DEMOCRATIC MEETING IA GI
RARD.
ABLE RPirXIIF.fi BY HON. DAVID CLOPTON AND
M. BALDWIN, EHQ.
The Girad Academy was woll filled last
night with both ladies nnd gentlemen,
anxious to hear tho addresses on the po
litical situation by Hon. David Clopton
M. A. Baldwin, Esq., of Montgomery.
Ulysses Lewis, Esq , of Seale, wav call
ed to tho chair, and iu a few appropriate
remarks introduced M. A. Baldwin, Esq.,
of Montgomery, who, though quite
youtig, proved equal to the occasion, and
favored his heurers with n clear and forci
ble address of half*an hour's length. lie
commenced by speaking of the tendency
the Government to centralization;
next preceded to consider the condition
of Alabama, in her subjection to Radical
tyranny nnd corruption, ami to urge an
honest nnd earnest effort on tho part of
tho Democrats to redeem her in the pres
ent crisis. lie approved that plank of the
Democratic platform whicli recognizes
tho necessity of it white man's govern
ment, comparing briefly countries where
white supremacy prevails to the degraded
condition of countries ruled by nogroes.
lie also touched upon civil rights, gov
ernmental usurpation, and other points
of interest in tho present canvass. The
effort was very creditable.
lion. David Clopton was next called
out, and delivered himself, ns on the pre
vious evening in Browncville, of n very
able and stirring address, covering all tho
great questions of the day. It was en
thusiastically received.

Radical a Claying a High Game.
Messrs. Boykin Jones, Ohlploy, Trny-
wiok nnd others, in Bussell county, have
had much cotton stolen from them of
late. The other day they had some no-
groos arrested under a possessory war
rant, who hud some cotton taken from
their places. Homo of tho darkies went
to Opelika, made complaint thoro, and re
turned with an escort of l>. S. Marshals.
To prevent arrest and being tarried n
long way from borne for trial, the young
men oatue to Georgia. How long is thin
thing to last—this intimidation of whito
people? They can stop it hy going to tho
polls next Tnosduy and outvoting the
Radicals. Lot not n white man he fright

Ktnte, Alabama will be redeemed, and
radicalism bo dead forevor. Then will
Alabama become a laud of freedom, law,

Tuesday's Race at Atlanta.
The Atlanta pajiere give us the details
of tho race on Tuesday. The Hews states
that on account of the withdrawal of Basil
Duke, the purse was reduced from #500
to #250. The other papers say nothing of
this. It was said Basil Duke’s legs were
still too weak to run. The first horse was
to receive the purse, #250, and tho gate
money less 20 per cent , which was to go
to the second horse. The betting was all
ou Hpidcr by two to one. Lucy went beg-
ging. Spider, of Columbus, grey horse
from Nanhvillo, and Ralston’s Lucy, of
Macon, were entered. Judges were—Jos.
Cotton, umpire, R. J. Godfrey and A. J.
Smith, with II. G. Klink, timer, and Clint
Clay, starter. Tho grey more won tho
inside, Hpider second, Lucy third. From
the start Spider behaved badly, breaking
constantly. Lucy trotted honestly, aud
won the heat iu 2:40, Hpidcr second on a
sudden spurt, and the gray horse third.
Lucy was so far aboad on the home
stretch that she came iu almost in a walk.
Second Heat—The Constitution says
the people began to “smell a rat” and
Spider wan not such a favorite os before.
He canto in lust, breaking as boforc. The
grey pushed Lucy. Time 2:40.
Third Heat—Lucy won in 2:41$, gruy
second, Spider third. No betting on Spi
der though tremendous odds wero offered.
The News nays no time was taken as tho
judges did not desire it published. The
Herald and Constitution givo it os wo have
stated. The papers allego knowing ones
know how the race would be, and little
money changed hands. Homo of Spider’s
friomls gave ns an excuse for his poor per
formance that ho whs stiff and Rore from
his hard oxercitm during fair week. Tho
Herald speaks of the strong probability
of uuother taco between Spider and Lucy,
and also a contest between Spider and
Basil Duke.

Growing Places Over tho River.
Porhaps no placo iu Alabama has grown
faster during tho past two or three years
than Browhevillo, or Marshall, ns some of
its friends aro wont to term it, opposite
this city in Leo and Russell counties.
This comprises tho manufacturing village
of the Engle nnd Phonix mills. Thoro is
no denying tho fact that n rapidly grow
ing town has almost suddenly sprung up
oi* tho Alabama side in tho vicinity of tho
western end of the upper bridge. Tho
total population of Girard, Marshall and
Browncville is put down nt 4,000. In
Marshall, or Browncville, there are about
fifteen or twenty stores, oflicos and work
shops, two hnndsomo churches and hun
dreds of residences. Au observer esti
mates that 2,000 persons, irrospostive of
citizens, daily pass nnd repass through
tho principal stroet of tho placo. A con
siderable proportion of tho monthly #25,-
000 paid out by the Columbus factories
finds ^s way into tho tills of Marshall
merchants, hut this money also directly
benefits Columbus merchants, as most of
* t ho small dealers of Marshall procure
their stocks here. Tho population is all
of tho producing class and tends to build
up tho wnterual wealth of this city nml

From eighty-eight replies from forty
more counties in Georgia, (ho Bivannah
Cotton Exchange, up to Ootober 24th,
learns the following information :
Frost appeared all over the State, ex
cepting the extreme southern portions, on
the nights of the 12th, 13th and 14th
in->t., hut only in tho extreme northern
portion was serious injury reported to be
general. In Middle Georgia the injury
was confined to the lowlands—the vital
ity of the plant on uplands having beeu
previously destroyed.
The weather has been very favorable
for gathering the crops since Soptembor
20th.
Half to threo-fourths of the crop is
picked out, and picking expected to he
entirely over from 1st of November to
1st of December. Both tho qaantity
picked, aud tho time when picking frill
cease—depending on locality—tho South
ern section being tho most favored, and
the Northern most backward.
Compared with last your, in Southern
Georgia, an increased yield is cxpocted
of about ten per cent. In Middle and
Upper Georgia there will be a decrease,
estimated iu the former at ton to fiftoon
percent., nnd twenty per cent, in the
latter.
Weather can uow only affect the quality
of the cotton. Thus far tho picking has
been free from dirt, and planters aro forc
ing the staple to market more generally
than ever known before.
Tho Augusta Exchange reports sixty-
five replies from thirty two conntieB,which
in substance, is as follows. Tho report
reaches also to October 24th :
In tho uplands of the middle belt no
damago has boon done by frost; in the
northern belt, lowlands havo suffered se
rious injury, uplands slight.
Weather, since September 20ih, has
been very favorable.
By average, 51 per cent, of the crop
has boon picked, and picking will be
finished by November 20th.
Compared with last year, the yield
three counties will show a doorcase of 50
per cent.; in thirteen counties 33 per
cent. ; in cloven comities 25 per cent. ;
nml in five counties from 10 to 20 per
cent.
The crop thus far gathcrod is peculiarly
free from dirt and trash, and has gener
ally been sold so soon as ready for market.
FLORIDA.
Twenty-seven replios from sixteen coun
ties to October 24th:
No damage from frost. Weather very

thirds of tho crop gathered. Picking will
cense November 20th. In son island dis
trict yield will be about Rume as Inst yeur,
many hnving abandoned tho culture of
tho long staplo. One upland county re
ports n decreased yi jld compared with last
year, the remainder an increase of 25 per
cent.
Tho top crop has been partly ent off,
excopt iu lowland*, from not having rain
to maturo tlio young bolls. Picking, gin
ning and sending forward tho crop, has
boon pusfled to the fullest extent.
