Craig, of Augusta, is dead. —The Atlanta Constitution flies a big rooster. —Bibb countv gave 2,813 majority for Milledgeville. —Chatham voted for Milledgville by 1,600 majority. —Col. It. A. Alston was elected to the Legislature from DeKalb county. There were four bridal couples at the Brown House, Macon, Thursday night. Some Meriwether land sold at sheriff’s sale last Tuesday for one dol lar per acre. —There are seventeen candidates for Clerk of the Superior Court of Spalding county. —Z. D. Lunchford, in southern part of Marion county, lost a daughter and son Sunday night. —On Wednesday, near Bell’s mill, in Marion county, a negro stabbed another, probably fatally. —Thursday W. J. Thornton, of At lanta, and Miss Ida Felder, and A. L. Reese and Miss Lula Walker were married in Americus. —Col. John 8. Grant, one of Meri wether’s best and most substantial citizens died at his residence, near Greenville, last Monday. —Nine itenerant and sixteen loeul preachers were ordained deacons by Bishop Pierce on Sunday lust, and ten itinerant and eight local preach ers were ordained elders on the same occasion. —The Jonesboro News snvs that Mrs. Elizabeth Whatley, of Fayette county, is 104 years of age, reads without glasses and walks visiting a quarter of a mile and returns the same day. —Mr. Malcolm Johnston lias with drawn from the Constitution's service as agricultural editor in order to give the whole of his time to the interests of tile State Agricultural Society, which lie hus so long and so well served. —Ex-Governor Bullock has appear ed in Atlanta for trial. His case will be culled Tuesday. The case is for “cheating and swindling.” Bullock says he lias come to Georgia to live and will make a statement at the proper time. —Montgomery county voted thus: For ratification 895, against mtiiica- tion 608, homestead of 1877 821, home stead of 1868 728, Atlanta 1,381), Mil ledgeville 214, I) all call 819, Mobley 525, F. J. Williams 1,101, C. W. Wil liams 847, scattering 89. —The corner-stone of tiie new chapel of the Southern Female Col lege will be laid next Tuesday, De cember 11, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. Hon. James M. Mobley, Grand Master of the State, will conduct the ceremonies. —Willis Polidere, a negro living in the Rutland district of Macon, had a difficulty with Mr. Lewis Grace in reference to a bale of cotton, on Sat urday, which resulted in the shooting of the latter by the former with a shot-gun, inflicting wounds in the head, face and shoulders. Polidere was subsequently arrested. —Augusta News: On Saturday last one of the largest cotton sales of the season was effected. The enterpris ing firm of Phinizy & Co., eoniposed of Stewart Phinizy and James Tobin, sold 1,100 bales of cotton to a single cotton buyer, Mr. Zlzinin. The price is not known authoritatively, but it is rumored that the lot brought 10} cents. —The City Council of Atlanta at its final meeting held Monday night passed an ordinance abolishing the registration on the ground that as the registration was conducted it was illegal and void, the books not having been opened at the time required by the ordinance establishing it. The result of this action was to open the polls to every one otherwise ([uulifled to vote at the municipal election. —The vote of Atlanta is : For ratifi cation, 2,574; against ratification,.2,- 934 ; for homestead of 1808, 2,339 ; for homestead of 1877, 2,279; Atlanta, 4,823 ; Milledgeville, 41 ; Howell. 3,- 666; Winn, 954 ; Mynatt, 2,067 ; Hill- yer, 2,055; Hammond, 2,214; Hul sey, 2,004; Fry, 1,683 ; Thomas, 777 Reed. 348; Garllngton, 373; McGill 292; Speairs, 217 ; Bell, 223 ;' Cooper 95 ; Crawley, 16 ; scattering, 7. —The Douglasville Medium says that on the 29tli of November (last Thursday) a very sad accident occur red at Villa Rica. While Mr. J. K P. McCarley was at work with two young men, Messrs. Chambers, in the S old mine, the embankment caved in llling both the Chambers instantly. Mr. McCarley escaped without any serious damage, owing, perhaps, to the prompt assistance rendered him by his father. He was covered com pletely up with the dirt and was dug ont by his fattier before lie iiml suffo cated. —In Marion county last Tuesday the executor of J. M. Harvey’s estate effected the following sales: Four hundred acres of land adjoining Buena Vista at $6 per acre, 100 acres at $5.75 per acre, undivided one-half interest in the Melienney tract at $13.05 per acre, undivided one-half interest in u store house and lot at $150, undivided one-half interest in dwelling house and lot in Buena Vista at $400, five acre lot and dwell ing at $600. The lands of the Burk- halter estate brought from 50 cents to $1.50. Unimproved town lots sold at from $10 to $30; improved town lots from $25 to $116. Ml'. T. L. Rogers bought the dwelling and lot at $099. —Following were sold at Savannah Tuesday: $8,000 Western Railroad of Alabama second mortgage, endorsed by Central Railroad and Georgia Railroad Company, eight per cent, bonds, at 99}; $2,0fX) Mobile <fc Girard Railroad second mortgage bonds at 98}; $9,000 Barbour county of Ala bama bonds at 16}; 71 shares South western Railroad" stock, each at 78; 90 shares Atlantic and Gulf Railroad guaranteed stock each at 50c; The same Arm also made the following sales at the same time: The Wake field plantation, for estate of W. Fulton, sold for $715; Junction Branch Atlantic and Gulf Railroad bonds, $81 50; Coast Line Railroad second mortgage bond, $40; South western Railroad stock, ex-dividend /T^sfoesville Gazette: The Sheriff of this county, Hon. William Barrett, has received four fl fas. from Attor ney General Ely, against the Upson «y railroad for taxes for 1874 '0- 78 and 1877. To each fl fa. is penalty of $1,875. The Sheriff furnished the Cen tral Railroad Company through their moal agents at this point. Mr. C. W. ™>wn sent a copy of the papers seve- i»laay«siu cc . on Monday morning the- Sheriff called to know what resiionse the company had made, and found that Mr. Brown had nothing in reply from tiie company. Mr. Brown telegraphed tiie company, asking the sheriff to await a hearing. The At torney-General instructed the sheriff to receive the $2,500, the amount of the tax, tiie Attorney General’s fees, tiie sheriff’s fees and’costs if the com pany would settle the fl fas. If they do not settle and contest tiie matter the penalties amounting to $7,600, added to the tax and fees will amount to more than ten thousand dollars. Tiie papers in the case arc returnable to flic Clerk of Fulton Superior Court. In reply the company stated they ould not interfere witli the sheriff nnd he advertises the road in this issue. ALABAMA NEWS. Tuskegee is to have a town clock. ■Montgomery Council nnd the gas company are not peaceful. —Montgomery Council has licensed cock pits—$100 for each exhibition. —The December term of tiie Su preme Court commenced last Tues day. —Rev. E. A'. Van Hoose, of Troy, lias accepted a call to tiie Baptist church at Auburn. —Mr. Jacob Snntaplier, an old resi dent, died of pneumonia in Kufaula ou tlie 3d Inst., aged 63 years. Gen. E. Y. Fair lias been appoint ed Foreman of tiie United States GraTid Jury, in place of tiie late Robert Tyler. —A week or two since Messrs. Graves & Gary, of Kufaula had a bar rel of candy stolen from them which they had neglected to take indoors on losing up at night. It was recovered. —Troy elected, on Tuesday, for the ensuing year: DeKalb Williums, Mayor; t. H. Bowles, Clerk ; S. W. Stewart, Marshal; John H. Jones, J. A. Raleigh, W. W. Jones, J. I*. Mor ris. -Thursday, at Montgomery, Mr. M. L. Gilmer, while uncoupling two freight cars at tiie Montgomery and Eufaula Railroad depot, was drawn under tiie car and had his thigh broken. —The U. 8. District Court eon- ened Tuesday, nnd continued a num ber of cases, being unable to proceed witli the criminal docket, Mr. Mayor or his representative not arriving tiie night before, ns was expected. —The farmers of North Alabama And great difficulty in procuring hands for field work, in consequence of which half thccotton crop remains in the field, and will necessitate a good deal of financial embarrassment. At the McGehee land sale, at Eu- faulu, last Saturday, 1,148 acres of land were sold for linlf cash and tiie balance on twelve months' credit, with interest from date, and two good securities. It was sold in three par cels. Tiie first, of 382 acres, was bought at $2 80 per acre; the second, of 352 acres, by Col. D. M.
