Major A. li. Calhoun, Proprietor and Editor of Enquirer: I notico in to-day's issue of your paper a notice of ihe “Workingmen’s” meeting of Thursday evening last. I sec no reason why it should not have boon reported in duo oourse of yester morning; but as to that, it matters uot to me. What I have to say in the matter is of the reported remarks about myself. Tho reporter states 1 com plained of tho public schools. I suppose he moans of this city. If so, he states what is false, us I stated uttho commence ment of my talk that / teas in favor of public schools, lie states further that I personally object to tho principal of those schools. That is also false. As to tho sal ary paid to any persi>n at the rute of $1,800 per year, or any othor smu, as separate from extra compensation for ser vices reudored as Superintendent to tho Head Master or Teacher of the Grammar or High School, or whatever name it may bo oalled, I did object. And although tho writer of the notice says, “Wo know the workingmen do uot eudorse (his, or his remarks in geueral,” in answer to which I beg to inform the said writer of what hundreds of citizons of Columbus do not oudorso, who are both workingmen, mer chants and professional men : They do uot endorse a self-made board of trustees to disburse publio mouoy to tho amount paid in this oity. 2. They do not endorse the paymont of $1,800 to any one as Superintendent of Publio Schools. They do not endorse tho filthy condition in which the Public School for oolorod children is allowed to be kept. Boiug of opinion that it is well to teach cleanliness, carufuluoss, and other proper methods of conduct to the colored-classes, as woll as the book knowledge that may bo atlaiued in such schools by thorn. The amounts (I was informed by the city Treasurer) paid last year for Public School purposes in tho city of Columbus, was $9,100. Amount received from the State, $1,020.55— leaving this amount to be paid from tho city tuxes, $7,479.45. The wholo amount of tho statement I made before tho mooting referred to iu this note is, that out of the abovo there is tile sum of $1,300 uselessly giveu away for services not rendered. Respectfully, John Affleyaud. A Matter of Gladness• The reporter who gave an account of that mootiug Thursday, . was uever more amused thau when roadiug the card of Mr. Appleyard. It is exceedingly far cical tho id«a of f.o mauy men la boring under a false impression. All are exceeding rojoicod to kuow that Mr. Appleyard favors our Pub lio Schools and does not object per sonally to Superintendent Dews. What were all thoso words about bad grammar, Ac., for ? The reporter is able to answer only one of tho connuudruius pro pounded. Tho acconut of the meeting was not published Thursday hooause no paper wns published nt thiH office on Thnuksgiviug Day. With tho oilier things, tho “ifs,” &c., tho roporter has nothing to do. He ib ho rejoiced to kuow that tho schools huve a valuable supporter, that laughter wells from tho bottom of his heart. The world will now luovo on as before. If Alcoholic Stimulants nro taken into the blood tho lieurt works faster, aud this uunnhiral speed wears out the vital machinery.
