They wero the solo talk of yesterday. The one for Congress in Columbus passed off very quietly. Men would go down in groups of two or three, deposit their bal lots, and at once leave. Not a man re mained around the pjlla. There was no opposition to the Democratic candidate, and hence the indifference. The eutire vote is a majority for our candidate. If this bo kept up over the district, his ma jority must bo over ten thousand at a low estimate. The entire interest of tho city was centered iu the Alabama elections. Many of our pooplo took an active part in elec tioneering both iu Browneville audGirurd —though not one attempted to poll a vote. The impression ut this writing is that both Bussell aud Leo counties have gone Democratic by good majorities. Tho majority iu Girard against the Democrats has been greatly decreased. Willi the exception of a little flurry about 12 o’clock, over an alleged attempt of a Georgia negro to vote, the election in Girard passed off quietly. The Uads concentrated there in heavy force, and under the leadership of l’oShatn, voted iu solid phalanx up to twelve o’clock. After that hour tho Democrats rallied and worked like beavers tin til tho close of tho polls. There wero 1, 372 votes pollotl. It was impossible to obtain the count last night, but tho Ends olaim tho box by between 300 and 400 majority. As the ltadical tickets wero considerably split up on county officers, it is confidently believed tho Democrats have oloctod their whole county ticket, ami probably obtained a majority for some of their State officers. Majority for the Democrats All houor to such people! —No Mayor's Court yesterday. —Plenty of frost and thin ioe yester day. —A wife's secret is her opinion of her husband. —The weather yesterday was clear and very dry. —An era unknown to women in the middle ages. —Polite: “Plea*#, Hir, if you’ll get off iny corn long enough I’ll kick you!” — Four beeves at auction yesterday brought #9 50 each. —The genius has yet to be born who is to invent a practical substitnte for work. —An exchange mourns the good old times when slang was never slung. “Slipped his grip’’ is tho latest syno nym for “passed in his checks.” —The election yesterday on this side of the river was quiet as a graveyard on Monday morning. There wasn’t a bit of fun. Alabama consumed all the interest. When a man dies and leaves a nice young widow with plenty of money, and you see her walking out with the execu tor Sunday afternoon, change is immi nent, —The voi ingof negroes yesterday great ly interfered with the receipts of cotton. Many of them walkod twenty-five miles to ballot, and had no idea of what even they were voting for. They were well drilled hy the Rads. —Thousands of negroes crossed the lower bridge on their way to Girard yes terday. There was a black stream con stantly over tho structure.
