Washington, Nov. 15.—Lieut.
Wood, Assistant Adjutant-General to
Gen. (). O. Howard, is in this city.
At tlie time of the surrender of Chief
Joseph to Gen. Miles, Lieut. Wood
made a report of the speech delivered
by the chief, which was as follows:
Tell Gen. Howard I know his
heart. What lie told me before I
have it in my heart. I am tired of
fighting. Our chiefs are killed.
Looking Glass is dead. Tlie-old men

who say yes or no. He who led on
the young men is dead. It is cold
and wet; we have no blankets. The
little children are freezing to death.
My people, some of them, linve run
away to tlie hills and linve no blan
kets, no food. No one knows where
they are—perhaps freezing to death.
I want to have tihie to look for my
children and see how many of them
I can find. May be I shall And them

and sad. From where the sun now
stands I will fight no more forever.’

Bishop Heber, for a Bow Meeting, near
Nt. Asaph, seventy years ago. Besides
the interest attaching to this rollicking
lyric in connection with the revival of
archery in this country, it is also, by
way of contrast, very’ notable as the
production of the author of •‘From

known missionary hymn.

Scarlet Fever In Brooklyn.
Owing to tlie alarming spread of
scarlet fever and diptlieria in Brook
lyn tlie Board of Healtli lias been
recently manifesting a concern which
tlie serious condition of affairs de
mand on their part. Between Jan
uary 1st and October 1st, 1877, the
number of eases of diptlieria reported
at the Sanitary Bureau of that city
was 1,605, of which 581 have proved
fatal. There were 2,209 cases of scar
let fever during the same Interval, of
which latter disease 588 children died
The Board lias, within the pnst few
days, issued a circular which will be
sent to each house in that city requir
ing that a list of persons sick with
either of tlie obove contagious dis
eases shall lie sent daily to the princi
pals of tlie public schools, through
the Sanitary Superintendent.
Tlie latter is to notify
families of those who are
that during tlie period of liability
tlie spread of these diseases no child
in the house where such disease is
sliull be allowed to attend any school.
Whenever a child is taken sick with
diptlieria or scarlet fever the patient
must be kept from school from the
commencement of tlie disease until
all possible danger of communicating
it to others sliull have passed. The
Board cautions people that there is
danger ill scarlet fever so long as there
is any roughness or peeling off of tlie
skin, and in diptlieria until tlie phy
sician states tlie patient to be free
from tlie disease. After eucli case of
either disease the room occupied and
the clothes and bedding used by the
child are required to be fumigated
before they can be again used. Every
effort will be made by tlie sanitary
authorities to enforce these excellent
precautionary regulations for guard
ing against tlie spread of these fatal
maladies in Brooklyn. Tlie number
of deaths last week from diphtheria
was nineteen, and from scarlet fever
seventeen.

A Chinaman at an Auction.—
This morning, at an auction sale on
C. street, a lot of worn-out household
furniture was under tlie hammer,
when a Chinaman who had been care
fully watching operations for some
time, put in a bid of "two bittee” for
an old, dilapidated wash-stand. “Two
hits, do I hear the three?” shouted
the auctioneer. There wus a long
pause, broken at last by tlie China
man bidding again : “Three bittee.”
Tlie crowd laughed at tlie Celestial
for raising his own bid, and the auc
tioneer, taking in the situation, spng
out: “Three bittee, do i hear the
four?” and looked over at John.
There was another long pause, but at
lust “Fo bittee” came from the Chi
naman, and a roar of laughter went
up, in which even a number of old
women joined so heartily as to almost
shake their false teetli out. Still the
auctioneer held on to the withstand,
and tlie Cliinumuii, determined to
secure it, bid five, six, seven, eight
“bittee” successively, and it wus
finally passed over to him for a dollar
He received it with a smile of awful
dimensions,remarking: “Me kotcliee
