London, December 11.—The 7Vm<4, in
an editorial, says: Tha telegram, whioh
wa era enabled to publish, shows that at
Nagasaki, although tbe weather was un
favorable, tbe transit observations were
made in an admirable and exhaustive
manner, which tho American astronomers,
skilled in expeditionary work, know well
how to apply. We fear that observations
at Prof. Hall's station era useless, being
mads by tha Hallayan method; heaoe tha
careful determination indicated by the
American telegram becomes of enormous
Importance.
London, December 11.—Telegrams in

BILL OP PARTICULARS REQUIRED.
New York, Deo. 11.—In tha Beechar-
Tilton suit the Court decided to grant n

law imposes no impossibility and does not
require from the plaintiff the designation
of the precise day, at th* hasard of n
failure of joatioe, if he fail to provo tho
not upon the praoiae day named. It is
auflloient if he designate* th* day with
suoh reasonable approximation, ao that
th* defendant is fairly apprised of tha
charges in view.
The affidavit of tho plaintiff was read
on this motion.
It will be sufficient for him so state in
tbe bill of particulars to be furnished

alleged to have taken place on tha 10th
and 17th of October, 1864, wore commit
ted on and about three days at either one
or tho other of tho plaoea mentioned in
the affidavit, or as soon as suggested by
one of counsel for defendant, it mey be
regarded as anflloient to any that these
nets wars oommitted during tha month of

noquainta the defendant with the ohsrg*
he is to meet.

shows little change in volume, though
prioes her* have been somewhat affected.
Wheat is lower under rather unfavorable

with little inclination to bny. The faot

ELECTION OF OIBOUIT JODOB—A VIOLENT
BADICAL DErXATKD.
Chahlnston, December 11.—Tha elec
tion of a Judge of the Charleston Circuit
by the Btate Legislature, which took place
to-day, attracted much attention, because
the candidate* of prominence were Be-
pnbiioans, and one of them was an active
supporter of and tbe other wu opposed
by Gov. Chamberlain. Tbe Chamberlain
candidate waa J. P. Bead, a Carolinian
of aom* ability and distinction, who re
cently joined tbe Bepnblican party. The
anti-Chamberlain waa W. J. Whipper, a
notoriou black politician. In tbe caucus
last night Gov. Chamberlain demanded
that an able and honest man ba ohoson,
denounced Whipper as inoapable and
eorrnpt, and urgsd tbe election of Reed.
There wss mnoh confusion, aud Chamber-
lain was bitterly abused by Wbipper and
other Bepnblican leaders. This morning
tbs Whipper party wer# confident of
winning, but tbe Conservatives seeing the
Bepublieen administration attaeked,voted
in a body for Reed, wbo was elected on
the first ballot.
Alakasia Claims Court.
Washinoton, December 11.—In tbe
Alabama Claims Court, case 118, Gordon
va. United States, came np for discussion
to-day, on th* demurrer entered by Gen.
Cremwell, oounsel for the Government,
demurring to the petition on the ground
thst the said Gordon, at the time of
th* alleged loss, although serving on au
American vessel was a British eubjeot.
The case was argued ou tbe part of (be
claimant by Henry C. Bliss, of this city,
tad for tbe Government by Gen. Cross
well.
The argument developed th* faot that
the questions were the most important
that have yet arisen in this Court, and
introduced important law points con
nected with citizenship, naturalization and
ezpstriation. Tbs argument ooonpied the
entire dsy. A decision will probably be
rendered early next week.
An important case was set for a hearing
next Monday, being that of Whiting vs.
tha United States.
The nature of the case will oanse it to
b* intonating to every seamen captured
by th* Confederate cruisers. Whiting,
who waa an American sailor on board th*
Levi Starbuck, waa captured by the Ala
bama, and, aa alleged, remived such hard
ships on board that vessel, tbei be loet ibe
