DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1874.
From tho New York Hernld.
Tittt Trouble imd Its Remedy.
American society is suffering a ohnngo.
The period of steady habits h s gone by
and the nge of hifalntin is nt hand. Tho
chief characteristics of the times are an
overestimate of money and an underesti
mate of character. Rough gold has little
value, while highly burnished gilt is great
ly prized. The men are overstimulated
by a huge business without capital, and,
rUct forty, walk on the ragged edge of
apoplexy, while the women are overstim
ulated in the imagination by a corrupt lit
erature which has lowered the moral tone
of the whole community.
Everywhere there exists an iusatiablo
appetite for mere sensationalism. Even
aoieuce and roligiou must startle in order
to attract atleutiou. Plain English does
not satisfy any more than old-fashioned
morality. The old adage which tolls us it
is better to live in a wooden house and
have plenty than to live in a brick house
aud bo pinched, has been turned upside
down and tho preference given to the
brown stone and constant duns.
It is pitiful t > see scienoo in the parti
colored pantaloons of the general folly;
but the scientist of the day, instead of
confining himself to his legitimate sphere,
must neods bring the battering-ram of
his newly discovered facts to bear against
the oaken door of the Church, and pound
away until a crowd gathers to see what
will come of it all. If he narrows his la
bors to glacial thoorios, or to theories of
evolution, ho lives amid the applause of
the few, and dies unknelled, uncoftiued
aud unknown. To escape this terrible
fate he saddles the hobby-horse of induc
tion aud rides rough shod over tho faiths
aud convictions of centuries, sending
dismay into tho camp of the uulearned
and inviting everybody to assemblo quick
ly to witness the explosion and the gen
eral conflagration. Of all men, our sci
entists should cirofully coutiuo them
selves to their several departments of ro-
searoh. It is not thoirs to reckon tho re
ligious consequences of a discovery, but
to make now discoveries. It is tho busi
ness of tho theologian to liiake inductions
from facts ascertained, and thereby to
modify tho religious creeds of tho people.
Tho now school of scunlists, however,
seems determined to leavo tho theologi
ans nothing to do, but assumes tho right
to judge not only tho facts of the phys
ical but tho faiths of tho spiritual world.
It is still more pitiful to note the ten
dency to sensational buffoonery which is
creeping into tho pulpit. If a minister
desires to be popular, aud has the requi
site amount of shrewduoss and brass, he
begins by a display of rhetorical pyro
technics which attracts the common eye,
and holds his own so long as he has
strength and agility to make his audience
laugh ut his picturesque gymnastics, bo
morbid has tho taste of tho people be
come that they actually require a large
amount of spiritual buncombe in order to
keep up their interest. Plain Scripture
seems to be flat, stale aud unprofitable,
aud they demand tho pepper aud salt of
eccentric phrasoology, and seem to he
most delighted when tho preacher is most
a ranting aotor, tearing the air with fran
tic gesticulations and malting sport of
things nforetimo held sacred. Crowds
wait on the ministrations of tho clerical
comedian who burlesques religion, while
the pews of the revoroud expounder of
Holy Writ remain empty and unrented.
Sober-minded men sooner or later become
disgusted with tho genorul farco; but
while looking upon the current methods
of dealing with r. ligion as the equivalent
of the counterfeit currency that is afloat
feel powerless against tho strong tide of
public opinion.
The trouble bogins with American ed
ucation aud homes. School girl-*, who
should confine their attention to short
clothes and arithmetic, are fed with the
exciting pabulum ot' a false literature, and
are uncousoiously stimulated by n style of
novel which undermines tho moral nature
by unduly heating tho imagination. The
fiction of the day hides under cover of an
interesting story thooiios of domestic lifo
which liouoconib society,aud these theories
are absorbed into the moral nature of the
young to such an extent that wo are al
most daily compelled to record extrava
gances which show that the common
sense of the community is on tho ebb.
Homo education is entirely neglected, and
that delicate sense of honor wliicli should
ho ns bright and ns dangerous to touch
rudely as tho edge of a razor, is giving
way to a certain waywardness and reck-
lesmess, the logical result of which will
he ill assorted marriages, domestic un
happiness and a crop of divorces twen
ty years from date. All ehivalric rela
tions between tho sexes are fast lading
out, imil American society is being given
over to the control of boys and girls in
their toons. They are tho false queens
and kuiglits of tho chessboard, while am
bitions mammas me convenient pawns,
occupying a positiou in the background,
and never appearing unless eallod for.
Every one knows that this political, so
cial and moral bankruptcy comes from the
want of early training, nnd history is not
backward in illustrating tho consequences
of general corruption. There is an inevi
table logic in the life of n people, as in the
life of an individual. Wo must got down
on the hardpan of honorable manhood
and pure womanhood or wo shall moot tho
fate which has overtaken nations that
were stronger than wo arc. This sickly
sentimentalism in religion nnd this social
namby pnmbyism rnunt bo exorcised by a
docent literatnvo and by a pulpit that
dares to bo honost aud simple, boforo our
girls will make good wives or our boys
houorablo merchants.
