GEORGIA NEWS. Wesleyan Female College at Ma- ' Tuesday night gave u splendid Inhibition. Tobn Brooks is trying to gather iftiie china berries in Quitman to L e as manure. Georgia railroad paid one ,„ in dred and twenty thousand dollars or steel rails last year. \tlanta will celebrate the Twelfth yield January Oth, by the usual ad vertising wagon procession. duly nine Senators; and less than ft v ofthe old members of the House have been returned to their seats. _The Griffin News says, that with Howard Williams as manager, H. W. Urady is about to start a lecturing tuur. —About 150 persons—men, women am l children—from Georgia and South Carolina, left Atlanta Tuesday for Texas. —Hudson, the Democratic nominee for Clerk ofthe Superior Court in Spalding county,' is elected over Mitchell, Independent, by over 250 majority. —Marshal Fitzsimmons has not ve t made his appointments. Fitness will govern. He means to execute the laws, and thinks he will have no trouble In doing so. —C'apt. Ed. Purcell, the hero of Oconee, and one of the most popular Georgia railroad conductors, is to he appointed a deputy United States Marshal under Marshal Fitzsimmons. —In Houston Superior Court last week Joe Humphries, who was charged with murder, whipping his : COLUMBUS, tfEbftfllA. THURSDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 20, 1877 child to death, plead guilty to volun tary manslaughter, and was sen tenced to five years in tire peniten tiary. —The Ln Grange Reporter has a ringing editorial in defence of Gen. Gordon, against the insidious attack of the Constitution'll anonymous cor respondent. The Atlanta crowd, who composes it are well known, might as well be informed they cannot defeat Gen. Gordon. —The suits of W. A. Hufl’and of Coleman and Newsom, against J. W. Lathrop & Co., of Savannah, were Tuesday decided in the Supreme Court of Chatham county, by a ver dict for the plaintiffs. This is a case arising from some transactions in meats several years since. —Governor Colquitt pardoned Vnn- nious Jennings, colored, who was sentenced to the penitentiary at the July term of Oconee Superior Court, 187(i, for the offense of burglary in tlie day. His sentence was for three years, hut on the certificate of a phy sician that lie would die if longer confined, the Governor humanely pardoned him. —A crazy man named John Seals placed a cigar box so charged with powder and shot that it would be dis charged on being bundled, on the ve randah of Mr. J. Rhodes Hill, in At lanta, on Monday night and then told him of it. The machine was render ed harmless by being dipped in water. Mr. Hill hod the man arrested and declined to prosecute. —One of the most remarkable re sults of the recent election is tlie ig noring of the family of Smiths. Only three of that name, namely: Smith of Hulls, Smith of Walton, Smith of Oglethorpe, were elected to tlie Leg islature. The family of Jones too has been neglected. We believe hut one of the Jones, Dr. J. 8., of Mc Duffie county, will answer to tlie roll call in tlie.next House. —It lias been decided at the Atlanta Fair of tlie Young Men’s Library As sociation that Conductor Johnston, of tlie Georgia Railroad, is tlie most popular railroad conductor voted for at that fair. He received a majority of four hundred and seventy-eight votes and won the splendid gold watch. Tlie sum realized oil that watch by the association was nine hundred and fifty-six dollars net. The question arises how much did Johnson pay. —Atlanta, now that the capital question is settled, has amoral spasm, and all tlie keepers and owners of houses of 111 fame.in that city have been indicted. We believe Atlanta lias been afflicted in this way several times before, but lier efforts in tin- cause of morality must have been of little avail, or the labors of the pres ent grand jury would not be so ardu ous. Tlie soiled doves will lie de spoiled of some of their plumage, some of the poorest may be sent to jail, and then the stern virture of Atlanta will lie satisfied. This is scarcely the way in which to im prove morals. —Tlie so-called “Railway and Steamship Association of the South” met at Augusta. All the magnates were present. Tlie convention was called to order by Governor Brown, the president. The object of the meeting was to make some changes looking to a more equitable position of the competitive business between the different lines and a more equita ble adjustment for lines currying an excess of business. These objects, after a most harmonious session, were accomplished, and at one o’clock Hie convention adjourned. In other words, they made arrangements to equalize competitive towns and crush those that are in their mercy. —At tlie sale of tlie real estate of G. W. Adair in Atlanta, the express office, the original cost of which was $41,000, was offered and secured a lirst hid of $10,000. It ran to $24,030, and was knocked down to M. C. & J. F. Kiser. Tlie ticket office ad joining sold for $5,510, and was pur chased by ex-Govcrnor Brown. The Grenville mill, on Forsyth street, sold to Mr. Patillo for $1,075. A third interest in the Kimball House, free from all encumbrance except a mortgage of $0,000 held by Dr. Jos. Thompson, was bough! liy him for $45,000. Tile building cost $000,000, Twenty-one M. C. Kimball bond of $1,000 each, secured by mortgage on Kimball House, brought 05c, by W. H. Smyth, at making the Kim ball third the same as that of Adair. Ninetv shares Street Railroad stock brought 09 to 100; G. W. Adair's residence to E. A. Warner, $5,000 Kimball House furniture to Joe Thompson, $3,200—total sale $101,' 925. —Tlie trustees of the Lunatic Asv lum were in session several days lust week. The hoard consists of Col. I. N. Whittle, of Bibb, (appointed tc fill the place of Dr. Jus. F. Bozemaifc. deceased,) Col. J. S. Pinckard of For syth, Col. R. L. Mott, of Muscogee Capt. T. F. Newell and Gen. S. 1 Myrick, of Baldwin. Col. Whittle was made chairman of tlie Hoard All the old officers of the institution were re-elected as follows: Sujieriii teudent—Dr. T. F. Green; First As sistant Physician—Dr. T. O. Powell Second Assistant Physician—Dr. T H. Kenan; Steward—John Ham niond; Assistant Steward -John A Orme; Treasurer—B. R. Herty Apothecary—W. A. Getting. There are about 690 patients, which is larger number than was ever in the Asylum before at one time, and the cost per capita lias been only 36.1 cents ja-r day—which is the lowest point to which it has ever been brought. This includes all expenses of every kind, and it certainly speaks well 'for the management of the Institution. ALABAMA NEWS. -Mr. Frank Pullum, of Union Springs, is dead. —The Montgomery Evening Star lias twinkled out. —Gov. Sam Bard ceases connection with the Pensacola Herald. —The jury in the ease of the Troy bonds, on trial in the United States Court, disagreed. —Dr. Edmunds Mason died in We- tumpka Tuesday evening, after a short illness of only four or five days. —The loss at tlie fire or Sharp’s mills, on Saturday morning last, is estimated at ,$1,100, tlie losses being confined to Mr. Sharp and Mr. Davis. —Tlie jury at Montgomery in the case of the United States vs. Logan Delmar (colored), charged with em bezzlement in tlie postofflee, brought in a verdict of guilty, and recommend ed him to the mercy of the court, on account of his good character previous to this trouble. II W»n’l Tlie Tooblache. In the ladies waiting-room of tlie Central Depot tlie oilier day were a newly-married couple from Grass Lake. They had been visiting in tlie city two or three days, and were then ready to go home. They sat side by side, of course, ids arm around her waist and she leaning on his should er. A long-waisted stranger from tlie East, having sore eyes ami a big heart, walked in, saw them thus seat ed, and in about a minute lie asked of the husband: “Has that woman there got tlie toothache?” Tlie husband looked up ill surprise, but made no answer. After two or three minutes the long-waisted man again remarked: "If that woman has got tlie tooth ache I’ve got a bottle of peppermint in my satchel here.” The bride rolled her big white eyes around, and the husband looked somewhat embarrassed. Tlie man from down East unlocked ills satchel, fumbled among his shirts and collars, and brought up fouroun'ces of pepper mint essence. Heuncorked it, touch ed the contents ofthe bottle against Ids big red tongue, and, handing it for ward toward the husband, feelingly said: "Just have her sop some on a rag and rub her gooms with it. We've used it in our family for—.’’ The bride's eyes threw out sparks as she lifted her head from its loving position, and, striking at tlie bottle, she smirled out: “TutRache, you fule! If you don’t know the difference ’tween' true love and the tuthache you’d better pick grass with tlie geese!” "My Lord!’’gasped the man; and lie hurried out, with his satchel in one iiand and the bottle in the other.— Detroit Free Press.
