NEW ORLEANS.
POOM LOUISIANA.
SHERIDAN IS OOIXO THERE.
Chicago, December 29.—Lieutenant-
General Sheridan, accompanied by Gen.
Buoker, Major Geo. A. Forsythe and Col.
M. Sheridan, of his staff, left here last
night for New Orleans.
Washington, December 29.—There
need be uo doubt about it. Gen. Sheri
dan has documents in his pocket attach
ing Louisiana to his department, whioh
he may promulgate at his discretion.
LAUNDRLKT WILLIAMS BAYS THE RETURNING
BOARD MUST BE SUSTAINED.
The Oabiuet to-day had Louisiana mat
ters under consideration. Atttorney-
General Williams expressed his views
npon the action of the Returning Board,
strongly asserting his opinion that it was
legal and corrsot in all its particulars, and
•aid it should be sustained by the Govern
ment at all hazards.
There was not muoh discussion upon
the subjeot. There was some conversa
tion upon the reVorto of probable viola
tions of the public peace upon the assem
bling of the Legislature on the fourth of
January, and the opinion was expressed
that the United States forees now sta
tioned at New Orleans are amply sutfi
dent to prevent any serious outbreak,
should any such occur.
WMF AND FOB WHAT SHERIDAN 28 GOING.
Ghioaoo, December 29.—There is high
official authority for saying that General
Sheridan does not go to New Orleans in
obedience to any direct orders, bnt in
compliance with the personal request of
the President, who desires to have some
one at that point in whom he has implicit
confidence, to furnish him with truthful
information, and of such rank that iu
ossa of an emergency, he oan act without
official orders from Washington.
General Sheridan was intending to go
to Ouba in a few weeks, and this trip
South is only anticipating time, for after
a short stay in New Orleans he will sail
for Cuba.
Hit immediate work in Louisiana is to
oonaarve the peaoe, and ha will not re
move any officer, or take any part in mili
tary affair*, unless it is absolutely neoee-
sary to accomplish that object.
COMMENTS AT THE CAPITOL ABOUT THE DIF
FICULTIES.
Washington, December 29.—The kill
ing of Byerly by ex-Governor Wsrmoth
occasions much comment to-day among
all eases, and fears are expressed that it
may lead to general disturbance, bnt gen
tlemen from New Orleans do not appre
hend such. While they admit the quar
rel between these parties inoresses the
prevalent uneasiness, there are no antici
pations of a contemplated organised
resistance to the decisions of the Re
turning Board. In fact the most
prominent Democrats in New Orleans
have counseled the contrary. There is
fear, however, that rash oonduot on the
part of a few might preoipitate a col
lision of arms among the many, and thua
lead to notive Federal interference. It is
known that the Executive Department is
closely watching the course of events iu
Louisians, uud has recently reoeived
much private information on the sub
jeot ; and further, that the President^has
earnestly expressed his determination
to preservo the peace. The legislature
meets on the fourth of January, when its
expeotod stern opposition will be made in
the House of Representatives to the rul
ings of the Returning Board, and to this
time prominent persons here are looking
with much solicitation ; there is no deter
mination as yet as to the superoeding of
Gen. Emory. To recall him now and
send another to take his place would, it is
said, appear as if the Executive were
preparing for a conflict which may
not toko place, and also increase the
present excitement, bnt there is some
oolor to the report that should it become
necessary Lieut. Gen. Sheridan would
proceed to New Orleans and assume
maud. If rumor is to be credited, he will
be iu proximity to New Orleans on the
day of the meeting of the Legislature.
While car3 will be taken to do nothing
whatever to inflame the public mind, the
Government will be prepared to aot in
such a manner as circumstances may seem
to require.

NOTICE.
Tk« ghastly record of deaths that
result Irom pulmonary affoctlons is frightful.
There Is no disease that Is so lnslduous In Its
attack as consumption. By the neglect of
“slight oolds" they soon become deep seated
and defy remedies whioh, If applied at the out
set, would have averted all danger. Dr.
Tutt’s Expectorant has proven Itself 2be
■moat valuable Lunar Balaam ever
discovered. A distinguished clergy*
man of New York pronouooes It the “great,
est blosslng of tbe nineteenth century,*' and
says 44 no family should be without It." „ It is
pleasant to the taste, and a single dose will
often remove the most obstinate cough. Offlce
