DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS. GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 12, 1877. GEORGIA NEWS. —Mrs. Eliza Moore, of Augusta, is dead. —Mr. Chas. Smith t$n old citizen of Talbot county Is dead. —Hamp Glddlns, of Talbot, has l*en found to be a lunatic. —A calf was found In a kettle of boiling syrup In Talbot county. —Lieutenant Colonel W. H. Ross, of the Second Georgia Battalion, has resigned. —John Harshaw, colored, charged with firing the Atlanta barracks Tias been acquitted. —George Matthews, colored, bored his way out of the Talbotton jail 'Thursday night. —Col. C. C. Jones, Jr., of Augusta, writing a history of the “Bead Towns In Georgia.” —A number of churches in Talbot circuit have given Rev. \V. W. Stew art a 163 suit of clothes. —Mr. Wm. Ison, on Monday night near Talbotton, was knocked down by a negro and robbed of $4.75. —The majority of the City Council of Augusta are in favor of transfer ring the police force to the commis sioners. —One ballot in Perry on Wednes day read: “For the capital—Gum Swamp or Stone Mountain; I don’t care a d—n which.” —The residence of Mr. Job A. Bill son, in Talbotton, was robbed of $120 in money while he and his wife were paying a visit one evening. —The Green Matthews place, in Pittsburg district, Talbot county, was sold for $2,000, at public outcry, Dr, W. P. Matthews being the purchaser. —On Tuesday two lots of land were sold in Washington county—one of 700 acres, averaging $3 per acre, and one of 580 acres,' averaging $4 per acre. —Three families, the advance of thirty from Baltimore, to settle on the St. Johns river, to engage in the lumber business, have reached Sa vannah. —Some of the papers arc calling on Atlanta to build the capital. The men who, for that consideration, voted for Atlanta must learn “to be patient and to wait,” and do both well. —Houston, Franklin county, had a fire last week, In which the Masonic Lodge was consumed, together with a store and woodshop. Cause sup posed to be rata using friction match es. —Mr. Paul Bleckley, the eldest son of Judge Bleckley, of the Supreme Court, has left Atlunta for Baltimore, where he will.go upon the stage, un der the patronage of Mr. Johu Ford. His father approves. —A colored boy, an assistant ferry man, while crossing the river was murdered by a white man, Taylor, aged eighteen to twenty yearn, who was in the boat. He has been arrest ed and is In jail at Huwkinsvllle. —A man from one of the up coun ties has been arrested in Atlunta charged with bigamy, and perhaps trigamy, and the lawyers are fighting over $175 which he lias, and his last wife and several other parties claim. —Bainbridge Democrat: Cupid Houston, who was tried and found guilty of murder before Judge Wright last week, fainted when the Judge pronounced the sentence of “ninety- nine years or his naturul life” in the penitentiary. -The Republican party of Bruns- icl i sues his proclamation declaring that it has been adopted. The Con stitution kills the old Legislature,and os the new Legislature will not meet and organize until November there is no President of the Henate or .Speak er of the House to take the pluee of the Governor in the event of his deuth or resignation, nor is there any person authorized, in such a contin gency, to call tiie General Assembly together in special session. ALABAMA NEWS. —Gale county has sown more oats than were ever known. The Coosa Hall Hotel in We- tumpka sold last week for $1,900. —The Republicans of Mobile have nominated Paul Ra^iesles for Mayor. —The U. S. Grand Jury made 151 presentments to the court at Mont gomery. —Mr. DeBardelaben Is having ten new beams made for the woolen mill at Prattville. —Land near Eutaw brought $4.07 per acre lost week, and 40 acres near er town $25 an acre. —The Montgomery Advertiser of Sunday took 48hours to reach Colum bus. Distance 95 miles. —Mrs. ex-Gov. A. B. Moore died at the insane hospital last week. The remains were taken to Marion for in terment. —Jasper has a mad dog which is going for hogs and whipping all the canine in the county. He cleaned out a pack of hounds the other day. —The new grist mill and cotton gin of Mr. Rixie, on the Caliaba road, near Selma, were destroyed by fire last Friday night, with several bales of cotton. —On Friday last Col. B. J. Bald win and his son, of Verbena, killed the champion deer of Chilton county. It weighed 173 pounds net; with the horns, J85 pounds. —On the 4th instant,’at the resi dence of the parents of the bride, in Macon country, by the Rev. Mr. Norton, Mr. William Owen, of Bul lock county, to Miss Ida Borum were married. —At the city election last Tuesday week in Greenville J. F. Thomas was elected Mayor, W. P. Payne, Mar shal, and H. H. Reid, Louis Harrell, D. G. Dunklin, J. T. Perry and J. A. Harris, Councilmen. —The Medical Association of Bar bour, county' met at Eufaula on last Tuesday. Tlieir session was doubtless profitable to the profession, and was certainly harmonious. Dr. Baker was re-elected President, Dr. Winn Vice President, and Dr. Copeland Secretary and Treasurer, —Mrs. Drawhorn, living on the Shackelford place, near Demopolis, has picked over 4,000 pounds of seed cotton tills season. She is over 70 years of age. The old lady said that she didn’t want the darkies to get everything, so she went to picking cotton at 50 cents per hundred and lias made more than $20 at it. All honor to her. —A deputy policeman, Mr. De- Loach, of Alexander City, was badly cut witli a knife, by a negro. The wound was a gash from just above the ear, running down, splitting the ear and cheek in two, in a fearful manner. Several shots were fired at tiie negro as he ran oil, but without effect. Tne election took place Saturday. —The following is the official vote of Talbot county: For Ratification, 622; No Ratification, 49; Homestead of 1877, 468; Homestead 1808, 160; Mil- ledgeville, 513; Atlanta, 163; For Senator, Drake, 589; Representatives, MattheWB, 567; Maund, 561. —Talbotton board of education au dited the salaries of teachers to the amount of $3,900. The school fund for the coming year is $1,400 and the $500 remain over will give $1,900 for school purposes which will pay 50 per cent, of the teachers salaries au dited. —Hon. A. H. Stephens suggests that it would be eminently proper for Governor Colquitt, under the joint resolution of Congress concerning the Paris exposition of 1878 to appoint Gen. Robert Toombs as one ot the honorary commissioners to attend the exposition on behalf of Georgia —The cotton of Morgan county is being carried to Atlanta and Eaton- ton on wagons, and thenco shipped to the North, thus injuring Augusta and the Georgia Railroad. There are now In the State, according to tux receivers’ reports, 318,323. This shows a decrease from 1860 to 1870 of 88,153,and from 1870tol875 of 100,142. This makes 193,295 or 38 per cent, in fifteen years. There are 99,415 dogs in Georgia, und between April 1, 1874, and April 1, 1875, they destroyed 28,525 sheep. The profit of 63 per eent. mentioned above was realized hi spite of these ravages, which amount annually to 9 j>cr cent, of all the sheep In the'State.. One hundred sheep, regularly folded, will manure eight acres of land so us to double the eropmade thereon. —A legal writer in the Macon Tcl- e'jrajih and Mexxenr/cr makes the Point If Governor Colquitt dies be- tWeen this time und next November there will be no legal Government in Ueorgia, and a stale of uiiarchy will ensue. Henry Lett died in a few moments. The peri>etrator of this deed was a man named Zach H. Kimbrough, who has left for parts unknown. A reward for his appre hension is offered. —The Rev. Mr. Gillis.in his thanks giving lecture, stated that in a mem- jership of nearly one thousand on the Ozark circuit, but three deaths bad occurred during the current year, and of these two were over the age of seventy-five years. He further stated that every dollar of each of the sev eral assessments made upon the sev eral churches in ids circuit had been promptly and fully met. A countryman from Lee county in Mongomery hunting hands, was f ;one through with by Charles Wes- ey and another negro who carried him to a private place where they, pretending to be policemen, arrested him and took his money. The rob bers were afterward arrested and sen tenced to one hundred dayB’ work on the streets and gave bonds to answer the eliarge before the State courts. —On Friday night last a man got on the south bound train of the South & North Railroad. Having no mono; to pay Ills passage he was put off. got oh again He and was again put off. At Oxmoor he tried to get on while the train was in motion and fell upon the track. The whole train ran over him and he was horribly mangled his body being cut in two. He stated lie did not intend to follow tiie example of State Judges in imposing heavy penalties for illegal voting, etc. He read up- rovingly an extract from r jtter from Judge H. D. Clay ton, which had' been addressed to him by that gentleman in M Hodby’s behalf, and expressed him self as well pleased witli all that wi therein stated, although lie did not feci at liberty to make public tin* whole of it.
