A Texan Raid on the New Bishop, Tho Texas delegation yesterday made a formal cull on tbo newly consecrated Bishop of West Texas. The party was introduced by Lieut. Governor Hubbard, who congratulated the Bishop in the natno of his Stato on his elevatiou to the Epis copacy, and promised that every Tegan would give him a hearty welcome—that wherever he traveled ho would find the latch striug of ovory Texas cabin hanging out. The Bishop on his part promises to give the string a vigorous pull. Facitously alluding to a remark made by Bishop Wilmer, m which Texas was spoken of as a far off wilderness, Hub bard remarked, tbat Texas was not such a wilderness as might have been sup posed. The party had come from a city a few thousands larger than Atlanta, in a Pull- iuuu oar, and wore accustomed to enjoy all tbe liveliness that civilized man ought to enjoy. As for being n wilderness, Col. Rich ardson was his authority for saying that tho only wilderness they saw was this side tho lone Star StAte. He bade the Bisbop fight tbo devil os vigorously in Texas as he hAd fought him in Georgia. “I am eulisted for the whole of that war,” quoth the Bishop, “and if yon will be my first recruit I shall have no difficul ty with the balance.” “Oh,” retorted the witty Governor, you would place mo with tbe infantry l” “No,” I would place you with the ar tillery, and I he heavy at that, being a big gun you would make n first rate ecclesias tical canon. Thus the joke went round. The Bishops complimented the Texans on tho bravery they displayed in the war ; if they would fight tbo devil as they fought Gail MARKET*. BY TELEGRAPH TO ENRVIBEB. An old drinking saloon was Hwept out and ar ranged for Epincopal worship. Now it so happened that tho boys had a habit of placing their worn onfc cards on a board overhead. Just as he was taking hi* text a gust of wind threw down an aoe of heart*, face up, on the open Bible. “Thero,” exclaimed one of the company, “Parson you have got the devil this pop. He throws np his hand already.” To keep the round of jest moving, the Bishop related au incident that happened to one of the clergy who wore his sur plice, and preached from a written ser mon. A frontiersman who hoard him re marked that he did not like a man who wore a petticoat And Hbot from a rest. “I want yon to understand,” said the. yonng prel ate, “that I can preach without tho petti coats, or shoot without a rest.” The whole interview was informal and offhanded.
