Mr. G. O. Merriwether is Superinten
dent of ibis division of the Western
Union Telegraph Company, with head-
quarters at Mobile. He left home laat
Wednesday, on a tour of iospeotioQ,
leaving his family perfectly well. Arriving
here yesterday morning, he received
telegraphio intelligence from bia home
that a four-year old daughter, said to be a
beautiful child, was unwell. Another
meeaege, received some time after, stated
she wee better. In the afternoon Super
intendent Meriwether was at the key,
when Mobile called Coiambus, the former
supporting as operator in oar office wes at
the instrument. Hardly had the wires
clicked off a few words before Mr. M. ut
tered a cry and fell back almost fainting.
In a little while after, Mr. M. became
more calm. Mr. O. G. Harrell, who is
manager of the Colombns office, received
the message, which was one to him re
questing him to break delicately as pos
sible the intelligence to Mr. Merriwether
thet his child had jnst died. The sadden
shock to the father's heart can be imagined
only by those who have reoeived similar
messages—so unlookml for, ro unexpected
ns to strain to their utmost tension every
fibre of tho heart. Mr. M. was totally
unmanned by the terrible blow. He had
bought a gift for her in Macon, and wan
expecting a joyous meeting with the little
one. He left on tbo first train for
Mobile.

Diver Cotton.
Thus far, this senson, the boats have
brought to Columbus 3,370 bales of cot-
tou, against 1,948 same time last year,
showing a gain of 1,422. Wo have now
received within one thonsaud bales of
half as much as tho stoamers brought to
our wharf the whole of last season—8,415
balos. At the same rates, we ought to got
over 15,000 bales from rivor plantation
thin year. Business from this source has
boon constantly increasing for a number
of seasons. Thus in 1871 -’2 Columbus
warehoused from the river 4,909 bales;
1872-M — 6,898 bales; 1873-’4 — 8,415
bales. When the stream is improved, as
is being now done, our city should con
trol the entire trade of the Chattahoochee
and Apalachicola, mud to some extent the
Flint river.

Woman*s Chances of Marriage.
The fair sex are greatly interested in
this subject, so we will give them the
probabilities as analyzed from the stat
istics of England. Supposing the sum of
a woman's chancos to be oue hundred,
she exhausts fourteen and a half of them
between the ages of fifteen and twenty
years, and after the twenty-fifth birth day
fifty-two more have gono np. Theu she
has only thirty-three chances in a hnn
dred. Just think of it. Two-thirds of
the matrimonial prospects vanished in
twenty-five years. She will turn thirty
with only fifteen and a half chances left
After thirty.flve olovou and ono-half
chances remain—a dim possibility,
sixty a female need not despair, for she
has the tenth of a ehanoe at a husband,
bat that soon becomes exhausted. Every
woman wants to get married. HappiLoss
is not counted in tho above estimate.
Thousands wish themselves outside shortly
after they have entered tho state of matri
mony.

The ghastly record of deaths that
result irom pulmonary affections Is frightful.
Thero Is no disease that is so lnslduoss In Its
attack as consumption. By the neglect of
slight colds" they soon become deep seated
and de'y ren.edles which, if applied at the out
set, would have averted all danger.
Tutt’s Expectorant has proven Itself the
most valuable Lung Balsam over
