CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
REGULAR MONTHLY MEETIKO LASX NIGHT.
The regular monthly meeting of this
body waa held last night. The attendance
was not very large, though several of the
leading business man of the dty wave
present.
Minntes of last meeting were read and
confirmed.
The Committee on Insurance waa grant
ed further time to report.
G. Gunby Jordan, from the committee
on North and South Road, reported that
the committee had had an interview with
Governor Smith, that various plans had
been discussed for the relief of the road,
aud the security of the city’s interest
therein, but that nothing definite had
yet been agreed upon. After some dis
cussion, participated in by Messrs. Jor
dan, Boat rite, and Nuckolls, it was re
solved to continue the committee as a
standing one to look after tho interest of
the city in the road.
Major Allen, from the committee ap
pointed to attend the Direct Trade Con
vention at Atlanta, related briefly the sub
jects discussed by that Convention, and
mentioned that Col. Tift had made ar
rangements for the establishment of a
line via New York, by which it is believed
tho cotton States will be largely benefited.
Some talk followed on this subject
which did not reflect any great amount of
enthusiasm on the Direct Trade move
ment.
A lengthy and interesting debate sprung
up on the subject of freights and trans
portation, during which were pointed out
the advantages and disadvantages of Co
lumbus business men, and suggestions
made as to the necessary measures of re
lief. In this connection the Prosdont was
instructed to appoint a committee of five,
of which he bimsolf should be chairman,
representing tho varied mercantile inter
ests of the city, to use their best endeav
ors to effect a remedy for existing griev
ances. The committee will be appointed
at tho leisure of tho President.
All subjocts discussed were of a highly
interesting nature, and showed that our
business mou are at last opening their
eyes to thoir condition, and are determin
od to work earnestly to promote the inter
ests of the city.
The meetings of the Chamber should
be more largely attended.
The Board then adjourned to next regu
lar meeting.
Reetored,
Captain John Foran and offioer Tom
MoEaehern,suspended Tuesday,have been
restored to the police fore. We hope our
officers havo learnod a lesson and will ab
stain from farther canvassing, from enter
ing bar rooms with uniforms on, and
oboy the ordinances of the city. Of
several of onr officers not the least com
plain, has been made. Of* others, the
remark is made, the regulations are hourly
violated, espesially at night. On the eve
of an election it is most important that
our police force should be governed by
the striotest discipline that order may be
preserved, and citizens who pay their
salaries may be protected. We mean this
only for those who transgress tho regula
tions, and wo trait that captains and pri
vates will hereafter do their duty.

Judge• Johnson’s Charge — Timely Re
marks,
In sentencing a colored man yesterday
to tho penitentiary for ten years, Judge
Johnson took occasion to give the ne
groes, of whom there were many iff the
Court House, some Rood advioe. The
main idea advanced was that for the pro
tection of themselves aud Bociety they
must condemn crime and criminals.
When they knew of a crime committed,
they should reveal the fact to the
authorities, that the offenders against
ths laws may be tried before the oourts,
Haviug knowledge of a violator of the
law, and keeping it concealed, makes the
party as guilty as the principal. The con
tinuation of thioving waa haviug the ef
fect of keeping capital away from the
land, and the honest peoplo of the whole
country, white aud black, could endure it
no longer.
We do not pretend to give his remarks,
nor all his ideas, but simply the sub
stance. The remarks, visibly, had a good
effect.
LOCAL BRIEFS.
-The Missionary Sunday School Soci
ety of St. Luke M. E. Church holds, its
annual meeting on Sunday.
—The storm predicted by the spirits on
yesterday was a fraud. None came, save
from a wife to a husband who returned
early in the morning, under the weather.
—French chemists have discovered a
process of extracting the purest vanilla
from rosin. Hence vanilla is to be as
cheap as rosin in a short time.
—The two Coinmbus bridges over the
Chattahoochee river are kept insured by
the City Council of Columbus. We be
lieve the running insurance is $15,000 to
$20,000.
—Mayor Cleghom bai determined that
the policemen shall not become active can
vassers in municipal contests, and thus
tend to to promote disorders. In every
auspenruon for this offence he will gain
popularity from tax payers, who psy the
salaries of policemen that these officers
may maintain order in the city,
j l—“A violent rush of ooek-tail to the
head” is the polite way of describing a
first-class drunk now-a-days.
—A diamond merchant baa sold in Co
lumbus iu the last three days about on*
thousand dollars worth of gems.
—A very lazy man of this city in ad
dressing notes to his wife commences with
“Dr yf.”
—The brass band of the Maas troupe
serenaded tho town yesterday morning,
liodo in a wagon. Good musio.
—Farmers claim that with an average
season more cotton can be raised per acre
in North than in Month Georgia. The
staple will not be so good; and if »n
early frost comes, good-bye North
Georgia crop.
—Droves of mules have appeared in
Columbus. Who is to buy them ?
—Tho transit of Venas occurs on Dec.
8th. People here needn’t look for it as it
will not bo visible in the United States.
It next occurs in 1882. In our notice
yesterday we wrote “next month” as the
time of the transit.
The drunkard’s week is made up of
Tbirstdays.
—Twenty-three more days, and then
comes Christmas.
—December, from the Latin decern, ten,
is so called because it was the tenth
month of the old Roman calendar, which
began its year in March.
•There are said to be more Jews in
London than in Palestine, and more in
this country than in London.
—The new fashioned hats for ladies
look like some heavy man had sat down
on and thrown it away as useless, and all
the old cats and kittens had been sleep
ing on it for a year. It’s the fashion, and,
of course, is perfectly “killing.”
—The election times are becoming so
important and exoiting that work is re
quired both day and night. At least this
is what is told when young husbands
leave their wives in the evening. Not a
word is muttered about the witching
sports of “auctiou, pitch and poker.”

We find this iu tho last Financial

After giving data as to time, etc., of
bonds, the paper adds these remarks :
“Total debt $020,800, annual interest
required, about $44,000. Bouds are "all

amounts as wauted. City holds some

The Maae Troupe.
The company drew an average and a
paying house—not such an one as highest
class of combination would draw. The
music was very good—the violin solo very
sweet, tho cornet brilliant, and the quar
tette of four brass pieces. Mrs. Maas is
a kandsomo, dashing blonde, and very
graceful. She seemed to be suffering
from hoarseness last evening. Her acting
is excellent. Several of her songs were
encored. -Mr. Maas proved himself one
of tho most amusing of comedians.
Though having his face blacked, he does
not at all assume the dialect of the negro,
but he says so many new and quaint
things • iu such a funny and irre-
sistuble way that be kept the au
dience in a delightful humor,
aud was recalled agaiu and again. He is
a master of the banjo. His new “Put Me
in My Little Bed” is the perfection of the
burlesque and enthused the house. As a
German ho was not so much of a success,
llis “Dionysius” in the last act was capital.
Mrs. Mans' rapid sketching of Butler and
Grant, the oue with tho traditional spoon,
and the other with the cigar and bull pup,
displayed skill aud readiness with the
pouoil.
The entertainment was highly enjoyed
aud all left well pleased.
A matinee for ladies and children will
be given at 2$ r. m. and another perform
ance to-night.

The true road to prosperity is to buy
only what you are able to pay the cash
for. Appreciating the faot, I have de
termined to sell from this date for the
cash. By adhering strictly to tnis rule,
will be able to sell oheaper than when
goods are to be “charged.” Parties in
debted to me will confer a great favor by
calling and settling promptly.

If Alcoholio Stimulants are taken into
the blood the heart works faster, and this
unnatural speed wears out the vital
machinery. All intoxicating nostrums
advertised as “tonic.*,” “renovators,” Ac.
produce this disastrous efleet, and should
be rejected. Da. Walker's Veoetable
Vinkotr Bitters—an Invigorant without
the curse of alcohol—is everywhere sup
planting these poisons. novl2 4w
Schenek’s Mandrake Fllle
Will be round to possess those qualities neats-
sary to tbe total eradication of all bilious
tacks, prompt to start the secretions of
liver, and give a heabhy tone to tho entire
system. Indeed, it is no ordinary discovery
medical science to have invented a remedy
these stubborn complaints, whioh develop
tbe results producod by a heretofore free
or calomel, a mineral justly dreaded by man
kind, and acknowledged to be destructive
the extreme to the human system. That
properties of certain vegetables comprise
the virtues or calomel without Ite injurious
tendencies, Is now an admitted ract, rendered
indisputable by sclentlflo researches; and
those who use the Mandrake Pills will be billy
satisfied that the best medicines are those pro
vided by nature In the common herbs and roots
or the fields.
Theso pills open the bowels and correct all
bilious derangements without salivation or
any or tbe injurious effects or ealomel or other
poisons. The secretion of bile is promoted by
these pills, as will be seen by the altered eolor
of the stools, and disappearing ol the sallow
complexion and cleansing of tho tongue.
Ample directions for use accompany each
box of pills.
Prepared only by J. H. Sehenck k Son, at
their principal office, corner Sixth and Areh
streets, Philadelphia, and for sale by all drug
gists and dealers. Price 26 cents per box.
