho land
grants of the two companies us security
for tho amount of bonds required, the
Government to guarauteo tho interest and
do everything else to enable the compa
nies to get out of their dilemma. It is
predicted that tho coming session will be
a good one for jobs, owing to the fact that
so many of tho members will be loft out
of the next Congress, and will not bo so
particular about thoir “record.”

ment and tuo Assembly disapprove any
movoment^igaiust Italy.
—It is stated that tho Emperor William
granted au audience to Count Arnim at
Boilzcnburg. This signifies that a crisis
has arrived in the Von Aruim affair, and

marck or tho powerful Arnim family will
provo victors.
REMOVAL OF OFFICE HOLDERS IN THE SOUTH.
Washington, October 22.—It may bo
stated that Austin, Brownsville aud Cal
vert, Texas, postmasters are safe. Jewell
finds nothing tangible against them.
Those at Galveston, Houston aud Dallas
go certainly.
Tho Secretary of tho Treasury will not
say certainly until after consultation with
tho President, hut the indications are,
with one or two exceptions, inoluding the
Collector at Brownsville, that a general
cleAriug out will occur soon.
Some of tho officials of Attorney Gen
eral Williams’hold thoir places by loose
tenure. Tho feeling among the Secreta

duced to place in office persons deficient
