Aa the 1 r.x train waa apptoaohiog
tbe city Thursday, two flat can loaded
with thirty-aix balsa of ootton ware dis
covered to be on lire, having caught from
an angina apark. This happened, though
tbe usual care of having four watchmen
on a oar wae observed. These cars were
at once detached, and the cotton thrown
off in a branoh in Cook'a field. Tbe acci
dent happened between Beallwood atation
and Golnmbaa. Examination revealed
that fifteen baiee were bedly, end twenty-
one Blightly burned. On tbe whole Irein
were 86 bales. Only that mentioned waa
injured.
Had the ootton not been bonnd in iron
ties all won'd have been destroyed. Of
the fifteen bales most of the baggiag was
burned off, and considerable loss was oc
casioned by palling ont fragments where
fire waa discovared. We learn that ail
has been brought to the depot.
Tbe bales injured belonged to the fol
lowing parties in Harria eonnty. The
name in braokets ia that of the consignee:
M. C. Farley A Co., 1 bale, consigned to
Alabama warehouse; Cowzette A Kim
brough [Planters] 2; J. W. Btory [A.
Clegg A Co.] 2; R. Taylor [Alabama] 3;
Mrs. H. Farley fi—[2 Fontaine, 3 Gran
gers']; Mrs. M. F. Jones [Lowell] 2; D.
N. Mullens [Fontaine] 2; T. M. Bparks
[Planters'] 8; H. E. Brooks [Fontaine] 4;
W. 8. Webster [Fontaine] 2; J. D. Robin
son [Alabama] 1; H. D. Mullins [Fon
taiue] 4.
On the slightly burned bales the loss is
trifling; on Iho.badly burned ones it is
one-third to one-half.
It is strange that Sparks' cotton shonld
be fired by eparke, isn't it?

That given last evening by the City
Light Guards was both successful and de
lightfu 1 . The members were out iu their
beautiful uniforms, and a Urge number of
fair ladies were present to admire them
and the wearers, and have a joyous dance
to the sweet music of Davies. Lovely
maidens always adore the military.
The hall was adorned with pictures and
brilliantly lighted. The scene waa a very
rich and pleasant one. Tbe blue and red
