TBS BWOBN IlRTUHXS OF MKRCQANTS FOR THU SEASON'S OF 1872-’3 AND 1873-’4 — LA ROE DECREASE LAST YEAR—PROYKS TUB PEOPLE UAV £ LIVED CLOSER, AND FEW ADVANCES HAVE BEEN MADE. At onr request, Mr. M. M. Moore, Clerk of Council, one of tho most thorough, courteous aud competent officers that ever a city possessed, has kindly prepared for u* the following tables, which show tho business of Columbus merchants aud man ufactories for tho past two seasons from August 31st to October 31st. The city requires tho gross sales to be returned quarterly ou oath in order to be taxed on them. Wo really think some of tho re ported sales, merchants would hardly be willing to go to the public, uuloss they had au opportunity to increaso the figures. The total shows a decrease of $081,341 of last year from tho previous season. Every branch of trade shows a less amount except manufactured and woolen goods, which have gained $9,078. Even fire insurance manifests a heavy decline. Including insurance and livery H’ulile receipts, the total busiuess reported is $4,f»20.(M»G for 1872-3 and $3,812,022 for I873-’4 ; excess of former $708,041. There are good reasons for this decline and every city must' show a corresponding one whoso returns are reported fairly. The panic of last fall produced the great est depression. Tho people have not yet recovered from it. lUauters wore in debt for supplies to raise cottou which brought low prices. The consequence, all com- tneuced living more economically, obtain ing ns little advances as possible—houco business was dull and transactions re duced. A mure trying year has novel been known. Tho farmers now have plenty of coil and cotton aud the future is promising. Under tho heading of hardware is in cluded the sales of the Columbus Iron Works, which cover about half amount reported. Including all classes, tho sales of Columbus manufactories and mills, reach over one and a half million dollars annually.
