After reflection, however, the chal lenge was withdrawn and uu old- fashioned fisticuff was adopted. One of the ears of one had been chewed almost to mince-meat, and the other’s face hung out signals of distress, —The following is the verdict of the jury in the case of the post mor tem examination of Col. T. T. Bo rough, who was found killed on the Northeastern Rnilroad on the 3d of November last, near Harmony Grove, in JackHon county. The body was exhumed by the coroner on the. 14th instant, and after an investigation the following verdict was rendered: “We, the jury, utter a post mortem examination of the body of T. T. Do- rough, deceased, by Dr. L. G. Harde man find that lie, the deceased, came to ids death on the night of the 3d of November last by being intoxicated and lying on the track of the North eastern Railroad one and a half miles above Harmony Grove, in Jackson county, when the down train, about ten o'clock at night, ran over him and cut his head from his body, with many other bruises, and caused ills immediate, dentil. This December 14th, 1877.” ALABAMA NEWS. —Mr. John Sherer, of Dallas coun ty, is 94 years old. —Not long since Hon. II. A. Woolf had at dinner in Deniopolis, several Woolfs, Foxes and a Crane. A Lyon had also been there not long before. —A party of gentlemen of Demop- olis, with two of their friends from Belma, had a very successful hunt last week at Shady Grove. They killed 14 deer, 14 turkeys, 22 ducks and some smaller game. —Mr. Wiley Moody, of Walnut Grove, brought to Prattville, last Fri day and solo the first bnle of cotton he ever raised. Mr. Moody Is (id years old and can say what a great many mueh younger men cannot—that lie never gave a mortgage for that which he could raise himself to grow cotton. Although this was his first bale of cotton, lie has always had corn and meat and other farm products to sell and has thus far managed to raise a large family without giving mortga ges. If every farmer would do so the cry of hard times would ceuse. A Jobe Tbol lUurd Fire. Cooley’s oldest boy is a 'little too fond of playing practical jokes. The other evening he went up into the third story back room, in which the hired man sleeps, and fixing a g iece of stout twine to the bed clothes, e ran it down stairs into ids own room, with the.intent to remove the covers from the hired man us soon as that indivdual got into bed. The Cooleys had just taken down their winter stoves and they had the par lor stove standing temporarily at the head of tjie third story stuirs. The man discovered the string just as he was retiring and comprehend ing the motive of the intended trick he quietly untied it and fastened it to the stove. , , , . , The hoy meantime had gone to bed and forgotten about the string. But about ten o’clok Mr. Cooley, Who was up stairs getting apples in the garret, caught ills foot in the string as lie Vos coming down the steps. ,, He fell, and pulled the stove aftei him. and the next moment, C oolcy, a pan of apples and about forty pieces of stove, stove pipe, grates and brick lining were rattling down the stairs witli a noise likea volley ot musketry.
