d 7 DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1874. t i. T —— THE FIRE FIEND IN THE WERT. OPELIKA DIRECTORY. rUOGREdS OF THE FLAMES IN OHIO, INDIANA AND KENTUCKY — MILLIONS OF PROPERTY DESTROYED. Cincinnati, October 30.—Acoounts of disastrous tiros in the forests of Ohio, In diana and Kentucky tte accumulating here, some of them alarming in charac ter, owing to the propinquity of towns and villages to the scenes of conflagra tion. The origin of the Area ia unknown; but aftor the protracted season of drought which has turned the enormous leaf fall iuto vast beds of tinder and the dry con dition of the timber, it is easily seen that the sparks from a locomotivo or the Ruiouldering auhea of a camp fire in the woods, scattered by the autumnal wind, would be sufficient to ignite the continu ous acres of dry dead leaves wherever woods abound. At Creatline, Ohio, great alarm was felt yesterday lest tho fire from tho woods on the west would cross the corporation line and communicate with tho town, as a high wind was prevailing ami blowing the name9 in that direction. The citizens remained ap all night and fought the flames, whioh they at last got uuder control by felling immense ' quantities of timber. Great excitement prevailed in Logan, Ohio, for fear tho forest tiros would destroy tho place. At New Lexington, Ohio, tho campmoeting buildings were destroyed by a forest Are that almost enveloped the plaoe, but for- tunately conld not approach nearer than two miles for want of fuel; but at last accounts several habitations scattered through tho country were threatened with destruction. At Cambridge, Ohio, the fc, woods are burning fiercely in four differ ent places and threaten to destroy tbo trestle-work of the railroad. At Dodson, Ohio, the sparks from a passenger train ignited a pile of wood yesterday, and the wind drove the flames through the woods, . and evon fields, destroying a large quau- t lily of cord wood, many valuable fences i and iuuueuse quantities of harvested corn f belonging to J. Foster. Another citizen of tho placo, George lteed, also lost his corn harvest, llis dwelling and outbuild ings were only saved by the united efforts of tho neighborhood. The region of Kenton, O., was also swept by a forest fire that destroyed largo quantities of corn, fences and farm buildiugs. At I ronton, Ohio, the forest Area have destroyed immense quantities of valuable timber. This is the iron region of Southern Ohio. nud-tUe loss is serious, on account of cutting short tho timber intended for making charcoal for tho manufacture of iron. Al Itelle Fountain, Ohio, the farm hoiiso, outbnddiugs and entire crop of wheat of Mr. John Horn wore completely destroyed, the forest fires having commu nicated by beds of fallen leaves, which the wind swept along t ie gronud like a t train of gunpowder. The 1 ss is #40,000. ' Tho citizens of Geneva, Ohio, near Cleveland, havo turned out ea masse to light the forest fires. Home residences were consumed, but no loss of life is reoorded. Tho account from Russell, Ky., is sorious. The forests are on fire around Russell and the Amanda iron fur naces for an area of four miles, aud it is feared that t xteusivo damage will be sus tained unless tha wind should chango or heavy ra u ensue. A REIGN OF TERROR is reported from Munice, Ind., and Fort Wayne, Ind , on nccouut of forost fires which have been raging for two days past. The woods have been on fire in places for several weeks past, but high vynds havo fanned the flames into a flreo- ness that caused tho largest timbers to fall heforo them like dried corn stulks. Nearly two thousand acro.s of fine forost timber havo already beeu consumed, and the flames are stilt progressing through tho douse woods, with stiff autumnal breozes stimulating them into destructive action. A thousand cords of firewood havo been consumed. Alarm is felt that Rushville, Ind., will bo cousmncd by fire from tho surronnding woods. This account could be indefi nitely extended, l.nt in order to show tho ext out and dauger of forest fires prevail ing in this section of the country only the most prominent and best known points havo been mentioned. A. O. Harwell having withdrawn from the firm of Harwell, Griffin A Co., has removed to Chambers street.
