DAILY ENQUIRER.suy : COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1874.
“What station do yon oalt thia?"
uld t man aa he crawled oat of the de-
bri. Of e railroad a»aalio*. "Deeaata-
tio»,” replied the nitoane oondnetor.
—“Well, how did you get along ?" in-
paired a conntry landlord one rain,
Doming, of a gnoat whom he had put in
“top mom, under a lukj roof. “Oh,
swimmingly," waa the reply.
—A thief who abetracted a theuaand
dollar check from the gifts diaplayed at a
wadding, only to find that the old man',
balaooc in the bank waa font dollars and
fifty oents, tbinka there ia no obanee for
bonaat industry in thia country.
—A. cynic obaerved : “If there ia any
thing that will reconoile a man to marritd
life, it la the knowledge that ateala over
him like a dream aa he burata a button off
hia trowaera that there ia one at home
who ean repair the damage."
—Monkeys never grow older in exprea-
aion. A young monkey looke exactly like
bis grandpa melted up and born over
again.
—A boy once complained of hia broth
er for taking half of the bed. “And why
not,” said hia mother^ “he ia entitled to
half, ia he not?” “Yea, ina,”siid the
boy, “but how should you like to have him
to take all the soft for his halt? He
will have his half out of the middle, and
I have to aleep on both aides of him.”
—You can't tell muoli about the girls
nowadays, they are so like a good news
paper—capitally made up. To see a girl
as she really is, you must drop in on her
unexpectedly. As some one has remarked,
the way to lind a girl out is to call when
aha ian t in.
—A spread-eagle orator wanted the
wings of a bird to fly to every village and
hamlet in the broad land, but he wilted
when a naughty boy in the crowd sang
out: “You'd be shot for a goose before
you had died a mile.”
—When a Chicago woman answered
the door-bell and waa informed that her
hnabgnd bad been drowned, she sank
down and worshipped: “And the bill for
•GO worth of false hair is to come up at
fouro’olock—ooh—hooh!”—Detroit P rear.
—Doing his beat. Theodore Hook was
once asked for a contribution to the treas
ury of the Society for the Conversion of
the Jews. He said he waa quite unable
to give any money, but if the society
would send him a Jew he would do his
best to convert him.
—By the laws of Massachusetts, one
hog, among other articles, is exempted
from aeisure for debt; but a sharp credi
tor in Holyoke recently played a sharp
game to get possession of the fat hog of
a neighbor who was indebted to him in a
small sum. The creditor bought a two-
dollar pig, presented it to the debtor, and
then lawfully attached the hog, realizing
thirteen dollars by his sharp practice.
A Princely Swindler.
The Pali Mall Uaxette says: “A swin
dler of a really high order of ability has
lately brought a brilliant career to a dose
at Moaoow in the person of an ex-prince,
Demetrius Taihawtsohawadze, who has
been levying contributions at a dozen of
the ohief towns in Europe, London being
especially mentioned, with continued suu
cess. The Prince never changed his very
unpronounceable name or his store, after
the fashion of those more vulgar impos
tors who contradict themselves by the fre
quency and multiplicity of their
inventions. He wss always a Bus
sian prince, bad always been robbed
just before leaving Vienna by
young man he had unfortunately
taken into his servioe as secretary was
always expecting large remittances from
fib Petersburg, and was meanwhile in the
e/osest relations of intimaoy with the
Buasian Ambassador. It followed that
he was for the present unable to pay the
bill he ran up at the hotel whioh he had
honored wilh his choice, and was further
in want of a now secretary, to whom he
oould promise a line future career and a
large salary in immediate prospeot.
“So plausible was this adventurer, that
at Berlin he not only left one of the chief
hotels without suspicion before his remit
tanoea arrived, promising to send payment
of his acoount, wbioh included a number
of petty tradesmen's bills, from London,
but carried off with him to that metropo
lis his landlord's son, whose little
purse of nearly £60 his new
master borrowed freely from, leav.
ing hia victim just enough to go back to
Berlin with, when he was presently
dared there to await the Prinae on his
way to Buaaia. On the young man’s de
parture the Prinoe, who had been intro
duced to BuBsiana of means, borrowed
£800 from one, according to the state
manta made in the Moaoow court, and
with this booty went ofT to Paris.
Here, again, he borrowed from
Bussians on the strength of hiB
alleged intimaoy with their ambus
sador at Berlin, but disappeared
on learning that inqniriea were being
made about him, owing to a warning sent
from that oapital Having tried all the
European courts out of bis own country,he
appears to have sought refuge at Moscow
but hers hia carreer ended. He was ar
rested on suspicion, and presently identi
fled with one Linieff, a non-ooinminioned
officer, who deserted some months before.
For this desertion the soi-disant prince
now lies awaiting trial, but his swindling
ia only mentioned ineideutally.”
■Eastern Marring os.
The village where we are staying 1b in a
narrow and deep valley, ao that if we
were to die suddenly it would take a long
time to rise to heaven. We find wooder-
ful customs here. Girls, newly born, are
hastily engaged to boys not a year old.
In every house there are several engaged
girls, and alto several engaged boys, so
that if we should wish to engage our
Zanops (about four years old) perhaps we
oould not find a girl, but it would be nec-
esaary to wait until a new one was born;
then if we heard quiokly of her birth we
might eeoure her, otherwise there would
be no hope. These past days several
obildren were married who could not tie
theirgirdlea, they were so small.
In my school some of the boys and
girls are married and some are engaged.
The girls are sold, aa oows or other ani
mals, for from B7G to $176. That is, two
mules oould be bought with the price of
one girl. (Widows are worth more than
girls, beoause already trained to work.)
Brides are not permitted to speak to
oertain of their husband's relatives for
