DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1874. A Well-to-do Farmer and Happy No* frow. A correspondent gives as the following account of what he has seen in Talbot county. What n prosperous and happy section tho South would be to-day, if all its farms were managed as judiciously and all its laborers as contented and in dustrious : I stopped last night with a planter in Talbot county who runs a five mule farm. Without imported fertilizers ho has raised 1,200 bushels of corn, Silo bushels of wheat, has two acres in potatoes, not yet dug, oats, rye, barley and peas bountifully. Thoy were making cane syrup; said thoy would make two barrels or more; had 22 pork hogs up fattening, which will aver age 200 pounds. Ho has made about seventeen bags of cotton—crop a little abort. His freedmen were his servants in slave times. They refuse to leave him. They havo settlements round on his land—have cows and hogs, and vegetable patches, make their own syrup, and live well. Last hut not least, the gentleman wears a nice sort of mixed jeans, cut and made by his wife, and when we came to tho table—Good-bye, all cotton! —fat beef steak, largo si ces of fried ham and gravy, biscuit, butter, eggs, coffeo, syrup, waf fles, &c. The Hog and Corn Crops. Reports from two hundred and fourtcon points in Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio and Indiana, tho great corn and hog producing states, seem to confirm opinions previously published, indicating a decrease in hogs and a fair- crop of corn. In tho majority of in stances tho number of hogs reported is considerably less than at this time last year, as confirmed by the official reports of the several State auditors. There is but little doubt us to there beiug fewer hogs iu the country than at this time last soauon. In almost all soctions of the country hogs are reported iu poor condi tion, owing to the scarcity of old corn. In Canada, it is also said there will bo a slight falling off iu tho number. The corn crop, according to latest esti mates, will bo a fair one, but ns there is very little of last year’s corn uow on baud, amt as tho market price is fully 100 per cont. higher than in 1873, it Beems pro bable that tho farmers will sell their hogs early in tho season, in order to realize a better value for tho corn. Last year the price of hogs at Chicago rouged from $3.50 to $4 on the 1st of No- vemher, to $4,024 to $5.75 at tho close of February, and tho result was a safe price for product at which shippers early, aud speculators late, took hold free. This year, however, wo shall doubtless com mence packing at much higher rates, and ns the country is bare of stock, tho new crop will doubtless be largely drawn upon to supply the immediate necessities of trade, both home and foreigu. Summer curing lias been more extensively carried on this season than ever before, aud es pecially iu tho West, und the product has generally given much butter satisfaction than winter cured stocks. Owing to the ac.ircity of winter meats, tho Southern trade has taken tho ieo-curcd to a larger extent than usual, while thero has also been a largo amount of old and damagod bacon roshipped from Liverpool and sent South, which has completely cleared both Europe and America of old crop. Long clour was at first tho only cut inquired for, but of lato Staffordshire, Cmuberlauds and St rat fords have boon in dotnand. This shows conclusively that tho num ber of hogs cut during the summor lias been greater thou lost year, and that tho balance left since tho returns of the Government Statistical Bureau’s report was made np is less iu propoition than for last year or for former years. So far statistics enable us to judge of tho course of the future market; but, as we have often remarked before, statistics nro getting, year l>y your, to bo loss relied upon by the mercantile community, be cause they have so often and almost inva riably foiled them of late years. No stronger illustration of this fact is needed than i ho statistical position of the provi sions market a year ago, which unmistak ably pointed to low, or at least not to high prices. This was accepted by the trade generally early in tho season to be the situation, and yet speculators took hold of tho whole crop later and carried it suc cessfully through at the highest point known for years. And no one seems yet able to account fully for this apparently anomalous condition of affairs. Clenrly, statistics failed. The causes of these changes are in constantly changing cur rents of trade and different modes of bus iness, to which must bo added the specu lative or non-spoculative disposition of tho trade itself during different periods. In views of these facts, tho provisions trade are standing aloof, and the question of future prices is as doubtful as ever.— New York Commercial Bulletin. A DiHconrngcd Correspondent. The Tribune's special New Orlcaus cor respondent complains as follows, under date of the 13th inst.: I am growing discouraged. When I came lo Louisiana stories of outrages, intimidation and terrorism iu tho Gulf States were pouring into the office of tho Attorney Goneral at ft rate which led mo to think that before the day of election there would bo few colored Republicans left lo tell tho tale. Nearly four weeks havo passed, and I am still patiently waiting for mutorial for nt leust one letter to bo devoted to this exciting subjoot. My valise has been packed to go with mo at a moment’s notice to any part of the State where the whippings, tho a&sassi- natious and tho massacres may be re ported iu progress, aud, in order that nothing of tho sort might escape me, I havo hauntod the newspupor offices by day and by night, and vigorously ques tioned and cross-questioned every citizen arriving from “up tha river,” “down the river,'’ “the lied river country,” “the Techo,” or any other s ction reported by Kellogg to be in n bail way. But nil in vain. The outrages are not forthcoming ; and yet tho period of my sojourn in Lou- . isiana has been one of the most eventful and exciting in its decidedly eventful and exciting history. Ucn Banks on LoiilNinun. Gen. Banks addressed the pooplo of Bunker Ilill District on the 21st, upon public questions. We quote from the Globes report of his speech tho following allusion to Louisiana: Louisiana is in tho hands of a govern- mont that has not a shadow of right, there is no order and no help from tho courts of justice; the public money is squandered and tho public treasury is plundered; the State is blistered with debts and heavy taxation, and nothing is left but repudiation. And yet wo are told that if wo change those things wo shall be ousted from power and see again a recurrence of our old troubles. Thero can bo no such thing as prosperity when half tho States of the Union are in disorder and a state of quasi rebellion; half of us cannot ro* main iu beggary while the other half roll in wealth; there must be a union of in terest, and then tho welfare and prosperi ty of the country will be assured. These pooplo demand an honorable government, und Congress must give it them as far as it lies iu the power of Congress to do so. In speaking of tho finances of the coun try, he said that while tho valuation of property had been increased but one-half, taxation hud increased four hundred per cent. CLOTHING.
